Great historical video! My great-grandfather, Nicholas Massengill was killed in the Fraterville mine disaster. His father was the one who donated the land to have Massengill Bridge built going across the Clinch River Lovely Bluff Road. Thank you for doing this!

My grandmother’s family is from Coal Creek and two of her uncles were killed in the mine explosion. When you show the cemetery, their tombstones are visible at well as my Great-great grandmothers. She was buried outside of the circle close to her two sons. Thank you for sharing this video.

My mother’s parents, and grandparents graves are also visible in the video. Galloway & Henson…

@@angelacarroll2335 so do I. Lol I just think it would be a bad thing. What if new people showed up and there like " wow it's the real Rocky top" then they cut off the exit and are like "what is this" lol. I think pigeon forge TN would have been better to name Rocky top in my opinion lol

I live just north of there in Jacksboro. I never knew much about their history. I worked with the former mayor that was in office during the time of the name change to Rocky Top. There was going to be an amusement park built there, but unfortunately it didn't work out.

Jon,I'm so glad you went there. My grandparents are buried there in the Pine Hill cemetery.
I never knew them. They passed away before I was born.
I plan to go there soon.
My grandfather worked at Coal Creek mines.

My mom's side of the family was from there. A train fell off the trestle by the Piggly Wiggly I believe it was back in the '80s. I was actually there at my grandparents. It happened in the early morning hours. There were train cars on the ground that fell from the trestle. My favorite place to be! Can't wait to go back!

Part’s of the movie Burning Rage was also filmed in Caryville, Tennessee 5 miles north of Lake City ( Rocky Top). I remember watching them film parts of the movie and got Barbara Mandrell, and Tom Wopat’s autograph when they came into a restaurant in Caryville that my uncle Rusty Massengill ran back in 1983-84.

I was born there is the late 70’s. I no longer live there but I consider it my home town. The town has not changed much at all except near the highway. I’m sort of glad the old building remain. I remember the blue coal mine building also. My mom took me up there a few years ago.

My mother’s family is from here. My mom was born here in 1943, and her mom in 1914. Her grandparents were A.T. & Lillie Galloway. I spent a lot of time there in the 60’s & 70s. They are buried at Clear Branch Cemetery across from the Fraterville part of the cemetery. I visit once every 3 months, or so and always stop at Coal Creek Smokehouse to eat. Also one of my uncles was the first manager of Norris Dam State Park. His name is Boone Powell….

I live in Fresno California, and they have some great places you can visit with one tank of gas. It takes a little over two hours to get to the coast, and you can get to Bass Lake around an hour or a little longer. Madera is a 1/2 hours drive north of us, and you can go north up to Yosemite National Park within a few hours on the northbound 41 highway.
