- In this video, Jason does a follow up to his last video about wire scarring. He styles the same tree and discusses making the best of the material you have. He demonstrates how to work with branches to create pads as well as setting structure to set up the tree for the future.

Even with the wire scars and the too thick branche, it still looks good. However, for my taste, I really don't like the lowest thick branch. I think I would jin it.
Either that or semi cascade it
Maybe everyone does not want to jin it or see it Jin. Not everyone has the same taste that's the beauty of art get over yourself.lol just so you know a lot of you guys come off as cocky and phony experts or bonsai snobs . If you were an expert you already know what you like to do this is obviously a video for beginners or people looking from inspiration but not from the comment section you feel me? No, just a bonsai enthusiast that speaks his mind. In case you missed the last part of my comment here it is again. "However, for my taste, I really don't like the lowest thick branch. I think I would jin it." What do you not understand about the 'for my taste' and 'I think I would jin it'. If you don't like these comments then don't react to it.
Awesome Peter, I finally grown some gut to wire my first Shimpaku semi- cascade. It's turn out pretty good looking. Can't wait for this baby to have a new home when the right season to repot. Thank you for sharing all the great and educational video.

Nice work. I bought my first real bonsai tree from you maybe 5 years ago, not sure about timeline, but it was the grand Chinese elm and had super nice movement. I cut it down and it started to become a really nice shohin but two years ago we had a really warm spell before spring for about a week then dropped below freezing overnight and I lost several trees that being one. I have really nice trees now but still miss that one because it was really the tree that started my journey

A lot of bonsai demos you see the artist working with top notch material, but for the average home bonsai enthusiast you often have to work with average material. So this is a great demo of how you can still create something beautiful. I'd love to see you do a series of these videos. Gives you a point of difference from other bonsai artists.
Thanks for this video! I found a small Juniper for $10 at my local nursery has some similar issues to this tree, no wire scars but some rough pruning for sure. I'm excited to put some of these tips into practice.
hello jason thats the beauty ,when you buy any material from nursery you have to create from unwanted tree or undesirable material that is the hardest part . i do it all the time my garden is full of collected and nursery plants

Great work and I really like your reasoning. I like how you take the tree to make something that is not like every other tree out there. Very well done. The only difference I would have done is that at 6:00 min you were talking about a branch that I would have used as a jin. Also at the top of the tree you cut a large branch that I would have make into a jin and then made a shari to connect those two to the jin at the bottom. As you can tell I like jin. I find it so interesting how different people take the same material and create something that is so different. I loved this.
Jason you have great talent and skill. My trees just aren't there yet after 3 years. Still making improvements though.

for me that's the most fun, too. creating great stuff out of basically nothing where pretty much everyone else would just ignore it and move on to better material. it's like stone sculpting: the thing you want is already in there, you just need to find it. that's the real challenge and beauty of this craft :)

Jason, you did a beautiful job with this tree but I would make a jin and shari out of the long straight bottom branch. The angle at which that bottom branch moves breaks up the movement you have in the rest of the tree.
I like what you done with this. If i was in your position,that bottom straight branch has potential. Even to thicken up the trunk, then make some awsome gin.

The low thick branch does look a little off. What do you think about training the movement down into a cascade for that 1 branch. I think that would be very unique.

Excellent job. One thing I’ve always wondered about wire scars: is it possible to carve away at them in order to hide them, or at least diminish their impact by making them look like they’re part of a bigger scar? Just a thought...I’m not experienced enough to have tried this or understand what the negative impact would be.

Looking at the tree my first thought with that first branch....could you have used a branch splitter to wire it and bring it down so that it eliminated that straight area???

Hello Jason, thank you again for providing these amazing, helpful videos The needles on my Chinese Juniper appear to be much longer than any of the ones I have seen in images/videos (more like a pine tree) vs my Japanese Juniper. Should I trim these to a desired length, or is there another way to accomplish this? Or should I just leave them as they are? Thank you

Material like this is not easy to find for everyone. Here in Ohio there are no nurseries that have material but cookie cutter airlayers and babies
I think the lowest branch is messing up the bonsai. The plant no longer looks like a tree. If you remove the lowest branch, I think you would get a really nice Bunjin.
Would disagree, not all bonsai trees have to look like trees you would find in nature
