    Quasimodo is by far Disney's greatest hero. He is kind, he is different. He sees the world as one filled with potential. He is filled to the brim with hope that the world will see him and love him as he is. Even when the people of Paris scorn him and he is told he has failed his city, he saves it because he is just a genuinely good person.
    I also love the last bit because this show (and the movie):
    Whatever their pitch/You can feel them bewitch you/ The rich and the ritual knells/of the Bells of Notre Dame
    That last bit really does honour Notre Dame as the main character of the story that Victor Hugo so poignantly pointed out. The movie (and the show) begin and end with the Bells of Notre Dame, as if Notre Dame herself is telling the story of Quasimodo.

    My heart breaks every time I watch Phebus and Quasi mourn Esmerelda, the way that Quasimodo says "here lies everything I've ever loved" and the way Phebus cries and holds Esmerelda in the beginning. But when Esmerelda gets up and walks to heaven oh my god I die every time. Ok thanks for coming to my ted talk

    Oh, Victor Hugo. You, sir, were a genius. Gods only know how you penned tales that were so depressing and yet they managed to give hope for the future at the same time. Bravo, bravissimo, sir.
    I will always love Quasimodo. He was the first character I really connected with as a child. I've been visually impaired since birth and, when I saw the film of Disney's "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" in theaters as an eight-year-old, Quasimodo reached out from the screen and grabbed my heart and hasn't ever really let go. Here was a character who, like me, was an outsider and yet, he was kind, a man of faith, AND he ended up saving the day at the end of the story (and yes, I've read the book and know how it differs). So often, characters with disabilities/deformities are their stories' antagonists, or they have hearts of gold but let society's prejudices eat at them (I love you, Erik, the Phantom of the Opera, but it's true). The world needs more characters like Quasimodo so future generations of kids like me can have someone in a story who says, "Hey, the world may not understand you, but don't worry about it. You're just the way the divine meant for you to be." I could go on and on, but I think you get my point--Quasimodo rocks.

    • @Sukuraidogai

      +TheaterRaven
      If you're visually impaired don't you have trouble watching the movie or reading the book or writing this comment? If you can function to that extent I don't see how this made you an outsider.

    • @TheaterRaven
      @TheaterRaven 9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      +Sukuraidogai There are different degrees of blindness, a broad spectrum that falls under the umbrella of being classified as "visually impaired". For me personally, I can read the print of books or on the computer thanks to using magnifiers or getting the book in large print. Other people who are VI or totally blind can read books either in Braille or with software that reads the text out loud to them.
      As for the outsider thing, it all comes down to stereotypes. I'm perfectly happy with how I am and don't mind having to do certain everyday things with accommodations (thought I do wish I could drive), but when society comes in with its prejudices and misconceptions, that's the shitty part. To quote Helen Keller, "The chief handicap of the blind is not blindness; it is the attitude of the sighted towards them".

    I've said this on other "Hunchback" musical videos, but I gotta say it again-- this is probably the most meaningful, most beautiful and most powerful version of "Hunchback" I've ever seen and heard. I LOVE how they mixed the Disney movie and the book. It has humor and sad moments, as well as dark moments-- all of which are human, ya know? Pair that with Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz' music, as well as these actors, and you've got a life-changing piece of theatre.

      Yup. I’m just so surprised it took this long to finally get a stage adaptation

    • @michaelwilliamybarra2409
      @michaelwilliamybarra2409 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      TheMonsterGroovy Technically, it didn’t take this long. In 1999, the movie was adapted into a stage show(referred to by it’s fans by it’s German title: Der Glockner Von Notre Dame), with a book and direction by James Lapine(the same guy who did Falsettos with William Finn, Sunday in the Park with George, Passion, and Into the Woods with Stephen Sondheim, the 2012 Annie revival, and much more).
      That version(which introduced the new songs “Made of Stone”, “Rest and Recreation”, “Esmeralda”, “Top of The World”, and much of the score variants redone here, also some songs that didn’t make it in this version like “Balancing Act”, “City Under Siege(the Original act 2 opener)”, and “Out of Love” and it’s reprise(which is what “In a Place of Miracles”(cut song from the Disney film) took over from)) was more of a mixture of the Disney film narrative (Clopin being the solo narrator, Frollo being a judge, the Archdeacon existing, and the Gargoyles are in this(but firmly established as Quasimodo’s imagination)) with an overall serious(with some light chuckles) tone and added story elements from the novel that merged with the Disney film(like how Frollo talks of being a priest at first, but deciding to become a judge to ward off the sins and vices in Paris, or Phoebus being a womanizer like his book counterpart, but from his talks with Esmeralda(no making out in a tavern), decides to fight for the justice of the oppressed Romani when he refuses to burn the miller’s home down, essentially becoming his Disney counterpart when he gets Quasimodo to help him save Esmeralda(with the Song “Out of Love”, which is what Esmeralda’s “In my life” song was leading to.).
      It basically did really well(playing in Germany, where the Disney film did best financially, with a highly detailed and expensive set, consisting of several hydraulic lifts that are projected over with photos of the cathedral, the Court of Miracles, the Bridge that Phoebus falls from after being shot by an arrow in the Disney film(as the conclusion of act 1 with Esmeralda), a 24 member ensemble that sounded just as great as the 32 member choir and 16 member congregation, in my opinion, and a 25 member orchestra that sounded JUST like the Disney Film(and is my personal preferred arrangements of the score compared to this version)), premiering as the first show to perform in the newly built Berlin (now Theater am Potsdamer Platz) theater, and lasted from 1999 to 2002, earning the title of being the longest running musical in Berlin. Due to having the ending like the novel(Esmeralda dying and Quasimodo killing Frollo, but Also Quasi learning to accept going outside into the world through a short reprise of “Out There” after the Gargoyles sing “The World is cruel..”), however, Disney would never be comfortable back then bringing this version(which is arguably more accessible to kids. No attempted rape of Esmeralda by Frollo for one) to the states.
      After much negotiation, this version from 2014(which I saw live at La Jolla with my aunt and dad) was made when Thomas Schumacher decided to kick James Lapine off the project(something I’m still mad about), even though Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz have mentioned how they were still going to use James’s book when they bring Hunchback to the US, and replaced James with playwright Peter Parnell and Director Scott Schwartz(Stephen Schwartz’s own son). I have my own personal opinions about this version(even being compelled to write my own libretto so I can rewrite the narrative with elements from both this version and the 1999 version, while also using different plot elements from the novel), but I just thought I’d share a bit about the history of the Hunchback of Notre Dame musical as a whole.
      If anyone else is curious of the 1999 version, there are recordings(among several clips) of two different versions of the show on TH-cam:
      1. This one has much of the original cast(like Norbert Lamala as Frollo, and Drew Sarich as Quasimodo, who are GREAT!!!): m.th-cam.com/video/DiKqUvvWD6E/w-d-xo.html
      2. This one of a later performance(with Anne Christin Elverum as Esmeralda and Chris Murray as Clopin, who are also GREAT!!!) which also has English subtitles: m.th-cam.com/video/xP8cM6QRkA4/w-d-xo.html
      There’s also a cast recording of the original cast as well: th-cam.com/play/PLR1MmQZqrpJ4UXTg-SL-s51wG45fAf_Gt.html

    although I have misgivings towards the approach (German version of character design and traits being my favorite), this is my favorite ending. this one not only implies that quasi doesn't commit suicide, but delivers an incredible extension of disney-verse moral through the character smuggling there faces (revealing their imperfections and showing that quasimodo is not actually so different after-all). although the posturing is confusing, the message of acceptance and freedom rings with great clarity. thank you everyone involved for your efforts, and readers for your time and consideration.

    • @michaelwilliamybarra2409
      @michaelwilliamybarra2409 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mo Salareena It’s also very misanthropic in tone. Like the main idea of the book is that all the different characters that are so annoyingly flawed(Esmeralda is a stupidly naive 16 year old girl, and Phoebus is outright idiotic douche of Gaston proportions, along with being a total Don Giovanni while engaged, to name a few) having such gruesome and cruel fates, as well the sarcastic expose on the barbarism of humanity and how utterly f***ed up medieval times were, are basically made as a source of narrative intrigue by Victor Hugo to get into long essays about every intricate design of the Notre Dame cathedral itself as well as express the dying power of architecture as the first form of communication of dogmatic ideals from the church before the rise of the printing press(which is why at one point of the story, it talks about when Frollo in his fate musings says: “This will kill that, the book will kill the edifice”) as a form of communicating these and other ideas. His main point with the fates of these characters is how little they actually affected the world around them, and how in the grand scheme of things, their lives pretty much didn’t matter as much compared to Notre Dame which still stood beyond those times. All of which to raise awareness of Notre Dame, which was very dilapidated by the time Hugo decided to write the novel, and to prevent it from being torn down, which worked of course(and impressively so, since this was before the concept of historical reservation was first thought up)!
      It was a completely different story work than Hugo’s latter works, like Les Misérables, which actually did value the essence of human life while discussing the then present problems of France’s legal system and basically acting as a guide book towards how to make an effective revolution(even if it ends as badly as it did here, or back then before Napoleon Bonaparte’s reign started and before his was exiled the first time round).

      Yes, hearing Quasimodo crying the way he does, come on. It breaks my heart inside! And Quasimodo went through a lot! And then he had to lose his friend. Which made him cry horribly! If I were Quasimodo I probably would be crying horribly as well. But since I am victimized to listen to him crying, I’m gonna have to come up with a solution to this lol. So here’s my solution, say I was a part of the show right I was a cast member right, I was like one of the Saints. I would go to Quasimodo right away and I would get out my iPhone and turn on some music and turn it on full blast and then, I would make him listen to the music. Then, PHOEBUS would come into the room and hear music. I would explain to him that Quasimodo is having an emotional breakdown, and I had to turn on some musical theater songs because I couldn’t bear to listen to them crying the way he did, PHOEBUS would sit down and he would go with it he would just turn on the music even louder to make sure that we could hear the music. I would go see if Esmeralda was awake, because I as the Saints, would wake up Esmeralda and make sure that she stays awake, Esmeralda wakes up, here’s the music consoles Quasimoto before telling PHOEBUS that whoever turned on the music is a genius. And I would say I did it I had one of the Saints turn on the music because I’m a genius! Esmeralda would wake up and say I was sleeping the entire time so you have no need to worry I’m alive. Then she would take Quasimodo‘s hand and say oh this music is so good and she would wanna sing to it like nothing happened. I would say, it’s because I couldn’t bear to hear someone crying so, so loud, so I just turned on the music. Esmeralda would say it was a great choice and we all live happily ever after in the end that I would drastically be the one to change the ending. No seriously, I would change the ending! I would make Esmeralda live.

    A local play house in my area put this on despite COVID, but put some restrictions to keep everyone safe and healthy, and it ended with Quasimodo hugging the deceased Esmeralda, stating that... "Years later, in the crypts beneath Notre Dome, there were discovered two skeletons. One of which held the other in its embrace. The first was a woman...with a woven band around her neck. The second was a man whose spinal column was crooked. When they tried to detach the skeleton he held in his arms, he crumbled...to dust." I BURST into tears behind my mask.
    Needless to say, the play was phenomenal. I've sang "Someday" for fundraisers along with "God Help the Outcasts". One of my favorite movies, and it became one of my favorite musicals as well.

    I wish that reprise was in the key of D like in the original Disney soundtrack.
    You guys know what I mean right?

    • @michaelwilliamybarra2409
      @michaelwilliamybarra2409 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do! As a fan of the 1999 Berlin production(referred to by it’s fans with its German title: Der Glockner Von Notre Dame, and which also ends in the key of D for the finale), I feel ending on the key it began shows the story going back to where it started, whereas this key of C makes it seem like even the storytellers were unsure of themselves as to why they told this story in the first place. There lines in this reprise should indicate that, knowing this tale by heart, they KNOW that their story can’t be summed up by one moral so they offer the last riddle instead.
      Personally though, I feel that they should let the first riddle be “Who is the monster...” like in the film, fooling the audience into guessing an easy answer before realizing how flawed AND good the other characters are(Quasi killing Frollo out of anger for losing Esmeralda, etc.), and then revealing the more complex and overarching riddle “What makes a monster....”. This, under the same key of D, is what I feel made the Disney film so affective narrative wise, because it’s easy to judge someone or something by appearances and actions(as well as clinging to establishments of proclaimed moral authority for these judgments) when there’s far more to them than those things.
      This narrative reminds me a lot of the musical Assassins, by Stephen Sondheim(the same composer lyricist of Sweeney Todd and Into the Woods), which portrays the lives of the several men and women throughout history who tried (successfully or not) to kill the president of the United States. Set in a carnival shooting gallery with the faces of Abraham Lincoln, James Garfield, Ronald Regan, and so on trundling as targets on a conveyor belt, this revenue styled show allows the audience to see figures like James Wilkes Booth to Johnathan Hinkley Jr. as people who are struggling to project their own failed notions of what the American Dream not only is but should be. It talks of how human these people are before they were ultimately branded for their actions and nothing more, questioning both their notions and the policies of the American public as a whole. Plus the main song the show opens with, “Everybody’s Got the Right” and it’s reprise at the end of the show, end in the same key of F# major(with the reprise ending on “a(Bass) note of sadness”, as Sondheim puts it, after the gunshots).
      With the Disney Film’s opening and ending riddles, this stage show could be seen, narrative wise, as about dealing with external forces(The church, through the villagers and Frollo) placing a label on you for one thing you look like(Quasimodo’s disfigurement being called “cursed” or “of the devil”) and do (Esmeralda and the Romani’s lifestyle being branded as same), and how crucial it for an individual to not give into their judgments of you and for you to not judge others even out of retaliation.
      Both the characters here and in Assassins ultimately do give in to those judgements one way or another(the people in Assassins did their attempts and brand themselves for life, Frollo twisted his own moral compass to justify his growing desires, Phoebus threw away a promising career and landed himself in a road leading to nowhere in life, Quasimodo did the monstrous thing of killing the very person who raised him, Esmeralda would rather die than submit herself to the “whore/virgin” dichotomy that Frollo intends to raise her with, etc.), but it’s important to understand that their own shortcomings are their own, not something to automatically judge other people like them with(a more radical example: just because the Muslim religion seems messed up to the eye of the beholder, and because people of that faith have committed a horrible travesty in the beholder’s own country, doesn’t mean the beholder is justified in branding ALL Muslims like this).
      That’s why I personally feel this show should end on the key of D as it’s the song first started, so “I agree with you” is all I meant to say really, even though I just expounded on my own personal views of this show as well.
      Believe it or not, I’m actually working on my own libretto for this show(combining elements from this version and the 1999 version, while pulling different parts from the original Victor Hugo novel), in which, among other ideas and changes, I intend to have both riddles in the show, have the reprise end on D, and work the narrative so that ALL the characters are seen with their flaws and values(like how in the novel, Frollo willingly adopted Quasimodo(who wasn’t his nephew) and named him ambiguously, and NOT cruelly, after either Low Sunday(which was when Quasi was found), also called Quasimodo Sunday, OR what the name means in English. Then, when we see how his position to be righteous and moral compass has been affected by his growing desire for Esmeralda, we suddenly start to watch the monster he ultimately develops into, for example), so that the riddles ring out (ba dum tssss) some sort of reasoning for this dark and ambiguous tale to be told.

    • @HeidiKohne
      @HeidiKohne 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      In classical music, a psychological notion of "affekt" was very much in play way back in the 1600s, primarily in Germany during the Age of Enlightenment. Affekt was where a specific emotion was tied to a key (eg C major, F# minor, G major, etc.). C major is one of the purest keys, as there are no black keys, and tuning systems that preceded today's equal temperament primarily started their tuning with C. D major is more regal (think Handel's Hallelujah Chorus) with E-fl major probably being the most regal of the keys. Some keyboards in the pre-Baroque and Baroque eras had split black keys, where E-fl and D# were actually two separate keys, tuned slightly differently to match the temperament the instrument was in; anything in C major totally avoids the hassle of determining if the front-half or the back-half of the key was to be played.

    something i think this piece does infinitely better than the film-besides fidelity to the source, give or take-is the nature of quasimodo’s acceptance. because the townspeople in the film are pretty shallow, they torment quasi during the feast of fools but then fight against esmeralda’s execution in the square, finally it is a child among them who sees quasi after his heroism and gives him a hug. it leaves the impression that quasimodo ‘earns’ his place among them through virtue despite his ugliness, and that never sat well with me.
    here, however, there’s less heroism involved on both counts. while yes, quasi foils esmeralda’s burning, its ultimately fruitless and afterwards, he himself throws frollo to his death-frollo who, by the by, is relatively sympathetic here compared to his animated counterpart. and the townsfolk of paris aren’t so noble either, indeed most of them attended esmeralda’s execution for their own prejudice or else entertainment, as the one prelude suggests. and here they’re confronted at the end, not with quasi’s victory, but his failure. his failure to save esmeralda and his failure to let love win out and spare his surrogate father. it is objectively a tragic ending, and their acceptance of him despite that feels more honest.
    here, they do not say, “you are beautiful, just like us”, instead they say, “we are ugly, just like you.” in my opinion, that distinction makes this show a worthy revision of the animated film’s perspective

    I love this musical! It is so good, I believe Quasimodo lives to become the priest, a.k.a. the archdeacon of the cathedral. Then he writes down his entire life story in an autobiographical novel explaining everything that happens in the musical. then before he dies, guess what he does? He writes something in the walls of the church... he writes FAIT in Greek! Then a year later, he dies. Fast forward to 1831 someone named Victor Hugo discovers this, takes note of this, and starts to write the novel. The novel gets published, becomes famous, gets adopted by mass media several times, Disney jumps onto the project turns the book into the movie that we know, several years later Disney turns it into The stage musical we know, then the history of the story will repeat itself again. So that is A brief evolution of the history of the Disney’s the huntchback of Notre dame full show yet, The first part of it is fictional, while the second half is factual. The half about Victor Hugo is all factual, the first part about Quasimodo living in the church is fictional. But I decided to interweave the stories and make it work. That way you get a combination of history both factual and fictional. I just decided to toy around with the idea that I came up with and I think it’s interesting. It’s interesting how a fictional character can possibly do something which can cause a bunch of factual things. From real life people and this is one of those super rare instances! And one that is not to be taken for granted but the facts and fiction works super well together to create a nice story. They both work harmoniously and create something that we will never ever forget.

      that sounds very tragic the ending! The ending is so sad! Quasimodo needs to live. I keep saying this in the comments but listen, if Esmeralda is to die Quasimodo needs to live. He needs to live to become the priest of Notre Dame and continue working for the church and go outside to visit people every day he can. That would be a better ending for him for him being the priest and living in the cathedral then dying in the cathedral! No more Quasimodo being killed off! I don’t like it. I don’t like him killed off he’s too sweet for that. I don’t wanna talk about him dying anymore he needs to live! He needs to live a nice happy life get over his grief find a new girl to fall in love with and live happily ever after. He cannot keep dying. I can’t bear it. He’s got to either get over his loss get over his grief and find a new girl or not find a girl and just live as the priest and write an autobiographical story of his life. That would be a better ending for Quasimodo he needs to live. If he doesn’t get over his grief soon enough, he at least should write his own story in the form of a novel a biographical novel which would be the entire story of his life. Then he goes out and tells it to the public! Then he’s telling his story. Kind of like how Hamilton the musical suggests, who is this, who dies, who tells your story? We tell the story. We live, we die, and we tell the story. Esmeralda dies, Quasimodo and the guard captain live, and Quasimodo tells the story of his life.

      +angeltheya12 This video was of the La Jolla production, the next production, Papermill, added lines to the ending, that specifically said 'he took her body to the graveyard & held it until he died, & years later their skeletons were found & when they tried to separate them, they crumbled to dust.' However the liner notes that were released with the cast recording said 'he took body out to the crowd below, where they showed they accepted him by pretending to be deformed themselves' Yet, the lyrics and actions remained unchanged in both versions, so both are correct interpretations of this ending, it would seem it can represent both.

    I like how it's sorta up to interpretation whether Quasimodo dies or is accepted cause a official soundtrack says he is accepted into society or in some plays he is moving on to the afterlife.. I prefer the society ending cause the play is already heartbreaking enough so Quasimodo deserves a happy ending at least so that's my canonical ending also what happens to Phoebus?

      This video is of the La Jolla Playhouse production from 2014. When the show moved to the Papermill Playhouse in 2015, a section was added before Clopin begins the reprise of The Bells of Notre Dame, where Quasimodo tells the audience what happened to his and Esmeralda's bodies, so unfortunately Quasimodo does actually die in the final version of the show. But in this production and in the cast album, I guess he's alright!

    So besides destroying the book and score. I loved the staging and set design of the show along with the imagery of Esmeralda ascending into heaven at the end. But the show WAS originally in ENGLISH to begin with! Why mess with something that was not broken?

      of the original production yes. This however... It's lacking the fire of the original staged score. especially during the finale ultimo. they cut out the reprise of out there and they used the wrong lyrics to someday for the reprise. also the scene for someday was too short. it missed the ensemble coming in and the modulation to where she is tied to the stake. also the alternate ending to Made of stone is interesting but the original was more chilling. and the reprise of Bells of Notre Dame should have been kept as the original with Clopin about to break down. Also I didnt like the Narration through out the show.
      Things i liked:
      They kept frollo's death the same
      They Omitted the Gargoyles and replaced them with the saints.
      some of the new orchestrations were brilliant! (reprise of Esmeralda with frollo)
      I suggest that you take a look at the original staged production for yourself.

      You can't compare it to the German production. This wasn't an adaptation of the original German show, it was a combination of adaptation of the book and Disney film. You can't compare them...

    • @JackDanyaKemplin
      @JackDanyaKemplin  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +4260laurel Actually they do. Disney owns the rights to any video or audio recording of their version of Hunchback. Since Papermill did not purchase the rights to have video recordings made of their production, that means that if any videos get out there, it is their job to remove them, otherwise they would get in trouble & so would anyone who posts the videos.

      +RFW Saints actually; Catholics do not believe we turn into angels when we die, we become saints. Angels are beings which were never human; virtuous humans who go to heaven are called saints. There are several deformed, crippled, & hunchbacked Catholic saints, & I believe the end reveals that those saints were the ones who were there for Quasi throughout his life. If you would like to read about interesting hunchbacked Catholic Saints, you should look up both Saint Germaine Cousin & Saint Margaret of Castello.

      He meets the saints, the ones that he always talked to while he's in the bell tower, and they revealed to Quasi that they're not as perfect as he think they are and they are just as deformed as Quasi.

      They're showing Quasimodo that even though even though they are perfect statues and saints, everyone has their own deformities and ugliness.

    • @JackDanyaKemplin
      @JackDanyaKemplin  9 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      +Mew Bank Because they (The Saints) were revealing that although as statues they seemed perfect & beautiful; that in life they had been as deformed as Quasi, & then you will notice that the deformities (smudges) on Quasi vanish to show that in death he is as beautiful as they are depicted in death.

      Jack Danya Kemplin another question why does he take off his costume onstage?

    • @JackDanyaKemplin
      @JackDanyaKemplin  9 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      It is showing that in the eyes of the Saints he is beautiful, & they are shown to have been crippled & ugly in life & that it was only in their saintly statue forms that they are beautiful, it relates to something he said in the song Made of Stone.
