This synth should be called “Enya-in-box” 😁
if they repackaged it with D50 and a couple of J60 arps sounds it really would be. imagine the marketing on that lmao
I’ve read she did use the 550 along with the D50 as mentioned.
Funniest part is seeing how much fun he is having with that vocoder.
It’s all in the fingers. Like trying to make a guitar patch sound realistic on a keyboard, you must choose the appropriate intervals. Brilliant as always Dr.Mix.
Barber Adagio for Strings. It's usually done either with strings or acapella vocal. This would be the perfect mix.

I think it came out in 2007…. I got my hands on it when it was first released… it really is a great vocoder. One of the best in its class.

Honestly, if you would bring out an album where you just do this kind of tests and mini riffs, I would definitely hear it.
I know it's different but, it would be interesting to hear you perform the same music on the Jupiter X vocoder, just for comparison (although not a comparison). Most of us aren't talented enough to perform classical works and the likes. The question I'm asking is, do I need a VP-550? One fears the answer will be YES!

I love my VP-550! I got mine new when we were making an electronic Christmas album. It worked quite well for that. Great demo of it!

Do the theme from "Harry's Game" by Clannad. I think the vocoder sounds you've demonstrated would work well with it. You might want to get a guest female vocalist in for the lead part though - someone fluent in Irish.

Beautiful. Both the sound and the look of the synth.
Impressive, especially mastering all these genres.
Finally snatched up one of these for a pretty good price a few months ago. One could argue it doesn’t offer a lot compared to other synths of the time period but I enjoy it’s simplicity and YES I can pretend I’m Enya now 😘🥰

Very good test ! I have the VP-550 and also the VP-7 (with Gregorian choirs ). When you mix both, it's magic ! I love Roland...

I've been shopping for a premium stage keyboard that I can use with the group of guys that I jam with. I've heard a lot of fantastic sounds from the industry's offerings and, while I think they're great, I also know that I will not ever really use many of them. Clavinets are a good example. But, when I stumbled on to THIS video, I realized that you have a keyboard here with this VP550 that I would use EVERY TIME we jam. My band members and I have already found just how great human voices are when they are used as back ground pads. But with only three of us in the band, two of us are trying to harmonize while the other guy is singing the lead. This machine could answer our prayers and make everything so much easier while, at the same time, fattening up the sound beyond belief. My next question is: Why the HELL did Roland stop making these things? It must be because so many people didn't know what they were and so, they just sat in the music stores. Honestly, i never knew such a machine existed until I lucked onto this video. I would have bought one years ago if I'd only known. Do you know of any modern keyboards that offer this same capability?

Great instrument and demo, i have the VP7 that is the same the vocal section and i use it very often connected to Midi keyboards
I was waiting for it and then it comes @6:20 rrrrobotnik.. Oh man, around the same time you picked this up I bought the KORG MS2000B analog modelling synth with it's own microphone fixed on top. Only a 4 poly synth for some reason but the Vocoder on it is really good and I still believe it is one of the best out there as it can be fully manipulated. Saying that, this VP-550 hit the sweet spot from the get go with a beautifully balanced rich sound.

A short but very effective vocoder part is from "In the Air Tonite" by Phil Collins. I've tried doing on the Juno DS60. Its tricky to replicate. As always EPIC playing !!!

Great demo and very pleasing sound. Lots of modern synths have vocoders but they are oft not so clear.

Vocoders have evolved to a higher standard, up to a very practical level.

Neil Young used a vocoder on his song "Sample and Hold". Styx used one for Mr Roboto. Lots of tracks out there with the vocoder.

Hey Claudio, how about a version of 'only you' by Yazoo but done acapella like the flying pickets version that also topped the charts nearly 40 years ago(aaarghhh how old am I?) I bet you could do a brilliant version with that beautiful beast. And I'm sure you would have fun too, watch their Xmas appearance on TOTP for some inspiration.

You could do an entire album with just this instrument encompassing multiple genres; why don't you?
Sounds amazingly good! I'm sure a large part of the awesomeness of this demo was your skill at chord voicings and playing... but do you have any thoughts about how much of an improvement something like this is over software vocoder plugins, for example? I'm quite interested in using vocoder sounds in future projects, but I don't want to spend big money if I don't have to.

I have the Roland V-Synth with the voice card and it is amazing and great fun for hours. Interesting, how are these units holding their value!
