Great job. I'm 72 years old and my wife and I are not as agile as we used to be. I'm going to build the U shaped bed to hold two 28" cot sized mattresses with barely enough room between to stand up in to get up and around in the night. The space will be approximately 10 to 12 inches wide. The head of the bed, by the back doors, will have a 12" by 36" fill area. That will give a wider space for the top half of our bodies to stretch out and be perfect for sitting up and walking out of the bed area. I probably won't use a fixed, or movable table in the bed area. I love your modular set up. I will leave a toe kick area on the base of the bottom cabinets for walking in and out of the bed area. Kind of like the toe kick under kitchen cabinets. The front of each side cabinet could even be sloped wider at the floor. I'll figure all of that out when I get the plywood and tools out. Your video has been a great inspiration. Thanks.

Hi Lauren… I’m so glad I came across your channel….. just bought a 2023 Dodge Ram Promaster 2500 159 wb. As a builder of all things, including cabinets, I'm really enjoying your descriptive video's. I watch and have watched a good amount of video from van life builders and one thing I've seen time and time again and that is that even though I'm sure you'll never have an accident and spill on your cushions while drinking coffee in bed some morning, other people have. Really well thought out and built. Only change I might have made is the section for your sport equipment, with the rear of the box able to fold down or be removed so that that section could have been easily accessed from the rear of the van as well. But that might not be an issue for you.
@@LaurenLawliss I think what they're saying is, use the hole saw drill bit to make a round hole on each side of the oval template, then jigsaw out the center to make your oval cutout. Then smooth around the edges.
Lauren, I’m surprised I can give you any tips, but have you ever tried the bit device fore hinges, it’s a self centering bit, works awesome on hinges. I’m 64 and finally bought one a few years back.
Wow love your build. I am doing my 3rd build. I like the access to batteries and water. But I also like to have the stationary bed. But lagoon to put near the passenger seat once it is swiveled. Haven't really decided yet. Thank you for sharing.
The bed setup was one of the biggest and hardest decisions I had to make, but I’m happy with the convertible option for MY wants and needs. I also have a lagun table mount for my passenger swivel seat and love it.
Another great video. Things are moving along nicely and I've picked up a few more tips for my build ;) Have you given any thought to possibly a louvered vent for the shoe box area and possibly the other boxes to allow air circulation? Can't wait to see your electrical and plumbing build-outs.
Thank you. Great question! I am planning on adding vent openings on the back of the two side boxes. Still trying to determine my approach for the middle boxes. Electrical will be coming soon ;)
wow! what a great video! very nice job! this was very helpful. It is important to plan it out and take your time and your video shows that very well. I'm going to subscribe and watch your videos from the start of the build.
I've watched a few of your videos and agree with all the comments praising your teaching skills. Clear, concise and comprehensive. A+ And your craftsmanship. I have one question on this one- why did you make bottoms to the benches instead of just screwing into the sub floor? Also, do you have any squeeking and creaking now? Is there anything you could have done to eliminate them?
Thank you! Yes, in hindsight the bottoms are not necessary - this was the first time I ever built cabinetry and if I were to do the beds over again I would remove the bottoms. I have zero squeaking in my van!
If all goes according to plan I will get a 136 Promaster high top in spring of 2024. I am 99% sure I have decided on the u-shape bed as well except the portion along the back door I plan on making wide enough for a twin mattress. That way I have my lazy fixed bed for 99% of all days and the nook seats would only be big enough for one person each. I also plan on making one nook seat flip up to reveal the composting toilet and the other nook seat would have an opening to a litter box for my cat. Your design looks like it could get 5 people around the table where my design would accommodate only 3, but I get my always ready bed for always effortless naps.
You are doing a fantastic job of building the way you want it done and taking your time wish you a good year from an old guy in Minnesota winners coming but I still move around and do exercise anyway take care and good luck with all your endeavors 😇🌞☕🤗
Great video. You are excellent at explaining and demonstrating througout the entire video. Q: can you supply a link for the purchase of the water tank? Happy new year!
Great videos! Informative and well documented. Question on this video as to why you installed a bottom to your bed boxes vs anchoring to your subfloor?
I wonder for a bed if a high quality easy chair recliner could be used for a bed. There are those that plug in and can be heated or even have masage and the back and leg support move independently and stretch out to be flat or almost flat. I wonder if you ever say that or considered that. I doubt they are as flexible as the options you showed here, but I think they would be more comfortable and could even be removed and put into a tent, or under a folding cover. I cannot see how well they would fit in a van like yours or how flexible the space around it would be. But, it would probably require the least amount of work and you could also sell it if it didn't work.
Looking good! But why did you added bottoms to all boxes? Adds expense and weight. Some strips at both ends would have enough to keep it square and attach to subfloor if needed.
Thanks for the comment! I fastened the to the subfloor and furring strips with screws in multiple locations. Also the weight of the electrical and plumbing helps to hold it in place☺️
Like everyone else, I'm impressed with your skills, Lauren! One question (again, sorry): did you screw the side boxes to the low section furring strips? What did you do with the center and back boxes? are they attached to the floor? I'm not sure this would be my bed choice since the fixed one is quite simpler, but you keep inspiring me out of my comfort zone 👌
Thank you! So the original plan was to drill the boxes to the furring strips. So far I’ve only permanently install one box and I just screwed it down into my subfloor. I plan on doing that with the other three boxes too. Keep the questions coming, I’m happy to add my two sense. I know you can do this bed style if you choose, you got this!!🤩
Lauren, wouldn’t it have made sense to make your setup, but make it with the storage underneath? Then you’d have tons of storage and a natural place to also put bedding? Then the stuff you put under your bed maybe could be moved and better use of space? Just curious, not critical because you did as nice a build as I have ever seen. Very creative, talented, and well thought out, just curious if you would do it differently today?
Thanks the comment. I wanted everything in the van to be easily accessible from the inside so this was the perfect solution for my wants and needs. I’m very happy with it and wouldn’t change a thing 😁
Love your videos! I’ve been stuck on electric for months and so ended up just not working on my van at all out of frustration, and I finally feel motivated again because of how straightforward your explanations are! Curious if you think it’s necessary to have a bottom on the box? I’ve already installed my flooring so wondering if I can just leave the box without a bottom?
Thanks for your comment, Madeleine! I hear you. Sometimes taking a break from the build is necessary. It can be overwhelming and frustrating at times. Great question! No, I don’t think a bottom on my bed boxes were necessary. It’s fine with or without a bottom. I added a bottom because I knew I’d be moving the boxes around a lot before permanently installing them so the bottoms helped them stay in tacked. But if I did it over again knowing what I know now, I might skip the bottoms to save on weight and space. But totally up to personal preference. Good luck with the rest of your build! You got this!
@@LaurenLawliss That makes sense! I hadn’t thought about that - definitely easier to move them around when they have a bottom! Also curious for your thoughts on using 1/2” Sande ply? I’ve had a really hard time finding Baltic Birch. Unfortunately it’s only 3 layers, not 9 like yours, but wondering how crucial that is in your opinion?
Honestly, I LOVE baltic birch plywood. It has so many benefits and I really tried hard to find what I have. At the end of the day, other plywood will get the job done so it is up to personal preference. If you are near the Tampa, Florida or Utica, NY area let me know because I know two places that have some baltic birch.
Hey, where did you happen to find that TwoWanderingSoles van photo? It doesn't seem to be their personal van and I'm hoping to check out more photos of that build.
Lauren, I've watched this video I think 100 times as I'm getting ready to build mine. Did you screw your box to the furring strips? I was going to screw the wheel well sides directly to cross nuts I'm installing as I'm not using furring strips and was wondering if that would work.
Yes, I screwed the wheel wheel boxes to the furring strips and the subfloor. If you don’t have furring strips, I’d trust screwing the boxes to the subfloor and one another (the subfloor ain’t going anywhere). Hope this helps 😄
@@LaurenLawliss thanks! I've been overwhelmed trying to figure it out on my own. I'm grateful for your superb tutorials. I've watched all your videos over and over again and as I've mentioned before, you're an incredible teacher!

@@samson7770 Yes! When I originally built the bed area two years ago I wasn’t 100% sure but have narrowed down some ideas to just that. Appreciate the idea 😄
Thank you for your question! Personally, I didn’t want to deal with the hassle of setting up the portable system every time I needed to power something. Also, my electrical setup will be powering all my 12v DC and 120v AC appliances so through my calculations, I require a large amount of power for everything. The portable setups are great options for certain needs, but not for mine. Hope this helps!😊
@@LaurenLawliss Ok I understand, but I recently saw a video from a van builder that used her bluetti to power both DC (puck lights and fan) while simultaneously powering a/c appliances. She hooked up a fuse box to the bluetti for a/c appliances and d/c also and then she ran electrical wires into a outlet box to plug her a/c appliances into. There's two people that i've seen do it Jonnie's Journey and also DualEx. Check it out if you can. Great video by the way.

I know you can do this bed style if you choose, you got this!!🤩
Excellent! Thank you for your kindness and patience with me 🤲
Anytime🥰
Thanks Sweet Girl, this is great
Thanks for watching🤩
If you are near the Tampa, Florida or Utica, NY area let me know because I know two places that have some baltic birch.
if you ever quit the vanlife you could probably be a cabnet maker or carpenter, you have talent..
Hahaha I do love building cabinetry. So much fun🙌🏼
Great video. I’m curios - did you do a weight and balance calculation for your build? Disclaimer: I’m an airline pilot.
Thank you! I did weigh my van before the conversion and did consider the placement of everything for optimal balance. So yes😁
Hey, where did you happen to find that TwoWanderingSoles van photo? It doesn't seem to be their personal van and I'm hoping to check out more photos of that build.
Hey there! I went back and looked a little more closely. The owner of the van is actually @rydawell. Good luck!
@@LaurenLawliss Appreciate it. Thanks!
Anytime!
Bravooo!!!
Thank youuuuu
Lauren, I've watched this video I think 100 times as I'm getting ready to build mine. Did you screw your box to the furring strips? I was going to screw the wheel well sides directly to cross nuts I'm installing as I'm not using furring strips and was wondering if that would work.
Yes, I screwed the wheel wheel boxes to the furring strips and the subfloor. If you don’t have furring strips, I’d trust screwing the boxes to the subfloor and one another (the subfloor ain’t going anywhere). Hope this helps 😄
@@LaurenLawliss as you know this can be a daunting process so appreciate the guidance.
@@shelly2024blessings 100% - you got this! One step at a time 😁
@@LaurenLawliss thanks! I've been overwhelmed trying to figure it out on my own. I'm grateful for your superb tutorials. I've watched all your videos over and over again and as I've mentioned before, you're an incredible teacher!
I appreciate the kind words💖
Love your videos! What editing software do you use?
Thanks! I currently use iMovie.
Lauren, how has your van conversion worked out? I know, I need to search your videos and find out, lol
The van is 95% complete, just have some small finishing projects. Haven’t worked on the van in a year - just enjoying life and traveling. Check me out on Instagram @LaurenLawliss for van life updates!
You are a very pretty and handy girl
Thanks!
What about if one of the two side is a place put out side grill and prep area for food
I plan on having a fold down table to do such things 😄
@@LaurenLawliss ok but you ask what to do so I thought if our side you want to have a place to prep and cook to
@@samson7770 Yes! When I originally built the bed area two years ago I wasn’t 100% sure but have narrowed down some ideas to just that. Appreciate the idea 😄
@@LaurenLawliss sorry just to give idea like you ask did not mean to offend you
I am not offended - all friendly convo here 😁 thanks for the idea!

I'm curious, why not buy a portable power station like a bluetti for your electrical needs instead of battle born batteries?
I'll check them out. Thanks!
Lauren how many times have you messed up measurements 😮
I am human so I do make errors. But my attention to detail and ability to think things through has prevented me from making too many mistakes
Lauren, it appears that you and myself are very much alike 😆👍🥰🤗
Have you considered a ‘rock and roll’ bed?
I did not.
Having lived with it do you find the step annoying?
Not at all! I love the added storage and lift for my legs when I’m sitting on the couch.
@@LaurenLawliss great! Everything you did was so well thought out and providing the measurements was super useful! Thanks!
Glad to hear!
Nice build but u-shape is hardly original
I wasn’t going for originally, I was going for what worked best for my wants and needs - and I did throw my own twist on it compared to others 😄
I've watched a few of your build videos. They are very helpful and well done. Your craftsmanship is great.
On this one I'm wondering why you put bottoms on the cabinets instead of just screwing into the subfloor? Did you screw the boxes to the furring and the floor?
You will be pleasantly surprised how many ppl want you to build their RV.
I love it!!! When someone tells me they are thinking about it I tell them to do it!!!
Can you convert van to a rv and getting paid for it?
At this time I’m not looking for another project, sorry 🫶🏻
It must be a great feeling knowing that you can build and create your own projects without anyone's help!very satisfying!
100%!!!
