Slide Guitar 101: Scales for Playing Melodies In Open D

- In this lesson we start learning how to play single note melodic lines by playing the D Major, D Minor and Major Pentatonic Scales AND the Blues Scales derived from both Pentatonic Scales. We discuss the importance of achieving precision when landing on a note, applying muting behind the slide and applying vibrato. Finally, we'll learn how to add an alternating bass pattern with our thumb as we learn the scales and practice our technique. Next week, in lesson 4 of this series, we'll learn and arrange our first tune, "when the Saints Go Marching In."

Just took up slide a couple weeks ago. I appreciate these videos a bunch! I come from an era where you couldn't find this stuff online. Mostly inaccurate tablature was about all you could hope for from from internet back then. Cheers!
I've got arthritis in my hands and I've been playing a lot more slide now. Just can't reach some of the chords anymore. I've been practicing with open d and g tuning and I never thought to incorporate the base strokes when playing scales. Really great idea. thanks

I just ordered a conversion but for my older Framus d74 along with a slide to begin learning slide guitar although I plan to lay it across my lap as in a lap steel. Accidentally found this video and need to look at your previous videos. I have a good impression of your instruction so far! Keep it up!

You should try tuning your guitar to dadgad and make a video. It's basicly a sitar tuning
+Luke Swain I've messed around with dadgad some as a finger style tuning, but not as a slide tuning. There are endless options for open tunings, but open G and D remain my favorite for slide!

hi. I just got my first tri cone resonator and I really appreciate the help im finding here on youtube. I was wondering if your instrument was an alersi, and if yes, what do you think of the build quality.A friend and I are interested in the cutaway version but are a bit wary of an unknown far off entity. If its another brand, what might that be? So far weve only seen the cut on the Chinese version. Thanks
Hi Steven and thanks for the kind words. My instrument is a National Reso-phonic Style 1 Tri-cone that I had customized with a cutaway. I am not familiar with Alersi, but have played many other affordable reso-phonic guitars that delivered good tone at an affordable price. I have also heard of people buying less expensive instruments and swapping out the cones. The Paul Beard rest-phonics distributed by Gold Tone are very good. Good luck!
4th finger allows you to slide up to the 12th fret. I use it for that reason on my tricone.

You definitely deserve more likes and subs that is for sure. I think maybe slide guitar whether it be dobro or lap steel has made a real resurgence in the last few years and I hope that it continues to do so. Do you agree or is it just because I have got more interested in slide that maybe I am more aware of it? I have just bought a lovely but relatively cheap Dobro style guitar made by Harley Benton and was delivered yesterday so I am all set to go and learn (with your and other TH-camrs help ) some basic scales to get me started on my way.
Really appreciate your kind words! I've been in the acoustic blues world for a long time so I've always been aware of slide guitar and not sure of where it is in the popular consciousness. Ohyeah... I lost my slide long long time ago...when i still just played c-tuning... But i found that a good cheap plastic lighter ..works awesome!.... Also add to the show gimmic for viewers ..lol....ya ask someone watching for a lighter?.. its holland and most people have one...lol.. and then flick it on to show its a lighter .. and then go out with some delta blues on the fly... hahha...gets 'm everytime..

Hey Scott, my name is Phil and I'm in Scotland. I'm just getting ready to start learning slide guitar blues.
At the moment I have an Epiphone Les Paul, sadly can't afford the real deal Gibson. but the Epiphone has humbucker pick ups and sounds ok .
my question is; when i tune my guitar to open D, as it is an electric guitar do i follow your lessons the same way as someone playing an acoustic guitar. or should I look for different lessons for the different discipline.
Maybe sounds like a silly question, but I'm pretty much a novice so not sure about it.

Hi Phil, everything I teach herew can be applied to the electric guitar. I prefer to learn new tunes and techniques on acoustic as it helps develop good tone and technique. Playing electric is undeniably fun and exciting, but electricity and effects can hide a multitude of sins!

How do i know when and where to incorporate the slide from the scales? And can i mix the major and minor pentatonic? Like from 2-4 fret on string 1 and then 3-5? All confused help. I want to play nice and cant figure out when and where to use the slide. I dont how to explain this
Just keep playing eventually it all clicks.
