Such a good point bringing up how steph is an athletic freak in his own way, its just through coordination and muscle memory rather than the traditional vert or speed.
I like this comment, but about the muscle memory part, I'd like to disagree with that. Yes, muscle memory does have something to do with it, but his shots are irreplaceable, at least as of now is because his shooting form is actually pretty flexible, which makes his shots kind of unique a lot of times. It shows because his shots are quick release and he still makes shots given the variety of defense put up against him. With the variety of defense, each shot is almost unique because he makes the shot with almost different space each time with different defensive setups. On the other hand, the other sharp shooters in the league has a more practiced and memorized shooting form. So they might have a higher shooting percentage than steph, or steph sometimes might slip up and lose in shooting battles somedays because steph's form is so flexible and reflexive, it simply not memorized in the same way. Besides, other shooters learn spacing from curry's style so they also have quick releases around the 3 line, but none can consistently replicate his dominance against lock down defenses at times when shooting tough/little space 3's.

I think what a lot of people fail to realize about Steph is that he's not shooting and making shots the most, he's doing it while in constant motion. There are NBA stars talking about how hard it is to keep up with him. He's in his 30s moving that much. He know's where the ball and goal and everyone on the court is at all times. it's insane.

I'm an OKC fan and I remember arguing back when the swept us, prior to the sweeping, that Curry wasn't that great of a shooter. But at this point it's crazy to not call him the best.
Reasons Dame hasn't reached Steph's level: 1. Winning 2. Defense - For all of the flack that Steph gets for his defense, he's not really been a bad defender over the life of his career. He's just undersized. However, Dame and Trae are actually so bad that teams actively do their best to build defensive walls around them to hide them. Steph over his career has usually been on a good defensive team, but part of that is that he himself didn't lead to massive defensive breakdowns that blew up their system. Why Trae Young hasn't reached Steph's level: 1. Consistency 2. Likeability - People in the league just don't like the guy man The majority of Steph's haters are pretty much just Gilbert Arenas. I'm starting to wonder if Steph threw out the Magic Johnson comparison to Gil just to mess with him, since he's been sneak dissing Steph for years now. He's a massive hater, but I'm not convinced it's all real--he's probably just trying to be sensationalist and get to the bag. The main reason he doesn't do the same to LeBron is because he needs to prop Lebron up, because it makes his failures look a bit more explainable. e.g. He choked away that one game, because Lebron "got in his head." No Gil... you just choked because the lights were too bright. Not enough people give Steph enough credit for coming back from losing to Lebron to put on a bunch of muscle to be ready to not get bullied on defense anymore. It's helped him age more gracefully. No one ever talks about how Kyrie is essentially a discount Curry in terms of what he can bring to your team--he has that crazy dribble and layup package, but Steph gets to the same spots and makes shots efficiently. Despite that, no one is on Kyrie like they are Curry--instead they give him credit for beating Curry and the Warriors that one time, and he's been living on the fumes of that for like 8 years. Over time, what made Curry's defense underrated (post 2016) is that he always had good hands, but after he added some strength, it made it so that it was harder to push him off of a spot, and if you got sloppy with the move trying to get him off the spot, he'd rip the ball from you. People don't talk enough about this. Curry was never really a "bad" defender. He was just the least skilled defender on a team filled with well above average defenders--e.g. Klay and Draymond.

@anryXcurse I think you misread my post. Steph isn't a great defender, but his "weakness" on defense is vastly overstated by the media. The reality is that it's all "spin." No one ever expects a 6'1-6'3 guard to be positive on defense. People just decided to flame Steph for it, as though there's something deficient in his game. The reality is if you have a 6'2" guy defend almost anyone in the league that's bigger than them, they're probably getting cooked. Of players 6'3" and under, he's not even in the bottom half of defenders. Like I said... his "deficiency" on defense is just overstated so that the media has something to talk about. He was also always one of the smallest guys on a team filled with great defenders. Of course, other teams would try to target him. This strategy hasn't usually worked though--we can argue that it really only has yielded good results in those finals with the cavs where gsw lost. They did it to cook his legs and slow down his offense. However, his conditioning is so good that it takes forever to ware him down. So is steph a bad defender? Or just the weakest option on a team filled with better ones? It's always been the latter option. Now he's getting older and the critics will still try to use this against him, but again... historically, no one has expected some guy past 36 to be a positive on defense, but somehow, he's going to get flamed for it in particular.
Sorry Curry is just different from Trae and Dame. The physical conditioning of Steph alone is far greater than those two. And fact is that in an open gym, Steph is just a better shooter. I don't know. 99.99% of folks would call MJ "generational" and Kobe made it to the HOF by successfully replicating every aspect of his game. And you could say that Lebron is just a more athletic version of Magic. When he was playing, Tim Duncan struck me as pretty boring and nothing special, but looking back, he absolutely dominated the NBA and is "generational talent" in my book. In the last 10 years, Steph took the Warriors to the Finals 6 times and won 4 titles. He's a 2 time MVP. I'd say Steph has done pretty well in an era that should have otherwise been totally dominated by LeBron. No one comes close to what he's been able to accomplish and how he does it on the court.
It still irks me how people started to think Steph's not performing up to expectations in his Olympic games when it's clear how he's not all just about shooting the basket. Almost every offensive play they have, he's somehow part of it. It's just that with guys like Lebron and KD, there are too many options to choose from. By the raw definition of talent (especially on the physical aspect), I wouldn't call him a talent, like I wouldn't necessarily call Bryant by that same metric. But the work they put in skill wise and mentally is what put them in that generational (and beyond) status. Curry wasn't always that cardio demon that we know now. He has had crazy work to get to that point. Though at this point the fact that he is STILL doing and more at 35+ now might be his talent.

Adding KD actually weakened the original concept, but made a stronger team working a different model -- Kerr's system with some hero-ball. Efficient because of the quality at so many positions, but not as much fun to watch. The 73 win team was the apex of Kerr's system. They didn't have KD yet, but had much more movement and deception. That was their peak, artistically. I think they exhausted themselves pushing for the win record when they really needed to rest, and coast into the playoffs.

It's funny when people say Kevin Durant or Stephen Curry are not physical. Basketball isn't boxing. Endurance and speed are greater attributes than strength when you need to outplay someone for 60min. If Steph is generational is a tough statement. You can usually only claim it once somebody left the league for a decade or two and still nobody could walk their shoes. So for Steph we need to wait some 20+ more years to really make that claim. But boy is he fun to watch now.
Curry has changed what it means to be a great shooter. It might be a while before we see another guy with his shooting ability. Many guys have been labeled as having "unlimited" range but no one fits that description like Curry. He is a legitimate threat the moment he takes two steps over halfcourt. Just like how for basically everybody playing like Shaq isn't attainable because they're not born with that type of size & strength. Most people, if not virtually all of them, are not born with this level of hand-eye-coordination.
Steph Curry is a generational player, he just isn't a generational talent. Kobe Bryant is another example of that, as great as he was he wasn't a generational talent. I say that because most people consider talents to be physical traits that as Gil mentioned, you can't replicate. If you are old enough you remember the "wanna be like mike" ads and stuff. Millions of kids saw that and millions of kids used all his moves on the playground but when it came to getting to the NBA and actually being compared to Michael Jordan seriously, only one succeeded. Kobe didn't get there because of any of his physical abilities, he didn't have the same speed, the vertical, the hand size, none of that. The reason Kobe got there was because he was willing to work out at 4 am, then at 8am, then at 2pm, go to shootaround and play the game that night and then stay longer than anyone else after the game to keep working. Kobe and Curry both have the same "talent" if you want to call it that. Work Ethic, Determination, Competitiveness whatever you want to label it as, that is what separates them from everybody else. There will be another Steph Curry some day, but nobody in the NBA works like Steph does so I don't think it is anybody in the NBA currently, maybe a young guy like Ant has some chance but he has other ways to get the job done. But you can't define that the same way you can with height, hand size, vertical, all that stuff. But it comes down to whether you consider determination and work ethic a talent or not.
As someone who doesn't watch basketball much (except during the Olympics and paying attention to LeBron being on the game multiversus) I never knew Steph was being downplayed by other top players. I was under the impression that he was the best if not one of the best of all time based on how fans of basketball I talk to are.

I think what a lot of people fail to realize about Steph is that he's not shooting and making shots the most, he's doing it while in constant motion. There are NBA stars talking about how hard it is to keep up with him. He's in his 30s moving that much. He know's where the ball and goal and everyone on the court is at all times. it's insane.

Steph changed how the 3 is played & evolved spacing to another level for the game. 20 years from now his name will always be mentioned when talking the sport of basketball.
I'm an OKC fan and I remember arguing back when the swept us, prior to the sweeping, that Curry wasn't that great of a shooter. But at this point it's crazy to not call him the best.
Reasons Dame hasn't reached Steph's level:
1. Winning
2. Defense - For all of the flack that Steph gets for his defense, he's not really been a bad defender over the life of his career. He's just undersized. However, Dame and Trae are actually so bad that teams actively do their best to build defensive walls around them to hide them. Steph over his career has usually been on a good defensive team, but part of that is that he himself didn't lead to massive defensive breakdowns that blew up their system.
Why Trae Young hasn't reached Steph's level:
1. Consistency
2. Likeability - People in the league just don't like the guy man
The majority of Steph's haters are pretty much just Gilbert Arenas. I'm starting to wonder if Steph threw out the Magic Johnson comparison to Gil just to mess with him, since he's been sneak dissing Steph for years now. He's a massive hater, but I'm not convinced it's all real--he's probably just trying to be sensationalist and get to the bag. The main reason he doesn't do the same to LeBron is because he needs to prop Lebron up, because it makes his failures look a bit more explainable. e.g. He choked away that one game, because Lebron "got in his head." No Gil... you just choked because the lights were too bright. Not enough people give Steph enough credit for coming back from losing to Lebron to put on a bunch of muscle to be ready to not get bullied on defense anymore. It's helped him age more gracefully. No one ever talks about how Kyrie is essentially a discount Curry in terms of what he can bring to your team--he has that crazy dribble and layup package, but Steph gets to the same spots and makes shots efficiently. Despite that, no one is on Kyrie like they are Curry--instead they give him credit for beating Curry and the Warriors that one time, and he's been living on the fumes of that for like 8 years.
Over time, what made Curry's defense underrated (post 2016) is that he always had good hands, but after he added some strength, it made it so that it was harder to push him off of a spot, and if you got sloppy with the move trying to get him off the spot, he'd rip the ball from you. People don't talk enough about this. Curry was never really a "bad" defender. He was just the least skilled defender on a team filled with well above average defenders--e.g. Klay and Draymond.

The reality is that it's all "spin." No one ever expects a 6'1-6'3 guard to be positive on defense. People just decided to flame Steph for it, as though there's something deficient in his game. The reality is if you have a 6'2" guy defend almost anyone in the league that's bigger than them, they're probably getting cooked. Of players 6'3" and under, he's not even in the bottom half of defenders. Like I said... his "deficiency" on defense is just overstated so that the media has something to talk about.
He was also always one of the smallest guys on a team filled with great defenders. Of course, other teams would try to target him. This strategy hasn't usually worked though--we can argue that it really only has yielded good results in those finals with the cavs where gsw lost. They did it to cook his legs and slow down his offense. However, his conditioning is so good that it takes forever to ware him down.
So is steph a bad defender? Or just the weakest option on a team filled with better ones? It's always been the latter option. Now he's getting older and the critics will still try to use this against him, but again... historically, no one has expected some guy past 36 to be a positive on defense, but somehow, he's going to get flamed for it in particular.
Sorry Curry is just different from Trae and Dame. The physical conditioning of Steph alone is far greater than those two. And fact is that in an open gym, Steph is just a better shooter. Maybe Dame and trae can beat him with range, maybe. But they can't even beat him in a three point contest. I'll rather have steph taking a three honestly, he's just that good. It's not cos of haters or nothing. Steph's just better at team basketball. The fact that he led the league in scoring when he had the worst team in the league speaks for itself.

I don't know. 99.99% of folks would call MJ "generational" and Kobe made it to the HOF by successfully replicating every aspect of his game. And you could say that Lebron is just a more athletic version of Magic. When he was playing, Tim Duncan struck me as pretty boring and nothing special, but looking back, he absolutely dominated the NBA and is "generational talent" in my book. In the last 10 years, Steph took the Warriors to the Finals 6 times and won 4 titles. He's a 2 time MVP. I'd say Steph has done pretty well in an era that should have otherwise been totally dominated by LeBron. No one comes close to what he's been able to accomplish and how he does it on the court.
It still irks me how people started to think Steph's not performing up to expectations in his Olympic games when it's clear how he's not all just about shooting the basket. Almost every offensive play they have, he's somehow part of it. It's just that with guys like Lebron and KD, there are too many options to choose from. By the raw definition of talent (especially on the physical aspect), I wouldn't call him a talent, like I wouldn't necessarily call Bryant by that same metric. But the work they put in skill wise and mentally is what put them in that generational (and beyond) status. Curry wasn't always that cardio demon that we know now. 2:43 hit the nail on the head. It looks attainable but it's really not. Just like how for basically everybody playing like Shaq isn't attainable because they're not born with that type of size & strength. Most people, if not virtually all of them, are not born with this level of hand-eye-coordination.

Steph Curry is a generational player, he just isn't a generational talent. Kobe Bryant is another example of that, as great as he was he wasn't a generational talent. I say that because most people consider talents to be physical traits that as Gil mentioned, you can't replicate. If you are old enough you remember the "wanna be like mike" ads and stuff. Millions of kids saw that and millions of kids used all his moves on the playground but when it came to getting to the NBA and actually being compared to Michael Jordan seriously, only one succeeded. Kobe didn't get there because of any of his physical abilities, he didn't have the same speed, the vertical, the hand size, none of that. The reason Kobe got there was because he was willing to work out at 4 am, then at 8am, then at 2pm, go to shootaround and play the game that night and then stay longer than anyone else after the game to keep working.
Kobe and Curry both have the same "talent" if you want to call it that. Work Ethic, Determination, Competitiveness whatever you want to label it as, that is what separates them from everybody else. There will be another Steph Curry some day, but nobody in the NBA works like Steph does so I don't think it is anybody in the NBA currently, maybe a young guy like Ant has some chance but he has other ways to get the job done. But you can't define that the same way you can with height, hand size, vertical, all that stuff. But it comes down to whether you consider determination and work ethic a talent or not.
As someone who doesn't watch basketball much (except during the Olympics and paying attention to LeBron being on the game multiversus) I never knew Steph was being downplayed by other top players. I was under the impression that he was the best if not one of the best of all time based on how fans of basketball I talk to are.
