I loved the RT’s. Used to get an 87 and 23 to London for the day. Both RT’s when I started that in nineteen-hundred-and-frozen-stiff.
Amazing video. Guessing it was filmed somewhen in 1995 or so. Network Southeast is everywhere, so pre privatization, but the Fareham Eastleigh line is electrified (obv) so post 1990. If I'm remembering correctly, the M3 looks complete just past Shawford, so post Twyford down construction, which puts it about 1994 or so. Amazing fascinating video though. I would have been through here a few times, I used to ride the train along to coastway from Horsham to Southampton pretty regularly between 1988 and 1995 or so.. Edit: the 159 at Winchester confirms 1994 or later - they didn't enter service until then.
Love these rides, Mac. Have you considered digitally upscaling your VHS files. There's software out there - not that I have any experience of it.
Well designed, built to last !!
What's with the faint backing music? Sounds awful. Commentary is great, though.
That hooter needs some cough medicine.
@Mac's Tracks is this one of Nick's or Paul's videos? You have a banner on Sydney Gardens tunnel from Paul's DVD sales routes also the video locks a couple of times from Bathampton Junction to Sydney Gardens.
The St. Helen's RT looks superb, The livery really showed off the lines. Wonder if there is a good book on these buses. Coventry Corporation also bought an RT. GKV 99 from new.
Most interesting. Thanks. Strange that there was no stop at Westbury?
Back in the days of Loco Hauled with class 33s and 5 Mk1 coaches, one of the hourly services did stop the next did not for a while on the Portsmouth -Cardiff trains one was to/from Cardiff the other hour to/from Bristol which I think was the Westbury Stopper?
@@Thunderer0872 But isn't Westbury also important as a place to change trains?
@@phwboothonly when there is a connection. Until recently trains to London or the Weymouth line were only every 2-3 hours, the regional railways fast services only called on alternate hours.
Out of interest, where did you find these ?
A BR employee called Nick recorded these along with him doing lineside footage, but his cab rides are all showcased here with a couple of others on another channel.
I think?
@@Thunderer0872 which channel ?
Would be great to see this video updated to Hi Definition video, still great though....
Great video, but strange to see a stopping service running from Tunbridge Wells to Redhill, because that route nowadays only runs as a non stop service to London Bridge, when the line through Sevenoaks is closed for engineering works.
What a cracking film for its time, yes not best quality but has a lovely charm! Great information & narration, I didn’t realise how beautiful this cross country run is, watched it twice, thanks for posting. Eddie.🤓
Brilliant, very knowledgeable commentary by the man in the know, and the beautiful scenery of Devon, well done!
Excellent captions and chat. Thanks.
They were so noisy.
i play the wherry lines on diesel railcar simulator; nice to see the real thing
That driver was a mind of information, great video and thank for sharing.
Nice to watch this footage. Between 1954 & 1965 we used to take 2 weeks holiday in Lowestoft, sometimes travelling by train, sometimes in my Grandfathers Bedford Dormobile. Overnight (starting around midnight) from Sheffield Victoria on a Manchester newspaper train. Arriving in Yarmouth at Vauxhall, walking over to South Town around 6.30am to catch the Lowestoft train. The link to the video is that the return journey one year involved travelling this route to Beccles as I think there were PW works on the direct line to Yarmouth. At Beccles we reversed and travelled to Yarmouth via Somerleyton Bridge? All the while I tried to convince myself we were going for another 2 weeks holiday in Lowestoft, (I was only 10 years old at the time, or younger!) As well as the clickety clack I used to love following the telegraph wires, dipping down then up again. Happy days.
Must have been via St Olave's, not Somerleyton!
Loved those Days late 80s Anglia Railways used to do Pilot Working Lingwood LCs Strumpshaw and Great Yarmouth Station Great Times
Why are they called harbour lights?
These old buses were great. In cold weather I sat in the front seats behind the engine to get a warm blast of hot air...
RT's have much more character than the Route Master.
Love the detailed information, believe there was also a siding on the down side after Fareham tunnel to serve Funtley Brickworks. Also Bubb Lane (after Hedge End) had an Admiralty siding and at one time a signal box.
Smoking permitted in all carriages, I presume?
Was just the first/end carriage bay before the 1st class compartments you could smoke in IIRC
It's very grainy this video and there's a lot of glare. TBH it's quite dull. 🥱
Been trying to find this video for years after watching it and then it disappeared. Great to see how the areas have changed. Thanks for re uploading it 👍
sound not linked, but added later.
jumped on and off many a RT in the 60's.....great old bangers for sure.
Actually between Ely and Peterborough I didn't see one caption that matched the name in Quail. But there are an awful lot of crossings.
Near the beginning, there is a photo of LYF 1. That registration would now be worth a smalk fortune.
Shame the cameras not up to the task.
Pre Livingston and Khan ! Wonderful Times !
Used to luv em as jump on off anywhere when going school
My dad was a conductor on the buses out of Abbey Wood in the early 70's when we moved to Thamesmead. As a kid, I used to love seeing him at work as he would let me turn the handle on the ticket machine 😎
So nice way before the invasion
Happy memories of the 122 traveling from Kirkdale down to Lewisham to my nans. I'm sure I saw a quick glimpse of Lewisham high st/Loampit Vale before they tore the place apart. Remember seeing the RTs parked up in Molesworth St - behind the Odeon. Nans place was a new flat opposite the coca cola place on the corner of Thurston Rd where I seem to remember the 47 turned right instead of going up the hill towards New Cross. I lived in Sydenham which in the mid 60s was still RT country along with Forest Hill.
Thanks for posting, grew up on the 119 RTs, bit misty eyed here, what ever happened to my country. Make me a time machine somebody please
Thanks for posting that video. My going home school bus, 94 to Orpington from Bromley North. Plus the 47 turning around at The George in Farnborough village.
I boarded a green RF route 322 Watford to Hemel Hempstead at Watford Junction. It had an advert on the rear for Whipsnade and I heard some people ask the driver for tickets to go there. The driver said something like 'We have Persil as an advert as well, but we don't take in washing'. Such a modern-looking 'bus and lovely engine sound. Unbelievable that it was almost a contemporary of the half cab TD.
I know a lot of things ARE better today, but somehow I think we were better off in the 70s, things were nicer, if dirtier, and life was a lot less regulated , and good old inflation reduced your mortgage very quickly.
I can remember the bus route 47 used to go all the way from Shoreditch to Farnborough, back in 1978, when I was thirteen. It was a great day out for kids/teenagers you could go for a walk from Farnborough to Downe. Ah they were the days. These days the route 47 goes from Farnborough to Catford only.☺️
this is a old video must be in the 90s
1996 I think.
Actually, must the very early 80s as Elmsleigh Centre ramp has been built...
Must have filmed these in the summer of 1976. Getting round all those routes with not one rainy day...?
The 62 was one of my local routes. Used it so many times. Its sad to see how these venerable buses were allowed to get so externally shoddy when they still had a few years service to do. Standards certainly slipped. Thankfully we are able to see and travel on the preserved buses from time to time. Great film 😊
Great video. I'm proud to say my local childhood bus route was the 62, one of the conductors was also our window cleaner. I remember they seemed so common around Barking on the 62 and 87 that I had no idea how rare they'd become. Luckily my Grandad knew I loved the old buses and made sure I was there to see them bow-out.
My dad was a driver started of at New Cross then he transferred to Abbey Wood then went to the old Plumstead garage until the new Plumstead opened in the 1980s up until the late 1990s then went over Bexleyheath garage for a few years and now retired
Great knowledgeable commentary in a beautiful part of the country, cheers!
Bloody good that driver. The only Tunnel length i can remember is Shugborough 777 yards.
