I'm Irish so was used to the UK and Irish versions of the show. I remember being shocked the US knew about the show and it had the same set and music and graphics but I had no idea who Regis Philbin was (Chris Tarrant hosted in the UK, Gay Byrne in Ireland)
My opinion is that ABC predicted someone was likely to win the million soon, so they decided to test this scenario by having Paul Lassiter win it all. And believe it or not, the rehearsal paid off when John Carpenter became the first real millionaire.
