FYI :- The actual thumb stud is available (in many styles) from any knife making supply store and even some knife dealers will stock various thumb studs. Some of these thumb studs are threaded for "screw in" the blade where the hole in the blade must be tapped & threaded, and other models that are "screw together" types that do not require threading, but rather are two part and just use a hole and the two parts screw together. Using pre-manufactured thumb studs does make this adding of a one hand opener much easier. P.S. If you do happen to cut into the hollow section of the plastic handle, a drop of clear epoxy can fill the tiny void and a bit of polishing will smooth out the opening.
@@reconty2133 It would be difficult to place the stud on the other side of the blade, you had to modify all tho other tools. The reason to do a "lefty"-stud is because the blade is mounted on this side. To do a "righty" you had to use a waiter or a bantam as a base.
Iirc in some locations one-handed folding knives are illegal. But I would argue most people have genuine non-murder use for swiss army knives like these and it isn't just the one-armed people who benefit.
Good idea in case you really need it. Whenever I cut a bolt down, I thread the nut on first and twist it down to the head. It makes smaller bolts fit into your drill straighter, if that's necessary. But the main benefit is that when you remove the nut it cleans up your threads where you made the cut. I think a drop of removable Loctite on the threads before final assembly might not be a bad idea.
As a lefty I apreciate so much this Sak modification! I think it could also work in 111mm Sak with slide lock without modifying the scales. It could make my old Work Champ even better.
You are magic ! The reason why I use a leatherman every day instead of a sak is the one hand opening, with this tutorial I know how I can change my SAKs. So simple, so clever ! Why didn’t I think to do that before !
Mr.Felix you truly are a gift to TH-cam my friend! Always awesome to see you doing something epic! And the how to makes it 100% better! I thank you so much for sharing your thoughts, knowledge and time with us! Hope you and yours have an amazing weekend full of blessings bruv! Cheers, Kimmers and Jerbs 👍🏼🇨🇭🔥🔪🔥🇨🇦👍🏼
I will certainly try this. I have other pocket folder knives I want to do this . Recently I shined up the scales with some used Swiss army knifes and giving them as gifts thank you
great video as usual, and a good modification for the SAK. I would NEVER do this to my Vic's, as this would void my warranty, even though the quality of Victorinox is so good that I don't think I would ever need to use my warranty. I can open my SAK with one hand now (without any add-ons), but it is slower and a little more complicated. I learn to open ALL my folders with one hand ever since I watched 127 Hours, because you never know when you will have only one hand that you can use to open your knife (even more times than if you have a boulder catch one hand), and I usually carry a fixed blade as my primary (almost ALL my fixed blades have a sawback, some better quality than others, but I really like my Carnivore-X), and always carry my Swiss Champ (usually anyway) as my backup, and as my primary, if I am NOT carrying my fixed blade. That said, I do have an inexpensive SAK, that I may do this to, just to see how useful it would be.
Awesome idea! I thoghut about it a lot, how to make it easier. There are metal glues which are stronger than welding, so it's not neccessary to drill out the blade. For example Loctite's epoxy weld bonding compound. Once cured, it is resistant to heat and moisture, including water, fuel, oil, antifreeze, and shop fluids. It won’t shrink and can easily be sanded. And I'm pretty sure other companies has similar products too.
Felix did it again! I love these companies that warns about voiding the warranty while, secretly, enjoys the fact the is a community that continuously buy their products for customizations. Just see Seiko for instance.
Great mod to an already good tool. Something that may make it go easier: thread a regular nut on the bolt before cutting it off then as you unthread it the nut will work as a thread chaser to clean up threads, making it easier to start your acorn nut when the time comes.
This looks like an interesting mod, but I’m concerned about the blade being weakened. Maybe silver soldering a piece onto the blade would work better. I have a Swiss Army knife for use while kayaking, including if I end up in the water needing to cut things (e.g. rescue) where one handed action would be useful, but I also want a UK legal carry, i.e. It must not lock. I also have a Leatherman Crunch which I’ve considered modifying the locking blade to make it non-locking. Maybe I’ll spin up the milling machine and sort it one day.
Nice mod for left-handed people and I like that you done it so precisely. If you are right-handed then I don’t see the point in having a one-hand-opening knife that is designed for left-opening.
Ah man, that’s amazing. Very skilled work Felix. I bet there’s a Victorinox engineer or designer watching and saying “why didn’t we think of that?” 😜😂 You never fail to amaze me Felix👍🏻👍🏻
This is genius. And it doesn't interfere with the other tools at all, and it looks good. It doesn't add to the dimensions either. You should get a job at the factory!
Nice modification Felix! Another option might be the Thumb Stud for Buck 110/112. This thumb stud requires zero modification to the blade. It fits over the spine of the blade and uses a set screw to hold it in place. It can be placed wherever it works best for the user. Ambidextrous. Can easily be removed with no marks or damage to the blade. The handle of the Buck knife does not need to be modified either, due to the height of the blade spine above the handle scales. The SAK handle might need to be modified. Also, the t.s. I am referring to only fits a certain blade thickness range. One would need to verify the thickness of the SAK blade BEFORE ordering that part. It runs around $6-$11USD depending which website it is purchased from. Thanks Felix!!
@@blueeyeswhitedragon9839 I've used a set screw on thumb stud on a Merkur Kat knife without a problem. I will have to check the thickness. I never even considered modifying the SAK handle--great idea if the screw on stud fits. I just hate weakening the knife blade.
