  • Could there possibly be a contender for the throne? Will the Klamper be unseated as the king of mechanical disc brakes? It beggars imagination.

    I’ve been using Mint Mobile for about a year now. I’ll be honest, it took a little while for it to work as I expected (likely my fault). I’ve had been waiting for these Growtac brakes for almost a year after trying them out at Velo Orange. Many times I almost pull the trigger on the klampers, but I’m glad I waited as I am enjoying the linear pull on the Growtacs.

    Nice review! I ordered a silver pair for my Sklar build. Looking forward to seeing the brakes irl. Surprised how much lighter they are than Klampers!

    DiaCompe Tech-77 levers work great for short-pull road disc brakes such as the Growtacs. Crust sells them, cheap AF. BMX classic, apparently. Been using them about a year on a Bridge Club paired with TRP Spyres, no complaints. I'd pair them with these Growtac Equals, but $400 for a pair is a little out of the budget.

      Have some new old stock from the 90s. Couldn’t get them to feel as good as my Pauls. They’re cool though. The brakes are spendy, but they work very well.

    To me the most economical brakes are shimanos mt200. Their 105 r7020 brakes are pretty killer too.

    Just went looking for these on eBay and elsewhere and almost nothing. One single caliper (misspelled glowtac) selling for over $300....bye now!

    If you keep this up, I'm going to have to buy a frame that supports disk brakes... like maybe a Hardtack?

    At $365 according to their website for the flat mount that is not a competitive price for pure mechanical. I went with the Yokozuna hybrid calipers. Expensive but the hydraulics make them worth the asking price. You can't beat the power of hydraulics with a cable, never going to happen. I don't get why everything from Japan is so damn expensive.

    I wish I could find out if these would work for MTB applications. I only see cable brakes in use on road. That's a shame.

    • @ThePsychicDerailleur
      @ThePsychicDerailleur  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In the old days we had to use cantilevers, and U brakes and then finally linear pull. Why on earth wouldn’t a cable disc brake work on a mountain bike?

    • @decaysaypluhtheyst
      @decaysaypluhtheyst ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ThePsychicDerailleur i suppose what i meant was that i don't see anyone using cable brakes in modern MTB applications of an extreme nature. XC, DH, DJ, Enduro or the likes. But I would assume one would enjoy the adjustability and ease of maintenance with cable brakes in case of failure on trail.
      Please keep in mind that I'm new to biking and haven't been around to see modern progression. I will say, i rode a lot in my younger years and had never even ridden a hydraulic style brake or a disc brake until recently.
      I'm just trying to research before building my first high quality bike. I only see these applied to road bikes and i think it's a shame. Thank you for confirming that they would suit my needs.

    • @ThePsychicDerailleur
      @ThePsychicDerailleur  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@decaysaypluhtheyst I don’t do “extreme”. Never have. Your results may vary. That being said, if you’re buying a complete bike you’re not going to get a choice. It’ll be hydro, they’ll likely be pretty good. Don’t overthink it.

    The Growtac has been sparking debate on another channel. If online anecdote can be relied upon Velo Orange has already been inundated with orders and enquires. If Santa is feeling well disposed towards undeserving middle aged men I can start writing a wish list!

      In addition to the short-pull levers you mentioned, there are lots of old ones out there. The most powerful are early 90s Shimano SLR Plus ones, which was what Servo Wave was called back then. They increase both pad clearance and leverage by around 40 percent. I hope you do a ride review of the Equals!

    I'd like to see Growtac on some technical or mtb descents like I've seen here for the Paul's hah I swear only few have proven the Paul's off road use vs others, I'm in the market for a pair of something and don't want to spend the amount for hybrids because I already have bikes that have great hydros....I just want one good pair of mechanicals for my do it all gravel hardtail MTB lol
