I spent over $200 on the 2024 YSL quads - are they worth it? | Review & Comparisons

- All four of the YSL Couture Mini Clutch Eyeshadow quads have now landed and I've tried them all: 700 Over Noir, 710 Over Brun, 800 Over Dore, and 810 Over Orange. Here's the review - with swatches, comparisons, application footage, and various looks, as well as a discussion of formulations and quality.
Can any of them beat the originals? Who could put these to good use? And who can pass on these? Are they worth it? I'll try to answer all of these questions in today's video.

I have friends who color their hair. I asked the cost nowadays. I almost fainted. The girls were so casual about it 😮 I guess guys have no clue.
That's why I only go once or twice a year - even a good hair cut is really expensive for those of us with longer hair.

Thank you for yet again being the lone bright spot in my terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day. Your happy enthusiasm for shiny dirt is a much needed salve.
I do like the bit of brightness that the coral color brings. There's a tease of the color when your eyes are open and it pops when you blink. There's also a nice warmth to it and it really defines the shape of the outer corners of your eyes.
It's interesting to see all the quads laid out together. Not only is my brain trying to study them across quad to quad, but also individual shadows from just about each one stand out as a kind of hopscotchy thing.
Your eyes really do pop as this pale, icy blue with coral color shadow. I heard a thing about the color wheel once and how oranges and blues play really well together.
Since I finally am remembering, I'll ask. I have a vague understanding of how using your channel's funds doesn't violate your no buy, but what do you do with the makeup you've bought purely to review? does it gt put in the curation process you're currently in or is it separate and dealt with differently if it's not something you are going to use?
What a great analogy - comparing the individual shadows really does feel like playing hopscotch in a way!
Yes, opposite colors on the color wheel often make each other "pop" when they're placed next to each other. Since I have equal amounts of green and blue in my eyes, I can change them to blue when I wear orange, and green when I wear purple. It's like my own personal magic trick. 😂
Since my initial no-buy year ended, I am now allowed to buy whatever I want, whenever I want, as long as I can afford it (meaning no "buy now pay later" and no paying in installments). But I am trying to limit my buying to only what I think I'll genuinely get a lot of use and joy out of.
When I use my channel's budget to buy things, I choose items for which I think a review from me can add something helpful to the conversation. For example: since my friend gave me the original six quads and I can offer comparisons from the whole line, I felt like my take could genuinely add value to the conversation. So out of all the makeup that interests me right now (and trust me, there's a LOT of it), I picked these quads.
As for what I will do with it: I have decided that, if it's not a favorite of mine that I want to add to my collection, one of two things will happen to it. That item will either be given away to someone who will enjoy it, or - if I have a feeling it would be good for my channel to use that product as a reference in future reviews - it will be stored separately in my newly designated "reference box". I'll be using the container concept here, too. So if the reference box gets too full, it will get decluttered and only the most useful reference materials will be kept. That way they won't clutter up my carefully curated makeup collection, but they are still easily accessible for review purposes.
I had to save up for months before I could afford the five things I've purchased so far, so I have a feeling I won't be buying all that many things each year (at least not compared to most beauty channels). But I knew I would be on the road this summer and thought it would be good to use my budget while I had a little more time on my hands.

Thank you for such a detailed and thorough response to my question. It's something I've been wondering for a while, but it always rolled away from my main line of thought when I'm commenting.
That you have a reference box and you're trying to curate it under the same rules as your general collection makes a lot of sense. I get the feeling that there are probably other reviewers out there that are either in debt up to their eyeballs or they have the comedy closet where any time they open it, they get buried under an avalanche of makeup.

This is my superbowl! I’ve been waiting for this!!! I’ve watched your video on the initial YSL quad release probably 10 times over the months as I’ve been deciding on whether or not to add a quad to my cart! It is the most informative and helpful video!!

Thank you, Thorbjorg! If you like 100 but would like something a little more dramatic, a little warmer, and a little more chocolatey, I think you might enjoy 710 as well. The orange quad really surprised me. I can't believe it's my second favorite out of the new palettes!

I already caved and bought the orange. And I love it, it is my perfect summer palette. I have others that also include some kind of coral but the ysl one is the only one where all of the colours are perfect for me. If I wouldn’t already have too many neutrals I might have been tempted to buy others. Not that I really needed the orange but I’m super happy and will take it to holidays. Even thinking about bringing nothing else 😅 Gold etc is more my autumn colour..

It’s the superior mattes in these quads for me, too. They are so special. I frequently reach in the quads just to use the mattes! (I did that yesterday to grab the orange in 810 yesterday for a pop of coral)
I’m very tempted by the 710…but I will wait for a sale if I get it. I think 700 isn’t for me. It’s too cool and smoky. I have Guerlain Imperial moon which is close enough for me. I probably didn’t need 800 because I also have ND Golden, but I love it and I’ll get good use out of it. Of the new ones 810 is my favorite!
I just saw that you answered the question in my previous reply already. 810 is surprisingly pretty! I was really surprised at how much I like it. I think it's my second-favorite out of this new batch. And aren't the mattes just so special? They really make it fun to apply makeup.
There are also days where I find myself reaching for 800 over the Golden palette - usually when I don't have as much time. And I, too, have found myself reaching into the 810 palette just for that pop of orange! How fun! It's always lovely to hear from you, Lisa!

Also, is it just me or is the darker brown shade in 710 is actually darker than the similar shade in 100? 🤔

And you're right: the darker brown in 710 is darker than the similar shade in 100. The whole palette is darker and a little warmer.

I can’t wait to get 710. I love YSL mattes too. I have 400 Babylon roses and I love the palette but it’s not for daily use for me at least.710 is the perfect palette for me.

Thanks for another enjoyable and informative video! I wonder how the dark mattes blend on the eyes and how they wear. So many dark matte eyeshadows either wear off or do not blend well and end up patchy. Would it be possible to compare high-end mattes in terms of wear?
Thanks for taking a moment to say hello! There is some footage of me applying the "patchy" eyeshadow in my review of 700 and 800 palettes (th-cam.com/video/c0rLGzmdrV4/w-d-xo.html ), where you can see that they take some blending, but ultimately turn out just fine. As for the wear time, I do find that ALL of these shadows do fade slightly throughout the day, but they fade evenly and not too dramatically (I go into more depth on the wear time in this video: th-cam.com/video/-BBRMt5U-fA/w-d-xo.html .
I always have to use a primer with any eyeshadow due to my eyeshape and oily eyelids, but I would say that these hold up very well, especially the mattes. My most reliable shadows to date have been from Viseart - especially the matte shadows.
