From April 1979 to October 1988 I commuted into Holborn Viadact from St. Mary Cray so the sights and sounds of the 415EPB's are a wonderful reminder of those days. I was working at Pearl Assurance at the time. One thing that has stuck in my mind from those days was the cost of my first annual season ticket which was £327.
Love the noises the most. The guard pinging go. The noise of the motors as it accelerates. It’s all so familiar. The ancient AWS for a red or amber. The creaking wooden frame. And yet it appears to be 33 years ago 😮 see how quick the stop/start is with a guard onboard!! Must be hitting near 70mph 5:11 ? Or is that a trick of the camera? Love the old bridge pillars 9:45 are they still there? (It’s been YEARS since I was here).
I'm going to say later in 1988 as Ludgate House is under construction on the south side of Blackfriars Bridge, but after May as there's a Thameslink train.
I used to drive into Holborn Viaduct between 1976-1979 - you had to get that close to the buffers as the platforms were exactly 8 coach lengths with almost no room to spare. If you stopped a bit short you would foul the adjacent line, and would need to wait until everyone was off to pull up since with slam doors then lots of people would have doors open and be jumping off even before you came to a halt. It was indeed toe curling, especially with vacuum-braked 4-SUB units, as with those you didn't have the flexibility to release and reapply the brake multiple times as you could on the 4-EPB units.
The branch to Holborn Viaduct was very short. These type of cab rides are so valuable because it has all changed
I miss the old station. Always a natter, a smoke on the platform, used to sit waiting on those red benches.

Used to go to Holborn viaduct when I did jury service back in 1981 at the old bailey as it was only a short distance
Nice video. Holborn Viaduct closed in 1990. The Thameslink service would have been brand new.

@@MichaelCheetham-69 - the SUBs were just straight air brake (auto brake), they didn't have EP brakes as well like EPBs, HAPs CEPs and later.
