1998 GMC Sierra - No Brake Lights! FIXED!

- This video is about a simple repair and how to test for brake lights that don't work on a 1998 GMC Sierra SLE. The bulbs, fuses, and wires all seemed fine. It appeared the relay did not work no matter which direction it was plugged in, and even trying to clean up the old brake pedal mounted switch did not work... Weirdly enough, and with trying different combinations to troubleshoot and not have to pay for 2 parts.... both the switch and the relay were bad. Tail lights and brake lights have been working great ever since. I did have some bulbs and other unrelated fuses to replace while I was in there so I suppose tearing it all apart wasn't a complete waste of time but it won't really be necessary for most people to have to do that.
I changed one switch out in a 98 xcab Silverado, and it was a little time consuming getting the clip off that retains the rod and switch. The new switch only lasted 1 yr for a 1p yr. Switch. Have do it again
Lasted 1 year for a 10 year switch
When you push down on the break pedal by hand you should be able to hear the relay switch click. Ic it doesn't you may need t ok replace that
@@williamallen7882 it’s fixed. It’s kind of a weird video because I started it, fixed it, then forgot to finish the video and couldn’t really film the switch part anyways but more for info for other people. In my case both the relay and switch were bad. I tried different combinations plugging in each part to make sure.
My cab break light was working and blinkers worked but no brake at the rear. Didn't really make any sense. Took break switch out of donor vehicle still no rear brake.🤔 Checked wire at the lights no power but blinkers working. Fuse on side dash good and relay under hood is clicking. I read inside the cover of under hood fuse box and there's a huge fuse for brakes I pulled it and looked fine put it back still nothing. Out of curiousness I pulled a huge fuse from doner ride and got one break light the other was a wire in the pig tail that ended up being bypassed. Two things at one time and still doesn't make any sense but it's working.
So I take it you didn't do another video on why things arent working right after removing the gauge cluster? 👍 Good job.
Not my best video, removing the gauge cluster was a waste of time. I just thought I would have more room to visualize wires if I removed it. I thought I explained that in the video. It was super weird, but it turned out to be the brake switch and the relay were both toast. I cross tested it to verify it and that’s what it was.
You did. What I meant was I and people I know have had problems when removing or reinstalling the cluster by tearing or scraping or bending those fingers or whatever there called and something ends up not working or intermittently work it gota smack it every now and then to get it to start working again and every time you remove it to fix it just gets worse and that you didn't have that problem so you did a good job or you might have done another video on what I was saying at the beginning.
Ahhh, I get it now. I had a ton of “fun” with the two 1985’s I used to own and removing the gauge clusters from them to replace bulbs or troubleshoot things. Seems pretty delicate for sure
So my 98 k1500 GMC 5.7 has no brake lights I noticed the tail lights were dim and worked but not great. I've replaced all assembly lights and bulbs. I've replaced the brake sensor as the video shows but to no avail. But when I pressed the brakes I remember my trailer brake controller used to flash when the brakes were working not I don't even get a slight flicker at all.. if I tap it on the side it flashes one green light.... Idk if it's the fuse, wiring, or the controller not working... Is there any suggestions on what I could do?
If it’s dim try looking at your splices or for a bad ground? I’m not a certified mechanic. I just do random videos for fun if I think it’s useful :)
check your grounds.
I had gauges jumping around on an old Trans am and it was a ground issue I cleaned the connection and it stopped jumping around
My fuel gauge still isn’t perfect but otherwise driving it almost daily now it has “self resolved” not a fix obviously but it’s behaving again.
The water leak is the seal from the windshield . You need to replace windshield because they come with seal attached to windshield . There is t a fix only by replacing with a new one .
It was actually just the screws under the wiper cowl on the right side
Do your park lights not come on

Bought a brand new brake switch and relay, nothing. Still no brake lights, I’m not sure if it’s because I bought the brake switch and relay from Amazon idk. Both the correct fit, and correct model number. Should I just go to my local auto store and buy a new brake switch?
I’m not an expert… at all. But I would think if you got the correct part numbers and ordered the correct parts that may not be your issue. Try looking for ground issues, check your fuse, I’m sure it’s rare but sometimes a bulb can burn out and fuse together and pop your fuse. Check all your bulbs etc. realistically I would be checking to make sure you plugged the new relay in the right direction. I’m pretty sure it will fit in two ways but only work in one direction as the pins are numbered differently etc. wouldn’t hurt to check your wiring too. Something could have corroded near the back of the truck if you have anything aftermarket back there or a low hanging wire could have snagged or chafed?
@@Darren1767 just replaced the bulbs, replaced a couple of fuses. Nothing.. but did check under the back near the tail lights that it recently had a topper, and looks like wires were tapped into some other wires, possibly for the brake lights.. but will be looking into it more layer
