Parents cannot get citizenship behalf of Portuguese baby.
Article 6.8 of the Portuguese Nationality Law is part of the provisions concerning the **naturalization** of foreigners, particularly in regard to minors. Under this article, children born in Portugal to foreign parents can be naturalized as Portuguese citizens provided that **one of the parents is legally resident** in the country. Importantly, the law now allows naturalization without requiring a minimum period of residence for the parents, significantly easing the path to Portuguese citizenship for children.
Furthermore, it emphasizes that children who attend at least **one year of education** in Portugal, including pre-school, primary, or secondary education, are eligible for naturalization. This is meant to foster a connection between the child and Portuguese society, based on the child’s integration into the education system.
Additionally, it aligns with broader amendments to the nationality law that protect the family unit, meaning parents of Portuguese children, whether naturalized or by birth, have the right to remain in Portugal and regularize their legal status, which safeguards family unity.
These provisions reflect Portugal’s aim to uphold the **best interests of children** and ensure that children raised in the country can acquire citizenship and contribute to society【17†source】【18†source】.
