I feel like WW1 is grossly overshadowed by the sequel. It's good to see there are those who are trying to bring it back into focus. There are stories, and lessons, there not to be forgotten.
It is, I remember like 15 to 20ish years back you'd still see WW2 on the media and video games and movies everywhere in comparison to WW1. It was talked so much it actually became kinda boring. I had to find a book to find something to learn about the WW1 other than the basics. It wasn't until relatively lately that WW1 was getting some attention. WW1 was the deep wound that festered and later created the largest and most destructive conflict humanity has ever known and influenced everything we are today. @@pitioti The thing is you cant punish an entire nation and expect them to bow down. The harder you punish a nation, the harder it will retaliate. Best example is how Germany invaded the USSR in 1941 with the intend to wipe them off the map and exterminate them. The Soviets suffered the most horrific defeats in military history, yet they never gave up and ended up victorious. If the Germans were more humble, they could have sued for peace with the Soviets and won great influence over Eastern Europe, but they wanted total victory, but got total defeat instead.
in fairness to those who said that at the time, they weren't even remotely able to foresee the sheer horror that Hitler and the Nazi regime would unleash on Europe or the lengths the Axis powers would go to.

Frostyman254 2 it would have happened anyway the French general said after world war 1 that the treaty was a armistice for 20 years and the war would continue because of the German people being forced to pay every country back that participated compensation for the war on top of covering there own losses so 20 years later Hitler blamed the Jews for the loss of World War One and then started world war 2
Calibet Zeal But that part of the treaty wouldn’t exist though. The war was at a complete standstill, roll the dice and you had a 50/50 chance of either side winning. America joined the Entente and tipped the scales hard, if America joined the Central Powers? I honestly doubt that America would be interested in allowing that to happen, same for Germany, they were tired of carrying the Central Powers, Austria-Hungary maybe but I doubt the Ottomans would want anything like that in the treaty either considering they had their asses handed to them hard by the Russians and British. Bulgaria probably but they just want to be bigger. Basically not happening in that alternate universe. Basically in a Central Power victory, at a treaty where the terms are essentially dictated America and Germany, the others are forced to shut up and go along with not making the Entente starve. Edit: Really pushing your bullshit eh, me from a year ago. Holy shit if only you realized how much of a dumbass you were.
Passchendaele, 2nd Nov 1917 A man stood in his trench, knee deep in mud thickened by the earth shattering anger of the artillery trying to dig him out. He looks around him at the men he fought alongside each day. Each of them had the face of death, their spirits having been broken months ago. The shadows and mud covering their faces gave them the appearances of the very same corpses they fought over each time a charge was ordered. He checked his rifle, making sure it was fit to tear another man's life from his body, and his bayonet, still bloodied from the last man its razor edge had sliced through like paper. He gazes over the trench edge, tempting the ever present gaze of a sniper to see what yet awaited him. His eye was met with hell on earth. decomposed body's half swallowed back into the earth, still lying the way they fell. Barbed wire with its thousands of metal teeth suspending the body's of all. A singular tree, its bark burnt and its roots bloodied. And clouds of gas smothering and choking the very heavens themselves, before settling in the craters born of the pounding artillery. He wondered were the bodies of his friends, his brothers in arms, laid. He wondered what fate had awaited them when they had breathed their last breath. But he held no resentment for the men who had fought them back, no. He held resentment for the generals who had hidden in their bunkers and marched them to their deaths. The shrill sound of impending doom cut through the silence and the living corpses around him gathered at the trench edge. A captain marched down, forgoing the rousing speech, knowing his men no longer even heard his words, let alone cared for them. He thought once more of his fallen brothers, and his family back home. And finally the order was given and the mad scramble over the edge began. Immediately he heard the bloodthirsty chatter of the enemies weapons bearing down on them, more men falling into the mud around him. And once more, he marched into the gaping maw of death, with his rifle in his hands and an order to fulfil
@jerryhayden01 Citizen of the Fatherland I honestly believe that such a war happening again is almost impossible, but on the chance that it did, that would be nothing that men could do but their duty.

Then Germany attacked Austria and Hungary forcing Italy to join the axis(I think) then Japan joined the axis as well. Japan attacked Pearl Harbour. Forcing USA to join the war. As the great naval war is ongoing. Germany attacked Russia. Then Germany launched an attack on Moscow “Operation Barbarossa” then the bombing raids were so brutal it wiped out luftwaffe. Then The Wehrmacht was also wiped out by tanks and infantry. The great Bismarck has fallen then France and the others launched an attack to Germany. USA launched Operation Overlord. About the Naval war: Japan wanted to attack Midway. So they sent 4 carriers and 3 destroyers and 1 Battleship and 2 cruisers to destroy midway. But USA did not accept it. Akagi Kaga and Suryu I think was destroyed. Leaving only Hiryu to destroy Midway, Hiryu launched 14 dive bombers to destroy Midway, Wildcats and Buffalos were sent to destroy, and 1 Zero was destroyed. No bomber casualties. And then it was USAs turn to launch carriers, 3 were sent. Enterprise or Lexington was destroyed but luckily it got repaired, after that Enterprise or Lexington was sent again. Japanese Admiral Yamamoto ordered Hiryu to destroy it with 6 dive bombers. 4 wildcats were sent. Then US dive bombers were sent. Hiryu destroyed.

11 November, year 1918. 106 years ago. The Great War, the war to end all wars, has over. Rest in Peace everybody, who died in this Great War. The great war, where millions has died. War, that changed the whole history. War, that never ended all wars.

"Which hand, trying to put us in chains like these, would not wither? The treaty is unacceptable." - Phillip Scheidemann 12 May 1919 after the Treaty of Versailles was signed. "This is not peace. It is an armistice for twenty years." - Ferdinand Foch (French General) 28 June 1919 on the Treaty of Versailles
Everytime I hear this song I get goosebumps - So much power, so much energy - about a very dark part of our history. Something that never should be forgotten.
I know this will get buried, but here my take on why this song message is tragic. Pay attention on how at the beginning the "soldier" who's point ov view we see blames others, the higher ups, the politicians etc. not directly but the message is clear. Then we have the mourning part, soldier is trying to understand and comprehend the whole situation. But he cant. When Captain orders the charge, he "snaps", narration changes. There is duty, worthy sacrifice and serving the country, heroes rise. There is no more thinking of the purpose of war, there is just war as it is. When he said at the beginning that the promised glory was a lie, there is no more of that. He fell in line like everyone else, he fell to the "Glory" narration indicated by "heroes rise". And the most tragic part is, that "soldier" says that we will "write our own history". But he doesn't know yet that he and most of his generation are turning, or already turned into the same people that "lied" to them at the beginning. War to end all war, no encore. But, they will do the same. for their children, sooner or later. Maybe he doesnt know that, but because of what happened during the Great War and its aftermath, the pieces are already in place for the next round. And his generation will be blamed the same as the generation he is blaming in the beginning. Remember that Hitler didnt came out of nowhere. He was the same man, from same generation, as our soldier who sings. And THATS tragic.
My respect for Sabaton just grows and grows. They're making people who may not have heard of these battles/wars/people/vessels/etc and really making the history live again. I agree with so many people I've heard; WW2 was a war that had to be fought, the Nazis were an existential threat to the rest of the world and although millions died their atrocities are all that lives on. WW1 was a pointless war, initiated by the growing pains of globalism and just the result of utter incompetence, corruption and greed on all sides. The young men on all sides and the civilians who lived and died around them deserve to be remembered and their stories deserve to be told. If any of the guys from Sabaton are reading this: Thank you. You're doing a great service to humanity and making hstory RTFO. Eternal respect 👍🏻
When I first heard this song, it immediately brought to mind my great-great-grandfather, who went missing in Galicia in 1914 after being drafted into the Austro-Hungarian army. We never learned his fate, but the line “nameless marks his grave” brought tears to my eyes. It is overwhelming every time I hear it.
And feet by feet We pay the price of a mile here Though men are falling, we see Heroes rise We face the heat As we are fighting until the dawn So follow me and we will write our own history This is one of the greatest things ever spoken
Honestly I think the lyrics of this song can apply to any war if you interpret them hard enough. When you think about it what soldiers were sold in WW1 is what soldiers are being sold in practically every war.
You know what i love about Sabaton? It's the mix of feelings. When you first hear their songs it's epic, makes you feela pumped up. Then you listen to that exact aong couple of more times and catch general idea of lyrica, which makes you kinda sad. Then Sabaton History channel releases video about history behind that song, which ultimately makes you cry every time you hear it.
I think this song so perfectly connects with World War 1. The song seems to ooze grandness, probably due to the choir and, as usual, amazing guitar work and the work of whatever instrument is used at 3:40-3:42. I don't believe there can be any better song that can be made about World War 1.
I have never read the captions at the end of the song. Reading them now I am in tears. I had no connection to any of them I had no idea who they are, I wasn't born until way way later and still their sacrifice brings tears to my eyes. The great war was a tragedy. Rest in peace all those who died. And all those people who were never found.

As the darkness falls, and Arabia calls,
As you kill, fight, and die, because thats what a soldier should do
As the dead men are marching again,
As soldiers are lost forever inside of this grand endeavor

Death is hard to ignore
And you may ask
Is this a worthy sacrifice?

He was right for the wrong reasons. The very reparations he thought were too soft were impetus for WW2.

World War One: *named the Great War and the War To End All Wars due to its huge death toll and destruction*
World War Two: I’m about to end this man’s whole career.
no im about to shove this war to end all wars up his arse *quote by ww2*
It’s crazy to think about the fact that WWII wouldn’t have happened if America joined the Central Powers. Honestly that’s probably what should’ve happened.
Edit: It’s been a year, please don’t listen to the bullshit I spewed a year ago, I was stupid and decided theories were fact, they aren’t.
World War Three: hold my nuclear button
Passchendaele, 2nd Nov 1917
A man stood in his trench, knee deep in mud thickened by the earth shattering anger of the artillery trying to dig him out.
World war one was the end of an era, brought about in the most brutal and bloody fashion imaginable. World war two was the new era coming in swinging.
@jerryhayden01 Citizen of the Fatherland I honestly believe that such a war happening again is almost impossible, but on the chance that it did, that would be nothing that men could do but their duty.
This deserves more attention. Very well written my friend.

Ww2 started. Because of the German army taking over Poland. A country France and Britain promised to help if attacked. Dday effectively wiping out Nazi germany
About the Naval war:
Japan wanted to attack Midway.

Grande gruppo con grande canzone.........MENO MALE CHE C'È ANCORA QUALCUNO CHE LI RICORDA......QUESTE CANZONI GRAZIE A LORO VIVRANNO IN ETERNO 😊😊😊😊😊

Just because they sing about war doesnt mean they glorify it
This is my first time hearing of this band! holy cow what a good find! this song is epic!🤘
Thanks a lot! We hope we can count on you in our army from now on 😉
It was called The Great War because of the scale, kinda like the Great Wall of China, and other names for WWII are The Second Great War (UK) and Great Patriotic War (USSR/Soviet Union/CCCP, three names for one country) and yeah I know this song is about WWI, I just figured those that are curious might want to know how it got that nickname
I love how their singing not about greatness but about sacrifices and how the soldiers were terrified and about heroes of ww1
This was my first song I heard of you guys my brother was trying to get me to listen to you guys when my brother said its a history band I really didn’t take him seriously but now I’m glad I did and I got to see you guys in phoenix’s thank you sabaton and keep up the good work
We're glad you did too ;)
Thanks a lot for coming!
the song sounds so grand and epic, then you hear the reality of the hell and the facade of greatness falls apart. incredible how well they nailed the truth of war
This song has the best bridge in Sabaton’s discography
When I saw you guys in Sofia (some 7-8 years ago) I thought you are the best. And when someone/something is the best, can't get better, right? Right???? This new album is totally smashing it.. thank you.
Thanks a lot for being there
Seen them live yesterday at Lisbon in another great performance and now I can't hear their songs without tank and gun shots accompanying
It surely adds to the experience! Thanks for coming
i listen sabaton from when they started, there where ups and downs in theit music, but this song is in my honest opinions their magnum opus, sounds like sabaton, epic and great, and lyrics, to a history buff like me, carry so much emotion, this is top shelf metal, lesson in history and manhood
This is truly one of my most favorite songs from Sabaton. It’s very hard to choose a favorite as they are all amazing but this one is certainly high up my list
Well said. And I agree 100%
"For about 20 years"
*German revolution*
*Polish-bolshevik war*
*Hungarian revolution*
*And others before 1925*
There was also the italian facsit take-over... yeah, lots of shit happend.... (I know it did about nothing in the grand sceme of thing, but at the time, everyone feard mosalini....)
Hey don't forget about the baltics
The opening verse of Great War is far and away my favorite one from any Sabaton song. The ominous music in the background, the haunting lyrics, and Joakim's iconic voice really do create an eerie horror and dread that makes you realize just how awful WW1 truly was for the common soldier.
My great grandfather who was irish fought in the british army at the age of 16, He wasnt to bad, but not that good, He did win a few medals and he fought in the frontlines, he was behind enemy lines for a few months having to live off of rotten potatoes, But soon germany would surrender and go on to meet my great grandmother. 🇮🇪 🇬🇧
He fought in this war so i didnt have to fight any wars, Because they said it was "The War To End All Wars"
He was lied to.
F for your great grandfather
"having to live off of rotten potatoes" "Irish" Your great grandfather was made for this!
Great War, Great Tour, Great Score, Great Song, Great Band
A lot of people think that for a song to be good it has to rhyme, no, it just has to sound badass.
36th ulster volunteer regiment where all of the males of my dads side joined 4 brothers 2 cousins only 1 of them came home from the war. We will never forget them or the price they payed for a worthless war. They were the bravest men alive
Last time I was this early, the great War was still raging on
I like the text shattering, and the backing vocals. It really reflects the fracturing and haunting nature of war...
Как же я обожаю sabaton
Thousands of feet march to the beat
It's an army on the march
Long way, from home
Paying the price in young men's lives
Thousands of feet march to the beat
It's an army in despair
Knee-deep in mud
Stuck in a trench with no way out
No this is great war
No this is great war
My respect 🫡 to all army’s
no nation, no philosophy, no ideology... soldiers without borders...
Listening to this on the edge of WWIII gives you a completely different vibe
