AmyOverby you have to think deeper than just having sympathy. If they become government funded, every blind person will want one, and it needs replaced several times over a lifetime, and next thing you know, we will be funding dogs for people with anxiety and any ailment at all. That would be a ton of money. Let’s make sure all the HUMANS are fed and housed before providing dogs to the disabled.

@@jasmineleopard7593 I see the anxiety example and such but I think there could be a perftly clear "law" to make that just Guide dogs are funded. (Guidedogs are for the blind, all the other disabilities have a servicedog, sorry for overexplaining if you knew this!) But like blind people actually can do so much more with a guidedog then they can with a cane. I think all other disabilities CAN have some use out of a dog but also have a lot of other options to get the same result (the same level of comfort) as they would with a dog. So a dog might not be that nesacerry while with a blind person it really is. So it wouldn't be like 'everyone would want one' because everyone blind that wants one is already having one. Because it is funded you might have to wait but you can always get one; because these organasations are only profiding guidedogs (so for the blind only). The goverment can do the same thing. Yes ofcourse if the goverment would start funding guide AND survice dogs they'd be out of money in no time because everyone with even a little anxiety will get a dog. Not saying people with anxiety don't deserve help!! I have it in a mild form myself and I am sure it will be a lifesafer for some who really can't leave the house , are even inside freaking out, and have tried all other available options and treatments. But the goverment does not have to fund ALL dogs. Just guide dogs. Because there is no treatment for blindness! And there is for anxiety, and there are medications for epilectic etc. So no it's not normale for a goverment to not fund this

Nobody is stopping you. We don’t need the govt reaching in our pockets for every single thing that could possibly make the world better

@@squidneytp They are because they aren't technically necessary, as horrible as that sounds. People can use canes and many have family and friends to help them. However they lose their Independence at that point. Which is why its not funded. independence < money

Gallup was trained in Quebec, which is in Canada, and is a French speaking province :) the Mira foundation is primarily French speaking but help french and English speaking clients:)

Molly, I was looking after a just 4 year old (*edit*) this afternoon. He wanted to look at dogs on the internet, so I asked him if he knew that some dogs help people, for example blind people have guide dogs. I thought it would be a 30 second conversation but it's never too young to start teaching children about guide dogs and other service dogs. I mentioned that I watch a girl on the internet that has a guide dog and he asked to see your video. I played this one, thinking he'd watch for a minute and then be bored of watching an adult sit on her bed and talk, but he kept wanting to watch until the end. And then when you said "if you found this interesting, give it a thumbs up" he put his thumb up!!!! So many kids don't do what someone in a video is asking even if it's really child oriented unless an adult is encouraging them to irl (eg kids dancing videos), he was paying so much attention to everything you said! It was the cutest!

"why do guide dogs look so sad" ughhhh. This question drives me nuts. I had a service dog for PTSD for about 8 years and got this question all the time. My SD would get so excited to see his vest come out as well. If a service dog doesn't want to do it's job...they won't. Service dogs certainly do have a bit of a RBF though when they're on duty haha!

Whenever I hear the misconception that they are sad I just think honestly, service dogs are wonderful, but they are a lot like toddlers. They love doing things we would find boring, they need clear and simple instructions, and have you ever tried to make a toddler do something they don't wanna do? It is impossible.
If you're comfortable talking about it, can you explain how a service dog works for someone like you? Are they for 'comfort'?

PTSD Service Dogs can:
-help adjust serotonin levels
-help lower blood pressure
-help with episodes of depression
-provide companionship
-calm their handler
-preventing people from crowding around or rushing up on their handler
Emphasis on that last one. Crowds of people and PTSD are a bad combo.
Service dogs don't even need to be large dogs! I have MS and I registered my larger pomeranian as a service dog because people watch out about stepping on him, more than they ever did for me. He gives me a reason to ask people not to crowd me "because of my service dog" instead of saying "because I have MS and I have double vision and I need to balance myself and I might fall and seriously injure myself if I'm distracted while trying to walk and the left side of my body is so numb that I cant feel the foot I'm walking with".
Hurts my heart to see Molly call any service dog "fake". You never know what that owner is going through and unless the dog is tearing the place apart, they arent hurting anyone. :(
@@xcarleyquinn She is just saying some of the family dog owner bought the service dog vest online and take advantage, so that they can bring them along to most of the place.

@@andyfong940908 I know, I know.. but when she talks about it like this someone who is ignorant about the topic who watches this video but hasnt seen her other videos might take it as permission from a famous blind person to be unkind to people who have invisible disabilities assuming that we are all faking it.
Maybe if someone thinks they need their dog with them to the point where they are going online and buying vests or getting their dogs registered, they might need the dog with them for whatever reason. Its nobody's business unless the dog starts to misbehave :(

S Kani your dog most definitely also has an built in google maps 😉 most if not all dogs have it but they just don’t use it as often or they can’t easily communicate it to you...
we used to have a dog and whenever we were on a walk and he got loose of his leash, he disappeared and we wouldn’t see him anymore during the walk but every time after the walk he would be waiting for us next to our car (or before our gate of we just walked the neighborhood). Even when we went for a walk somewhere where our dog had never been before and in the middle of the walk he got loose from his leash he would be waiting for us by the car...

My guide dog is very often touched especially when I am in a busy place. And that’s when I need her the most. Please stop just touching dogs with out asking. I need her to help me keep me safe. When she isn’t working she truly does get cuddles and love I don’t treat her awfully.

My guide dog speaks french too. Most of his common commands are in french, the rest english. This way people can't so easily distract him by trying to test his skills by shouting commands at him. He does an awesome job ignoring them. So annoying when people interrupt our focus. They really don't get how bad that is to distract a guide dog when working. Using a different language when is a great deterrent. Took me a bit to get use to using it. Comes naturally to me now. Wouldn't have it any other way. . . Who knew going blind would make me bilingual. . .
I never saw someone distract a guide or service dog in Quebec. Mira is very renowned here and the population including children is very aware that they need not to disturb the dogs that are working or puppies in training. Bonne chance et bonne journée!

I shared this video because my dad is legally blind and even our family doesn't know how to respect his guide dog. My aunt tries to sneak food to his dog because she "feels bad for it." And my dad won't speak up, though he should. You explained everything he goes through on a regular basis so well! So I'm tagging my family in this share. A blind family friend of mine got her first guide dog 5 years ago at the age of approximately 60 years old. Last year they were out going grocery shopping or what ever, and her pup just stopped and wouldn't move forward. Bobi, my family friend, was getting really upset at her guide dog until a stranger went up to her and let her know there was an open gutter thing in front of her! He ended up having to guid her backwards and out of that area! And her guide dog saved her from a very dangerous situation! So the dog didn't know they weren't allowed to walk in between the sidewalk blockers things, but she was so smart in not just hoping over the hole and letting bobi just fall into it!! I love guide dogs.

Google maps having vocal directions must have been a total game changer in terms of independence for blind people. Less memorization, easier time finding new areas, less dependance on others... That must be huge

PGamero, yes and no. Education cost around the same amount anywhere in the developed countries. In the United States, each student must pay up front the whole amount. Elsewhere, we pay a little bit each year by the taxes, and we pay more as we make more money.
For guide dogs, the foundations that train them are paid by the donations from generous people. In Canada and the United States, the end-user pays nothing.

As a user of a Medical Alert/Response/PTSD Service Dog (forms of service dogs), especially in the state of California, to be exact SoCal. Los Angles, San Diego County, the rate of fake service animals are CRAZYYY! Especially since I do have a smaller dog, since I don't need mobility and for other reasons relating to my multiple disabilities, people automatically assume, small dogs can't do the job. You'd be surprised, they can... and some companies train them! So all I can say is please remember, never just assume a service animal is fake cause it is small. Good behavior can't be faked! You can definitely tell whos legit, and who isn't though. So I do definitely relate to Molly in certain ways with fakes, being located in SoCal, it gets bad, people really don't know a lot about service dogs and the rights service dog handlers have and even the rights businesses have, We may have different disabilities, but there definitely is something that is just comforting know that even though someone may not have the same disability as you, you just don't feel alone
That's sad people buy fake service vests for their pets. Not only does it make harder for people who need service animals, but what if the fake service dog does something bad or harmful?

In the U.K most if not all guide dogs have special hi vis harnesses that states it's a guide dog and not to touch or distract and with it being a hi visibility reflective harness it makes it's safer for both dog and owner :) and normally in a busy town centre people will move away to let the guide dog and person past or guide them across roads 🙂 but that's just what I've seen

My partner and I were really confused because we swore we’d seen then in England with different colour vests depending on what they were doing, we said if we saw a dog with just a harness we’d have no idea as harnesses like what she is using are getting more popular with unruly dogs
There are also dogs for the deaf, but they are more social and rare, they focus on aspects of daily life like the washing machine, fire alarm, etc. You can pet them so long as the owner agrees and they are considered general service dogs (I think they wear red vests with their job on them when out and about).
Yes in the U.K. Guide dog harnesses are always white, with a reflective strip. Before hi viz was a thing they were always just white. Other service dogs have different colour vests or harnesses, and it is most common in the uk for other types of service dogs to have red vests.

I would love to see a video about how you cross streets and all of that! It would be great to see it with a cane and with a guide dog, so we can see how different people in different circumstances deal. Also, in the UK all guide dogs are free, you can keep them afterwards and we have two charities for guide dogs.

gemma Hutchinson guide dogs aren’t completely free in the uk! When I applied I was told the cost of the dog at all is 50p for the harness and once the dogs retired you get it back from them. It’s not much but it’s a cool piece of information to know 😂

Listening to you made me wonder - have you ever had any issues with cyclists when you were crossing the street. The reason I ask is that cyclists don't make any/much noise. So presumably it's up to them to pay attention if they see a blind person waiting to cross/crossing. And I'm guessing if Gallop sees a cyclist coming at you, he'll do that obedient disobedience that you were talking about. But I just wondered if this is an issue?
Ive also wondered about this. Maybe adding more comments may get it seen and answered in a future video. Very good question. 👍

So many ppl have been trashing "fake service dogs" that now every time I take my dog out to train her...I get so much disrespect that I have quit working her as often because I can only take so much disrespect from ppl before it just isn't worth dealing with the disrespect. Please be sure to mention that it is totally legal to train your own dog.
I really admire the bond and the communication effort required by both parties for guide dog/owner relationships! It seems like a lot of work, but at the same time it's increasing your bond and sense of communication, and ultimately benefiting both of your lives in a big way. It's such a unique and special thing, and I'm glad you could share a taste of it with us, especially people like myself who are generally uneducated in this area!

4:15 also important point to make, by ADA law, _service dogs of any kind _*_are not_*_ required to wear any sort of identification saying they are service dogs._
The only thing a store owner can ask regarding a service/guide dog is 1) Is that a service animal? and 2) What service does it provide? They cannot kick you out/deny you service for having a service animal. The only reason they _could_ kick you out is if the animal is causing significant disturbance (ie barking, running around, being unruly). Which, if it's truly a guide/service dog then they wouldn't be doing any of that anyways.

Taylor Britt yes, definitely :)) I don’t personally have one but was offered a psychiatric service dog. when I asked I was told they were never required to wear anything at all, which is cool. but I understand why people prefer to put things on because rude places sometimes won’t even believe it’s a service dog :/

However, churches/religious places of worship can sometimes ask you to leave, though most wont ever do that :)

Well, they are trained to obey directions, stopping if they seem to be dangerous. and to navigate around obstacles. They would do the same for a seeing person. So do they know their owner is blind? That's actually a decent question. I think they would know there's something not quite right with them, But knowing that they're blind... It's tough to say. They are doing only what they are trained to do. I don't think they would teach the dog about what kind of people they will be working with. Only how to work with them. So I would say no, they probably don't know they are blind.
I could also be very wrong. I didn't look it up or anything, I basically just rambled until i got some sort of conclusion. XD
I can't say if they know, I don't have a service dog myself but I am visually impaired. I will eventually lose my sight too but for now I do have some vision.
Anyway, I use to have a dog who I fully believe knew I couldn't see well. When we walked up or down stairs she would walk with me and I would have my hand on her back, if I didn't have my hand on her she would just watch me the whole time we walked up or down the stairs. And any time she came into the room I was in she would make a little huff sort of noise. She would also always pull me to the side of parking lots if I were to try and walk down one. She didn't do any of this with anyone else so I fully believe she knew.
No. Dogs can no understand the concept of other people having 1. Different information and 2. Other people experience other things

When I went to meet my boyfriends dad I had my service dog with me. (he’s for my blood sugar and seizures) and his dad said (jokingly) oh so you’re blind now? And it really bothered me. Older people aren’t as educated or accepting with guide dogs and or service dogs. I see so many fake service dogs with IDs. (There’s no registration for service dogs) ugh. It’s just one of my pet peeves

Låni Påni, well when there’s a chihuahua in a shopping cart with an ID. That doesn’t seem to have any benefit to the owner. Also another one of my favorite is tiny barking dogs in shopping carts. But any how. Also there is a very thin like between ESAs (emotional support animals) and legitimate service animals. ESAs don’t have public access laws like SDs do. now my service dog Charlie has many task that he performs. I have POTS disease and reactive hypoglycemia Which means I have almost constant dizziness and he also can alert to when my blood sugar is dropping too low before I feel it.

xobaileeox they can, but the ones I see are misbehaving and riding in a cart. I have huge respect for small service dogs. But a lot of people think they can hack the system and take their dogs everywhere

She had in an old video. She was expecting to retire Gypsy about 6 months after Gypsy passed. Gypsy guided her into the vet but had such late stage cancer she never woke up from surgery.

i would suggest getting a cape to attach to gallop’s harness that says “do not pet: guide dog.” i have a medical alert service dog and ive noticed that people arent as annoying if i have a cape with his harness :) i was also really surprised that gallop doesnt have something like a yupcollar or purple poodles harness and fun cape w patches since u like fashion!
They're part of the standard kit in the UK. All guide digs are trained by one organisation so all wear bright yellow reflective harnesses with a vest that says something the idea of: guide dog at work, do not pet/distract
Emma Jenkins in the uk there are actually two guide dog charities! If you google ADUK you can see the main charities that train assistance dogs for their disabled handlers in the uk. Although there is an option for people to train their own assistance dogs in the uk as I will be. My dog will be a guide/psychiatric assistance dog all trained by me with the help of a trainer but there’s so many different options to go down!
I don't have a guide dog, I have a medical alert, mobility, and guide, but I know that some guide/mobility users won't use Yup/purplePoodles or other gear like that because the dog is wearing the gear every day and putting heavy use into it. With so much time and wear in the gear, if the gear is not perfect and stable it could really affect the dog/their joints and stuff. So it's much more likely the dog has gear from a company that has been creating gear for a much longer time with a longer reputation to show safety if that makes sense.

I’ve over heard him talking about you and how much he loves your content and your message. I always try to be there for him, and growing up with him has opened my eyes to realize how much we take our sight for granted. Thank you for being someone he can relate to and take inspiration from.

I never get why people think sevice dogs are unhappy and forced to work... Including what you said I know the training they go though isn't easy and many pups don't pass for many reasons, only the best fitting ones that are well and happy to work pass to actually become a service dog, so already behind the scens schools make sure all the dogs will be happy and willing to work...

My sister is blind, has been since she was about 14 months old. (due to retinablastoma). She uses "The Seeing Eye" I think it's in New Jersey. She has been so happy with them and is now on her 4th guide dog. Just an FYI. Love your videos.

I'm gonna say no. The dogs are trained to do certain things. They just get a new owner. We can't communicate with animals so they have no way of knowing
A dog will know if another dog is blind, at least my dog when he got blind my other dog would realize it herself and she would start to help the blind one in avoiding objects standing in his way. She became his "guide dog" :D, they of course dont know the word blind but they realize the situation.... But with people hmm not sure, I think they can sense something but probably not realize it completely as a person would, but I would believe they kinda know in their own dog way. Dogs can percieve a lot of things but in a different way than humans.
A video idea could be using a cane vs. using a guide dog
Yes! or (if possible as she'd probably need someone else with her 24/7) maybe like a day without gallop? To see what things she can do on her own or what things she won't be able to do (without extra support, her mum etc) without gallop 😊

I learned so much! I used to work in Starbucks and we had a blind customer with a guide dog, she looked very similar to your Gallop! The customer was a sweet old man and we were always overjoyed to help him navigate around the store! I was really amazed with how smart the dog was as well. Hope you decide to make the navigation video, it would be lovely to know more about it
What do you think about electric cars as a blind person? I was wondering if they could become a problem for you if you’re crossing a street or something like that because they are very quiet.
At least in Germany many brands of electric cars have started putting something in the car that makes artificial noise because they realised the dangers for the visually impared (or really just any pedestrian that is hooked to their smartphone) There is actually a debate to make it mandatory by law now but most brands do it voluntarily.
I’m not sure how things are in other countries but in the US crosswalk lights have noises. I don’t remember what they are but they beep when you’re allowed to cross or something. I imagine that’s what she’s listening for (in addition to cars of course) so they didn’t consider that danger, as she would not be exclusively basing whether she can go on cars alone
@@PanOfCake In Canada it depends on the cross walk, some speak, some vibrate and some don't do anything, but she did address this in her video with Shane Dawson

11:36 yeah I too look very serious coz I have irlen syndrome and even with my glasses on I’m not always completely normal. Coz all my life I have had irlen and I have to have to be focusing a lot! So that focusing power has always stuck with me!

In Britain, a guide dog definitely knows when to cross the road, and when not to, it’s part of their training. If they hear a car, or see traffic, they won’t let the human cross. In their early training you’re not allowed to cross a road with them until it’s completely clear so they can begin to understand, you cannot even cross with them in front of a parked car during training, and sometimes a guide dog will still not allow the human to cross in front of a parked car, and will instead seek out a proper crossing, which they’re trained to identify

My moms old friend is blind, she was not aloud to drink when the service dog was in use. But she did. She was walking home and the dog was trying to lead here , but she wouldn’t follow the dog . And started guiding it, so she walked of in to a big trench. The was hurt , and the dog died. It was so sad. The dog had tried to warn here of the trench.

Love it! You should do a video on the difference between guide dogs, service dogs, and emotional support dogs as far as how the laws work, how to spot fakes and what people working in an establishment can do if theres an obvious fake causing a problem. There seems to be a common misconception that working dogs have to wear a vest, or have paperwork you guys have to carry around, and those misconceptions cause legit people grief while the fakes that carry "paperwork" cause issues with dogs that clearly aren't trained to handle situations. I dont know if you've done this, I'm pretty new to this scene, but honestly, it would he awesome.
I actually got my guide dog from the Mira foundation and you were actually the person that inspired me to look at guide dogs because i have very little depth perception and the cane wasn’t really working out for me and i found your channel and found out that guide dogs were a thing and i looked up guide dog schools and the Mira foundation was on the list and we checked them out and now I have a guide dog named Bee! ( her litter was the B group and they went for bugs so... its still cute) plus i love ur channel

Like how do you stay awake because if I close my eyes I will fall asleep eventually. I guess if you are full of energy it's ok but when you are tired isn't it like really difficult to stay awake?
Līga Ozoliņa she does see shadows and sparkly stuff (sparklers) and she sees bright colours like fireworks and she sees neon lit up shapes / words / signs. So if she closes her eyes, it isn’t the same as then being open

Well like she said she has to stay really attentive when out and about. Even though she can’t see, she can still use her other senses. So those other senses keep her alert and awake. That’s what I would think anyway
functionally blind (its complicated and I don't wanna go into it) person here.
I am light sensitive, and I spend most of my time out in the world with my eyes shut.
If you fall asleep every time you shut your eyes you need to get tested for narcalepsy XD
Joking aside it is a reasonable thing to ask.
Shutting my eyes doesn't make much difference for me, it is just slightly more comfortable.
I get sleepy, or not, based on how tired I am and the situation, not whether I have my eyes open or not. For me though I have a tendancy to get sleepy in movie theatres because it is darker in there, and I am sitting still and not having to concentrate super hard and my brain can tell and is just like, oh goody, nap time.
But no, for me anyway, shutting my eyes doesn't make me sleepy. The other things that make sighted people sleepy make me sleepy (afternoon meetings, sitting on the grass in the sunshine, a large meal etc etc) And keeping my eyes open doesn't help then, they just drift shut XD
I also stop paying as much attention to my hearing and other senses. If I am trying really hard to stay awake in a sleepy making situation I will listen really hard in the same way you might try staring at something to keep your eyes open, doesn't always work though.
All this talking about naps is making me sleepy

@@haleyh5184 That's amazing! I've had such an incredible experience. Vet school was my first option but then I fell in love with the behavioural aspect of veterinary medicine. I did my Master's in animal behaviour and welfare and am now working on my PhD. Throughout my Master's I got to work with many different animals conducting behavioural research in order to improve their welfare. I hope to become a professor and teach animal behaviour in the future. I always tell people that I may just be in one of the best fields because I get to work with animals every day!

In the USA service dogs dont have told wear vests or anything that identifies them. We just have to say its a service dog. They do have to be leashed.
They do not have to be leashed if it interferes with how they do a task.
Colleen T that is state to state, in Cali they are trying to crack down on them wearing vests. Some places here won’t let you enter unless you prove with their ID that they’re a service animal
Kathleen Albee there are no ids for service dogs and it is illegal for a place to require one according to the ADA.
