This is SO good, Tony! A woman I know who is bored with her playing asked me what she could do to re-inspire herself, and I sent her the link to this video. Learning Open-D saved my guitar life 12 years ago, I'm hoping it will work for her, too!
I have been meaning to try open tuning for years because of exactly what you said, being stuck in a rut. I had no idea it would be this easy to tune and start playing. Not one for being dramatic but I think this honestly just changed my life! Going to leave my guitar in open D and mess around with it whenever the mood takes me! Thank you!
Handy extra tip with these sort of open tunings. If you try barring with one finger across all the strings at either the 5th or 7th fret you'll get the corresponding 4th and 5th chords which can give some extra options when messing about.
Dude, you’re the man. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge. I’ve played guitar for 20 years and needed something new. This was just the nudge I needed to regain interest.
Wow! THANK YOU Tony for simplifying this GORGEOUS TUNING & offering a fresh approach - I have now permanently tuned my old Martin to Open D. I always felt a bit limited w/Open D never quite sure where to go with it beyond a few Chords or find the Notes I didn't even know I was searching for!. Tony truly is an incredibly generous and talented Guitarist. Our Community is fortunate to have his Leadership.
I have been playing guitar for a few years now and was never clear about how open tuning worked. So I’m really glad I stumbled upon this post because it seems so much easier than what I thought. I will not set up one of my guitars to be in drop d on a permanent basis and see what develops. Great post! Thank you 👍
I'll be dusting off my guitar for the first time in 2 years today. I've always wanted to learn fingerstyle and this looks like the basis for it. Thank you so much for reigniting that passion to play!
I really enjoy your teaching style. I watched your video on the same day I bought my first steel slide. I feel like a kid in a candy store. Thanks so much!
This video was probably the most efficient thing I've ever seen for me personally I mean I had zero idea what I was doing watched this and sounded phenom messing around , thanks alot dude . subbed
I'm not a guitar player, don't read music, but I got this,so that means you have a good ability to make ppl understand what it is your teaching, however I'd say it was a bit quicker for new ppl to follow, but I don't think you're doing for completely new ppl. Thank you.
Great lesson!!! Simply explained; and a TON of fun to explore if you’re a frustrated low level intermediate like myself. -thanks so much, and God bless!
This is SO fun! I have been playing as as a way to unwind for about 20 years now but hadn't ever messed with this tuning. I was trying to find something to just noodle around with and play music with my kids. This is perfect for when we aren't wanting to try to cover songs and just want to mess around and jam together. Thank you so much for sharing!
Best thing about open timings - it’d the perfect excuse to buy a new guitar, so you can keep it in that tuning (also, excellent excuse to buy a resonator)
Another mastermind. New guitar arriving today if I'm lucky. Wife was getting annoyed that our guitar was always tuned in open d when she wanted to play, so she made me buy another that I could keep in open tuning.
I've had a friend try to talk me into learning alternate tunings for years. I always put it off because "Ain't nothing wrong with the standard tuning." But this video broke it down so simple. And I already see a whole new level opening up immediately! Wow! Thanks!
Tony this open D tuning is Divine. It's so Light and yet Full. It's quite the oxymoron ! More videos on this tuning please and the Drop Minor! DADFAD And of course DADGAD🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸 MY heart is overjoyed! ❤️❤️❤️❤️😂💃🏾💃🏾💃🏾💃🏾💃🏾💃🏾🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌈🌤🌤🌤🌤🌤🌤🌦
Hi Tony, thank you very much for explaining so well. After many years of playing I fell in love with an 25-years old acoustic guitar I bought. Its sound inspires me to play more. One theory I would like to add for all who want to know exactly. In musical theory at 3:17 the notes are a D-major scale D E F# G A B C# D. “Do Re Mi Fa So La Si Do” as you pointed is exactly the Italian names for C-major scale 😉.
I just listened to another video of the open D. Beautiful simply beautiful. I keep 4 hanging on the wall, I am going to tune the one to open D and just leave it there for a while. Thank you for your great videos Tony !
Good day, I play myself only in open D it is always good to watch you teach us about the guitar you are the best inspiration guy fill with inspiration. Thank again.
Tony that was an excellent and simple explanation of the open tuning, fantastic my friend, you opened up the fretboard for me, now its so much more fun, Genius mate
Im sure you hear this all the time, but you are a great teacher. 36 been playing guitar many years and im still not afraid to learn something new. Will sub and check your back log. Much respect
Hello 👋 I am a complete beginner with a cheap electric guitar. I have come across your tutorial and it looks like I might be able to play some tunes a lot easier. I am going to tune my guitar to open D and have a go. I have liked and subscribed. Thanks John 🎸🎸👍😃
I exclusively play in Open D with thumb-bass fingerstyle. Im originally a bassist, so the rhythmic aspect comes naturally, then it’s just a matter of playing melodically with my index and middle
Pretty cool! I've just been tuning my guitar standard and sometimes a half step down and for the most part when I'm playing metal on my sixth string I just tune an entire step down from standard tuning which is exactly what korn does on their seven string. I thought that tuning an entire step down was called Open d. I don't read notes or play tablature so I was just mistaken but now I will be tuning to open d and trying that as well
thank u you do much I'm 63@an old hippie. I saw this this months ago and you. brought it to LYFE for me better than three gents before you.... can't wait to try it with my fat little fikngers lololol. I subscribed,!!!! does it work worth the 🎉one finger cords???? 😮
Great explanation. Perfect if you want to try something similar to Kevin Cronin's intro to Time for Me to Fly (and the G and A chords with his thumb on the lower 4 strings).
Thank you so much ! I've been reteaching myself to play guitar. I played professionally for the better part of 30 years.. But a few years back I took a nasty fall cracking my head open and fractured my neck. . My marbles are starting line up again but I have some memory loss. Some how my hands seem to know what to do , even though I can't hardly feel my left hand..Go figure. Thanks again !!! Thanks again
If I'm not mistaken, this is just open E tuning, down one full step. So anything you can play in open E (e.g., Gimme Shelter) you can play in open D (but it'll be a full note lower).
Tony.... I immediately took everything you taught me and started writing a song. I figured out the chord progression during the video and am now working on lyrics. Thanks man.
I prefer a modified version, drop tuning the low and high E strings to D, keeping the standard chords, scales, triads and so forth that I'm used to, while adding that nice drop-D enhancement. I suppose that, ultimately, I'm too lazy to have to learn a whole new set of chords and patterns. But if I were to do it, I would come here first to get started. Great video!
OH YEEAAAH Can't wait 2 try this it souds great and very fun I have known of athet ALT/ tunnings but this is a new one on me FUN Drp D is also a BLAST so this? Tony U R A Instructors Instructor and a Gentelman Thank U
Tony and to all you other Guys thanks for the tips I’m new to guitar this Drop D stuff has a wonderful sound. Really like your way of teaching Tony it’s fun clear and structured. A big thanks from over the pond. Dave👌🏻
Who the hell would thumbs down? Like what are your expectations? This is Golden.
been playing/writing pretty much exclusively in open D for years now, i'm a huge fan!
This is SO good, Tony! A woman I know who is bored with her playing asked me what she could do to re-inspire herself, and I sent her the link to this video. Learning Open-D saved my guitar life 12 years ago, I'm hoping it will work for her, too!

Open tunings always sound so much better and I can tell when someone is using it because it just sounds so rich. Thank you, I’m gonna give this a go
Many thanks, opens up a new world of writing songs!

Best video that could ever happen to me . Iv been playing for about 8 years but this is so freeing for me to just groove and stop thinking so much :)
I wish I’d seen this 45 years ago when everything I learned was in standard. Open tuning opens up a million new doors.
Well yes but no
@68’ Rumble Bee really?
I KNOW RIGHT!

Great lesson! I'm already finding all kinds of tunes and melodies with the few chords you showed me. I'll be watching. Thanks again.

Thanks again Tony.
Love the show by the way.

Lol, this is precisely what I've been thinking. Got my eye on a nice new resonator.. 🎸👀
Damn it! that's exactly what I just did yesterday... God save pandemic music consumerism
Another mastermind. New guitar arriving today if I'm lucky. Wife was getting annoyed that our guitar was always tuned in open d when she wanted to play, so she made me buy another that I could keep in open tuning.
Just what I did
Bought a 12 string for exactly this reason...then broke my 6 string marting! :(
Wonderful video. 😊
JOANN (OPEN TUNING)(C)2006
and GOODBYE (C)2006 were both recorded with OPEN D TUNING.
I've had a friend try to talk me into learning alternate tunings for years. I always put it off because "Ain't nothing wrong with the standard tuning." But this video broke it down so simple. And I already see a whole new level opening up immediately! Wow! Thanks!

All romance languages have the same system in music theory, so probably many more people got a bit annoyed with that as well :P
I just listened to another video of the open D. Beautiful simply beautiful. I keep 4 hanging on the wall, I am going to tune the one to open D and just leave it there for a while. Thank you for your great videos Tony !
Very nice! I really enjoy the way you present the teaching of this. Will try this when I get home tonight. Thanks
I have written using this tuning so beautiful but you've brought it back home to me can't wait to get back to it....kudos bro
Good day, I play myself only in open D it is always good to watch you teach us about the guitar you are the best inspiration guy fill with inspiration. Thank again.
You are a great teacher!
Thank you Tony! You are awesome! What a GREAT birthday present!
Open D/E was the first alternate tuning I ever played thanks to my love for Bob Dylan's Shelter on the Tracks
nothing, nowhere brought me here. Your incredible teaching style kept me here ❤️
It's fun to combine open D with the hybrid picking introduced here in an earlier video.
Superbly precient .Many Thanks am I giving.
Brilliant Lesson! Thank You! Today's new tuning to explore!
Thank you Ashton Kutcher. I had no idea you play and teach so well!❤️
thanks man, good work, cheers from Australia....
Tony that was an excellent and simple explanation of the open tuning, fantastic my friend, you opened up the fretboard for me, now its so much more fun, Genius mate
Man that's awesome! Came to see how to tune it and came away with a whole new sound, thankyou
an amazing tutorial into Open D. Thank you
I never had so much fun playing the guitar since I first started 😃

Very nice and lots of fun Tony! See you on Tuesday and hopefully at the 90 day meeting!
... so perfectly great in explaining and giving me defenitly a new horizon ... love & peace
Beautifully explained and it takes away the fear of having a go in open tunings !
Nice one !!

Thank you for keeping this simple and fun. I appreciate everything that you put into this video, thank you sir.
I'm late to the party but this really helps get through the standard rut I've been in for years... To the point i didn't play for months.. Thank you

Finally someone who’s teaching at my exact speed!
Excited to try out Open D, or as I've dubbed it "Dad Fad" 🙃. Surprisingly, makes it easy to remember
Well presented buddy. I'm playing with a slide right now. Opened up a new door for me 😉🇺🇸
And with any open tuning grab a slide even if you’ve never played slide. Magic!
The two people I suggest listening to are Leo Kottke and Ry Cooder for open D and open G stuff, especially using slide and fingerpicking
Beabadoobee’s Loveworm album has a lot of open d songs
Excellent.. Thanks for explaining this so even I can comprehend it...
Thanks for taking the time to walk us through it
GREAT little tutorial. Thank you!
Loved it. This inspired to pick my guitar again.
Tony, thanks so much for the primer on Open D tuning. I'm loving it!
You are such a good instructor. Can you do more with this tool please?

I love this tuning but I keep the high e an e. Definitely one the best tunings.
Love this!!! Very inspiring. Man, I haven’t seen you since I was mandolin shopping years ago and you were demonstrating mandos
Great lesson Tony.

Good teacher. Keep teaching bro
I love this tuning and your videos
That guitar is stunning
Got the lovely Nick Drake feeling.
Love Nick Drake. He was on a whole 'nother level. Elliot Smith too....
Super clear and enlightening. Thanks Tony!
This is freaking awesome thanks brother you’re a lifesaver🙏🏽
This is exactly what i was looking for. Thank you! This is suuuuper helpful!
This is a great video. Thanks for putting the time into this.
Love it, love it, love it, thank you.

Awesome lesson. Thank you so much
Nice one.. could you do a study in the way Barry Gibb & Dolly Parton plays the guitar.. cuz they're both using this tuning
Thanks man!! I only dropped the low E to D until i saw this . I reallg like your approach. Slow but not at the same time. Your easy to learn from
Absolutely awesome video and lesson! So appreciate learning this. Thanks for sharing. Very generous. Cheers.
That guitar is gorgeous.
Awesome video! Thanks brother! 🙏🏼
Excellent Slow and Detailed Lesson. Can You Do A Gordon Lightfoot Style Lesson. Thank You Sir .
