I used a 18gal tote and drilled 3.5" holes half way up.
They can get their heads in but they cant get in it.
Still get feed and some dirt in it but not bad enough to change it every day

I have bantam chickens with one couple of geese, they free range during the day and sleep in the same coop at night. I've chosen docile breeds so they can coop good together. The geese have a kids sand pool for bathing in the garden, the chickens sometimes sit on the border to drink; I think you can add one into your aviary as long as you don't have baby chicks.
I get super nervous with my silkies and frizzle breeds. They drown so easy!

I’m honestly shocked that I still somehow have grass!!! I think it’s just that it’s such a big enclosure. I really don’t know but I’m guessing the days with grass are numbered hahah!

My brother-in-law raises chickens and ducks together. The ducks are afraid of the chickens and there was an excess of drakes. The chickens were not bothered but the hen ducks were being harmed. He had some duck meals to fix the problem.
As long as ducks can immerse themselves in water and have a clean environment they will be happy and healthy so people who want to keep ducks don’t have to think it’s a must,yeah it would be great but not everyone has/can have a pond,I have Indian runner ducks/drakes and a khaki Campbell drake and they have a kiddie pool in each pen and they are very happy 😊,I don’t keep them in the same pens with my chickens though I don’t want their feathered feet getting in any mud ♥️🐓🦆🥰

I just got 2 female ducks, my first time owning them & I’m learning as I go. Probably the most challenging thing so far has been that they don’t get a case of the sleepies at night like the chickens & so catching them to put them to bed has been difficult! I can’t convince them to walk into a small space to go to bed, as they are frightened of people, so I have my work cut out for me befriending and training them
This is such a fantastic idea! Really want to get ducks but ive been debating it because theyd HAVE to be with my chickens also. Maybe not at night but during the day so they could be out.
If you're at home most of the time or enough time you could always separate a section and add a deep pool for certain times of the day and only invite ducks in. Doesn't have to take up much space. Or they seem happy like they are.
Our chickens and ducks live in harmony. Most of them were raised together-ish from chicks/ducklings. The babies were in separate brooders but next to each other and as they got bigger they went outside together for short periods of time until they were sent to the coop. While they live in harmony, they mostly keep to their own kind. 😅
Mine too except for my big duck who is in love with a rooster haha.

I have a rescue 5 year old Cayuga drake in with my 7 chicken hens. So a few reasons why this works is he was raised by a barred rock hen who we also received as a rescue. He had up until recently lived exclusively with chickens. He basically thought he was a chicken. He was also overweight, so even trying to catch a hen was basically impossible for him. He was niacin deficient so he limped too. All that said he left our chickens alone and just hung out with him "mom". However we decided to be safer than just trusting him and bought three female Cayuga ducklings. We raised them separately until they were about 8-9 weeks and then put them in a segregated fenced area of the poultry yard. The drake could see them, but not get to them and neither could the chickens. He was genuinely afraid of them at first, but after a month or so he has decided he is a duck and the Cayuga girls are his flock now. He acts like a drake towards them and he is unfamiliar with consent, but drakes be drakes. He still hangs out with his "mom" and the Cayuga hens have begrudgingly accepted her as a mother in law. One thing that is hilarious is the Cayuga hens are far more aggressive towards the chickens than him, and the runt among them challenges the lead chicken hen frequently. The chickens give the duck hens a wide berth.
Great idea with the old pool! What about using a super strong pond liner. I was thinking maybe dig down 2 inches into the dirt then put down the pond liner fill up w/ water? Would it be easy to clean out? I don't know but Thought I would toss out the idea to you as you have ducks. We are thinking of getting ducks but not completely sure just yet.

Great video! We had ducks we kept in a separate coop from the chickens and last month a predator managed to get ALL of the ducks! We plan to keep them in the same coop next time around

Look into building a pond with an auto drain and fill system. They have premold ponds are dig and line yourself. Some electronic valves and timers for the auto drain, flush, and fill for the rest.
The point was to have something shallow enough for the chickens not to drown. What you’re suggesting wouldn’t be worth the money/effort is it’s only gonna be a couple inches deep.

I got 5 ducks and 9 chickens this fall. They are about 8 weeks old. But I think 3 ducks might be drakes 😭 I love them very much so I don’t want to get rid of them. What can I do to ensure they won’t harm my chickens. (I have 1 rooster). Should I get more hens for the drakes?
More hens is good but you will probably want to keep them separate from your hens if possible. ❤️
Thank you for touching base on Drakes with chickens. We have 4 chicks and 2 pekin ducklings and I'm starting to notice a change in their quacks and one is much larger. I was thinking if I adopted another female and housed them separately at night would that help prevent him from going after our chickens? I can't find any prevention info online :( they're about 5 weeks now so we have time to prepare) any tips would be appreciated they will be free range during the day so plenty of room to get away
My chickens and ducks grew up together, only problem is Ducks eat too fast, and need to feed separately.

When a duck finds food, she says it out loud and only ducks come over.

Hey, I’m keeping mandarins with my pheasants And chickens… With the water pool(the Blue shell for children), But the males are suffering from wet feather And right now, they Dont use the water anymore(I think Because they know they get wet)… How can I fix this?
Sometimes it won’t get better until after they molt. You can try bathing them in warm water with Dawn dish soap, blow drying them (low setting) and keeping them dry for a couple of days. Then let them get wet and see if it helped. Make sure to check their preening gland to see if it’s infected and check them for mites as well. These things can cause wet feather. So can muddy conditions. Good luck! ❤️

Can you castrate birds? Would that help if possible?
It used to be practiced on roosters (not sure about drakes) but now I don’t know where you would find a vet to do it. It’s just not really done anymore, at least not here in the states.
