You do a great job Mike. I have learned a lot from your videos and thanks for your extra help interpreting my Kayseri rug via e-mail.
Glad I was able to answer your questions...
I used to have a Persian rug and you are right. I cut off the fringe because they do deteriorate. Each rugged at that overtime. I had bought them all second hand or had them given to me.
Hello Mike ! How are you ? Thank you for you interesting explanations !!! I have lot of old carpets … from GG grand parents…I would like to know there value how I ll send you some pictures???? Thank you Denise
Hi,
I cannot give estimates on values as I believe I would need to see the rugs in person. My suggestion would be that you have them evaluated by someone in person. There are some who claim that they can estimate values of rugs by pictures only, but I'm not one of those people. I can give you some basic details about the rugs origin, design and material in about 90% of cases, but never offer any estimates.
To much talking, come to the point ..

Hi Mike. I have bought a rug in a pawnshop. s there any way that can send you some pictures and get your expertise help please?
Great video! Yes, there are a lot of shady rug sellers out there. While this giving great advice, it's also important to look at the thickness of the warp, and the density of the knots. A thick warp with very dense knots is also a hallmark of antique rugs. an 8x10 rug that weighs 40 pounds as opposed to the same size that weighs 70-80 pounds is a decent guide. the more material, the higher the value.
Good advice Sir but my cat wouldn't give a crap if the carpet is a 100 years old or made yesterday? They scratch, rub, roll over , bite over and best still...piss on the carpet....😊😊

I was a victim who bought three "Persian" rugs in an auction in orange County 30 years ago losing tens of thousands! I love Persian rugs and I would never go to an auction again!

Cannot an antique rug have its fringes replaced and they would then look new even tho rug is old. So in that case we could not say it is a new rug just by looking at fringes. Is there another way to determine the age?
Most folks in the rug industry consider the fringes when they examine rugs and as a rule, the fringes have to be the original ones in order for a rug to be classified as an antique. If the rugs are restored (fringes replaced or damaged areas rewoven, dyes added to faded areas, etc...), that greatly lowers the value of the rugs and most would not consider them to be antique...
Truly helpful!
Glad it was helpful!
When I was growing up in Tehran in the 60s and 70s, I would often see carpets thrown on the street (just east of Tajrish on the way to Niavaran) for cars to drive over. I think they were "antiquing" the rugs to sell to the west.
Wow! Thankyou for your knowledge! Rug salesmen arrive from s africa, with boot loads of
"persian" rugs for sale!
I am sceptical! And have not bought. Xxx from zambia in the farming districts
Based on the feedback from many of my clients and years of experience, the traveling rug sellers and exhibitions are oftentimes the biggest scams...be mindful and always check the business history or referrals.
Mike, your videos are really great, and I really appreciate them.
Mike, I bought 2 really nice rugs at a shop in Scottsdale AZ over 15 years ago. They were sold to me as high quality and maybe antique. Are you willing to look at these and give me an idea of history and value. I had them out in a garage sale years ago and a customer told me to take them inside and research them before I sold them. He obviously knew what he was talking about.
what's stopping someone from fabricating those indications of age
Thank you so much for your honest
My pleasure 😊
Love all your videos, I have learned a lot, thank you, but definitely will need to ask for advice on some of my rugs, I thought all were Persian but now have some doubts about 2 of them. Thanks for all your good work and best wishes from Cyprus.
Mike my brother has a good worker of rugs but no factory in Pakistan please help me
Well done!
Thank you...
You’ll see the wool has obviously aged 100 years too. Pretty obvious when up close even with finely woven rugs. We had an antique 8 x 11 Tabriz it was magic.
My grandmother's BF just passed at 1001. I was left the contents of her home. Can you tell if the carpets she had are real? They were wealth. I know the carpets are very old. I will try to send pics 6:17 😅 6:19 6:19
Uuughhh. Don't my know how to be seen be photo
Hi,
You can email me a few pics and please keep the picture size to under 1mb. Will take a quick look and give you my thoughts...
Hey, I have a beauty real or fake Persian rug from the 1940s, would love to broker it off, according to your videos I own a nice rug. I see prices from 9 grand to 299 grand, jus curious of what my rug is worth
I’d give you 50 quid
very informative thank you.
Who cares if it is antique or not. If it is beautiful, then it is beautiful whether old or new.
Collectors care
If u pay for a fake and u can get a real one for the same price I’d be mad. Fakes won’t last near what a real will
I think you have fake brand. Sorry!
Then go pay premium price for a fake. You're Smart
Good information sir
Thanks
...also, there's nothing wrong with machine made rugs, just as long as you're not duped into paying hand-made prices for them. I have both, and they are all visually striking.
Hi from oldbazaar
I was totally wrong.
Although you need to really look up close to get a full idea, this was obvious and I was able to guess them all correctly just based on the colors and the design. Anyone thinking the rug on the left is an antique is a damn fool and deserved to lose their money, ha ha.
I am not an expert, but I have a large collection including a lot of antiques, and after you live with them for a number of years the style of weaving and the colors for the different periods are unmistakable.
But there are really good quality fakes out there that are not so easy to tell. The two newer rugs here don't appear to have been made as antique fakes. They just look like newer rugs and would not fool anyone with any knowledge or experience.
I would not buy any carpet from this man
4 mins of introduction takes time...
Hi Mike, thanks again for all the information you provide.
Why is the Isfahan rug so inexpensive even for a new rug?
Hi Fatma,
The Isfahan like many good quality Persian rugs is in the worst possible age group, which is about 40 years old. Much like home furnishings, cars and many other things, people value new , old and especially antique, but rarely "used". This Isfahan is simply too common for most and many people will sell these types of Persian rugs for very cheap on eBay or in local listings. It's simply supply and demand economics and this is why it was sold for the low price.
This video should be five minutes long!
If you stopped repeating yourself, you could cut the video to 5 minutes.

yeah yeah , antique , get to the point .
A 4 x 6 Isfahan $500..nonsense.An old wool Qum like that $5000..nonsense again
Why do you say that?
@@lydiahubbell6278 Hi..that old Wool 4 x 6 Qum $5000 pure baloney.
Go see auction prices (ie wholesale)
$400..$600..etc then add buyers premium. The highest was $4k and it was four times this size .Wool Qum overall in general are not very valuable as though the wool is good and strong the designs are stff and unimaginative for the most part and colors bordering on brash.I see nothing of the great Qum silks showing in the character of the wool Qum rugs. They began making carpets in the 50's I think it was there are no overly valuable very old Wool Qum.
That repeating design if you like it look for an old Senneh they were famous for that design.Sort of like 19th Century Feraghan and the great overall Herati design they made
And that fine Isfahan $500 baloney..maybe that's what he would pay for one to resell it, but from Isfahan new wholesale $500 never.
@merseybeat1963 my thoughts exactly
Nonsense ghom start making rugs between 40‘s and 50‘s 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
@@farshadN Yes 40s-50s price is ridiculous
Why would anyone buy a 100 year old rug? That’s just gross.
I have hundred year old rugs that are in as good of condition as any new rug. But no new rug can match the colors and design of antique rugs. Antique rugs are some of the most beautiful objects in the world.
6 min in to video and no sign of how to find out which one is older,at the best this 2 min of informative video and 18 min of yapping and unnecessary talk to extend the video😡
even a machine made rug is more than $500,how is an 40 years old hand made ISFAHAN rug is $500?
It doesn't look like you really know much about Persian rugs, you can't even buy that in Iran for $500😂
