    My mom raised chickens and ducks before. And yes they can live together, if you raised them together when their very young. Here's a side note we once caught a young baby woodpecker, and we raised him with the chickens, and they became very good friends. True story.

      Linda Hilger diatomaceous earth white food grade. Works well. Also putting apple cider vinegar in their water.

    Fun Fact: Ducks have the most nutrition in their eggs, followed by geese") French chefs only use duck eggs in their pastries for that reason and also they have a better consistency :) Also, Baked goods have a richer flavor and texture, a golden color and stay moist longer when made with duck eggs. Also because of the protein baked goods made with duck eggs are fluffier and hold their shape better, making them excellent for gluten free baking.

    My Mama had 4 ducks when we lived on our small homestead back in the 70's 80's. She called them SILLY WILLY BILLY & DILLY. Loved their antics and their eggs. I plan to get ducks for the homestead and once again you make me so happy to plan my homestead. Almost ready to build. I like your idea of having them stay in the garden.

    We have kept chickens,ducks, and turkeys together for years. It doesn't present a problem. Even geese will live together.

      Yes, that is fine if you have a lot of space. For someone keeping just a small flock in a small pen or coop then mixing ducks and chickens will be a disaster as the ducks will mess the place up, eat all the chicken feed, and bully the chickens. Free range is 100 percent fine to mix them, and also if the pen is really big.

      I’m sure it all depends on the coop too, I had a pretty big coop with areas that the chickens could stay out of the ducks’ space. I also wouldn’t feed them in their coop or give them water in their coops (ducks are too messy for that).

      I mean if you raise chickens and ducklings at young age they will live together peacefully. But when you put a duck and a chicken in a cage when they grew up then it can be problematic

    Chickens and ducks can live together but there are a couple oddities.
    First, if there's water or even mud puddles around, for much of the day, the ducks will be there and the chickens won't.
    Secondly, if you have male ducks without duck females, together with chicken hens, all together, even if roosters are present, the male ducks will, um ... out compete, or maybe out harass, the hens in failed attempts to mate. The ducks, despite short legs, can run fast and are persistent. The almost unending male duck harassment can become annoying to both hens AND people.
    Enough already. They have different body shapes and leg lengths - physically, it doesnt work well. But that doesnt stop them trying - almost - all- day- long. Uggg.
    In this context, it might be more peaceful to just separate them.

    Remind me of the relationship between chicken, duck and donkey in my maternal grandparent's home, the chicken and duck share same food tray, so as you said, when duck was in the yard, the only thing chicken can do is stand by and watch the duck eating. Actually this is not problem, because most of daytime they don't stay in the yard, the food tray is not their main food source, especially in summer, they back for water or egg laying (chicken do this daytime, duck do this night time). We live on a small hill, the nearest neighbor is 100yrd away, we have corn field, vegetable field, peach field, tree field and small gardens around our house. Chickens and ducks have different preferred path and area around the house. They will back to the yard at sunset, then will be kept in different house night time. Usually sunset is also the time when the donkey back to the yard after a long or heavy haul, it gonna have some free time to walk around the yard, then ducks and chickens will stand side by side, watch the donkey eat all of their food. lol Subscribed because your video remind me of my childhood. Ducks not only bully chickens, some time even dare to steal dog's food. lol

    Pekin ducks are very good eating because of their size especially if you finish them on corn they get a thick layer of yellow fat under the skin which if you render it off and save it is the best thing for frying potatoes in

    We have Silver Appleyard ducks and a variety of chickens in the same small paddock, and they ignore each other. The ducks don't bully the chickens or vice versa. The chickens go into a coop at night. The ducks stay outside. There aren't many predators in NZ, but we may have to house them if we ever have ducklings.

    I've seen many vids by other homesteaders who promote raising chickens and ducks together. The ducks actually protect chickens from predators. What about eating/harvesting/selling? Could you discuss this aspect of raising poultry? Thanks!

    • @BeckysHomestead
      @BeckysHomestead  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ducks don't protect anything. Ducks are prey and get eaten by the same exact predators as chickens. As the old saying goes "birds of a feather flock together". That means they don't mix on their own. You can force them to live together. When my ducks and chickens are in the yard they are never together☀️❤️☀️

      I have a duck in with my chicks. I raised them together & he, Stevie after Stevie Wonder, does great. He's a Crested duck & gets along with everyone. He doesn't do what Becky said about her duck. In fact he's it backwards. He stays back & let's the chicks eat then he joins in. Yes all water gets dirty. I think the chicks do more then Stevie does. Bc they set on top of the rim of the water dish & poops in it. I've studied them very closely, when I set in my shop. It's not him. He hates getting wet. I tried to put a pool in the pen & he will not go near it. Don't know why?
      Well good luck,

    I have ducks and chickens together. My chickens are much more aggressive than the ducks. I started out with a male blue Swedish who was being chased and treated badly. He stayed in my coop by himself for a while and then I added my feathered chickens and young ducks. He is being mr mom to the baby ducks. My chickens are more like raptors. I have 3 barred rocks, 3 Easter eggers and an olive egger. I think I have young roosters?

    I kept all types of poultry together.
    Ducks, geese and chickens and game chickens.
    As long as you have enough space, the right number of females for each type of fowl.
    Rooster = 7 hens
    Drake = 5 hens
    Gander = 2 geese
    Never keep a pair unless they are geese.
    Roosters and drakes will over mate their single female.
    I keep a treo of geese as they don't like fighting in their flock and will stop the ducks and chickens from fighting. They also keep Hawks and eagles away.
    Chinese geese or tuft Roman geese are great. Ebden geese if you have eagles as ebden geese get 25 plus pounds.
    On average each duck eats 4 to 7 oz of food per day.
    I would recommend all breeds except piking ducks.
    They are good layers but you are right they eat way to much food and they don't free range very well.

      Nothing is a guarantee with Hunter another Predators out there but it's a possibility they could come back. Chickens and ducks act a certain way overall but just like anything else they do have personality traits individually. ducks and chickens can live together while having problems it's just matters the duck the chicken and how much space you give them

      I think it is the female that determines where they go to hatch out the spring babies. Sometimes they join up with a group and stay together. You will have to wait and see. I say if they come back feed them what I say because food is a good reason to return☀️❤️☀️

    We had a breeding duck pair when I was young. The mom would hatch a few chicks and if we didn’t catch it right away the parent (probably the dad) would drown all of them in the pool the same day.

    Hi! ☺ I'm enjoying your video about ducks & chickens. I intend to finish watching it after
    x-mas errands! ☺ I'm anxious to share with you that I have 14 ducks, (13 Muscovy, & one Runner duck) living happily together with 4 chickens. If you're not familiar with either of those kinds of ducks; research them! I think you will enjoy it. Again, I will definitely finish watching your video. Happy Videoing! ☺☺😎😎

    She doesn’t know much by how she’s feeding her ducks and chickens bread anybody who has farmed for a while knows that that shit chokes them it’ll absorb in the throat with the moisture you’re never supposed to feed them bread

    If they have enough space and the food is spread over a wider area they will get along just fine but the only problem is if you have a drake and he tries to tread the chicken hens. Their reproductive organs are different and the hen could be seriously injured.

    Also they can get along cuz we had Chickens and 2 ducks they never bothered to care bout each other or even acknowledge they exist

    I believe ducks hatch out more because the likelihood that predators will get their babies is high. We lived on a lake and it was so adorable to watch 14-15 tiny ducks swim along following their mother. Sadly as the days and weeks went on there would only be three or four left. The snapping turtles & larger fish got them.

    Someone has offered me ducks and I turned them down because I don’t want to house them with my chickens. I love ducks and would love to build them a small house near my pond. However, I do have a problem with hawks and owls. You’ve answered the owl issue, but do you have an answer to protecting them from hawks? Also, is anything needed to winterise their house?

    In my experience, yes you can! As long as they were either raised alongside each as hatchlings OR if you have small duck breeds and large chicken breeds. For example, I have mostly Brahmas, Sussex, and New Hampshires and my ducks are Khaki Campbells and Calls. Other small ducks that go well with LARGE chickens: Welsh Harlequins, Magpies, and Mallards (but not Rouens). We also have an American Buff goose who is too much of a sweetheart to assert herself. If anything, we've actually observed the brahma rooster kicking ducks away from food. Feeding in two different areas of the yard helps alleviate any bullying. We put them all in a shed, drakes and all. The chickens roost, the ducks and goose bed down. Only issue is we can't have any silkies! This is because they can't roost and we don't want any drakes getting any ideas (duck rape will kill a chicken).

    1:09 that chicken was like "what's your problem?!", feel sorry for her. Ducks can be even rounder and have round beaks, but they're terrifying when they attack

    I am uncertain what you are saying. I believe you are saying 'runner' ducks, tall & lean. But, what is the smaller ones? Thanks for the video. I purchased 3 ducks (believe to be runner's, tall & lean) when I purchased the chicks. I will seperate soon!

    My mom has Cayuga ducks (the all black ones) and they definitely run the show. They'll go after the dogs if the dogs get too close to them. Kinda funny to see a big dog run from a duck.
