- The Great Schism, also known as the Covenant Schism, or the Great Betrayal among the Sangheili, was a major civil conflict between the forces loyal to the Covenant against the Sangheili and their followers, which split apart on November 3, 2552. The Schism marked both the end of the Covenant and the partition of its client species for a thousand years.
Today, my fellow Covie fans, we'll be looking at the Covenant civil war that broke this once powerful alien empire. Enjoy!

The betrayal of the Elites is the absolute dumbest decision by the prophets.

Halo and Star Wars have a lot of similarities
What a bad comparison, considering this was different in every aspect with the only similarity being both conflicts had betrayal involved but everything else was completely different from one another.
Dude it boggles my mind how God damn lucky humanity was during the human covenant war, they just so happened to find the unyielding hierophant station, they just so happened to find out about halo and the prophets just so happened to make a bunch of stupid decisions at just the right time, the flood just happened to do many things which were beneficial in some way to humanity, and let's not forget how lord hood was prepared not to let anyone chase the covenant through the ark portal.
The fact that humanity won the war at all is nothing more than a complete fluke

For example since mercy was the oldest and was an experienced politician
He should have read the situation and truths intentions way better than he did especially since he knew him so well
And since odds are he would have had to restrain truth numerous times throughout the years
He would have clicked then developed countermeasures just in case.
He also would have definitely spotted a pattern around the time

Heck even if he didn't see for all those years the restraining of
Truth for regret would've been the wake up call.
How easily truth disregards one of the other phrophets at the slightest chance should have been a massive redpill for mercy.
@@aiden4917 Regret was literally the only smart prophet out of the 3 of them. He saw how much of a psychopath Truth was becoming.. Mercy was blind as hell it seemed to Truth. Once Regret died the covenant died in my opinion.
By the prohets what have these brutes done.

I see people saying how lucky Humanity was that the prophets betrayed the elites, but really it's the elites who are lucky that the prophets forced them to switch to the good side, even though there's little that's good about the elites. If they hadn't been betrayed, then they would have helped the prophets win the biggest Darwin award in the universe, and that would have been embarrassing.

if most of the grunts and hunters sided with the elites on high charity, why do they all fight with the brutes in halo 3 and later with the covenant in halo4/5
The covenant were still a functioning hierarchy even during the civil war, as many remained loyal to them simply due to obligation or survival.
Well you didn’t see to many hunters after Halo 2, a few on earth. And Grunts reproduce very fast so they have many of them, which is probably why they were used as canon fodder
Because they still fear the covenants power
The Grunts were most likely more of split faction. They didn't know which side to take and just ran to the side closest to them. As for the Hunters, it's most likely Truth had his trip to Earth prepared far ahead of time. It's most likely those Hunters weren't even aware that the Elites had been betrayed and by the time they arrived at Earth Truth already infected their minds that the Elites betrayed them.
I think the Great Schism mostly took place on High Charity. After High Charity got taken over, the remaining Hunters and Grunts wouldn't know the full story and would assume the Elites were the traitors. Kinda sad though, I would have liked to have seen grunts on the player's side.
Very good! I was always surprised that some of the other species joined the Sangheili during the Schism. After playing tons of HALO 3 I always thought most of the other groups joined the Brutes against Arby and Shipmaster.

Its actually not so much of surprise because any grunts who are under the elites command would follow them and as for the hunters they were strongly loyal to the elites that's why a majority if not almost all joined the elites reason why some hunters joined the brutes because of fear of their home world being glassed.
I could see the Grunts being divided, but I forgot about the Brutes' blackmail with the threat of glassing the homeworld! It makes more sense now.
Deka Tron Some Grunts have no loyalty, some mostly follow who ever leads them because they had no idea who to chose during the civil war.
As a Human I do realize that the reason why we were able to survive the Great War was because of Sangheili and their opposition to the Covenant after the Schism to the survival of my race. Thanks to their troops and naval tonnage we were both not wiped from existence by the Prophets or being consumed by the Flood. I may not like what many did to my species but I understand they honestly believed what they did was right and once they found out the truth they did was right and drove the enemies of both humanity and those who were betrayed by the Prophets. I can extend that thanks to them and take steps to heal the friction between our species to make a better galaxy free of outside oppressi in on.
There was honor in our covenant once, and there shall be again!

truth knew about the earth location but kept it secret but then regret learned of earth by himself and took a fleet there, truth wss pissed about this and left regret to die when the chief found regret in delta halo

Unironically I had a theory involving the inspiration behind the great schism, that involves Artriox. That Atriox and his clan rebelling against the covenant elites was the event that inspired the creation of the Great Schism. I even had the behind the scenes thought of that Tartarus having a strong hatred towards Atriox, saying that Atriox is a disgrace to the Jiranhanae Species. Even knowing that he can’t betray the Arbiter, considering him as an ally, but Tartarus goes through with it for the great good.

You didn't mention much of the stuff from broken circle, the prophet of clarity had quite a large part in the great schism. But other than that great video

sangheli are one of my favourite races overall because they look overall unhuman but exhibist some social structure etc

There isn’t a war between the Elites and Brutes. It’s a continuation of the Great Schism after the Covenant War, between Sangheili and Jiralhanae factions

Because currently there isn't much information about them for me to include them. As far as we know the Banished might not have even participate in the Schism.

The banished were not involved in the Great Schism. If they were the Brutes and Elites in the Banished would not be workign together.
