  • 1969 Mustang BOSS 429 & 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T 426 HEMI Muscle Car Of The Week Episode 301
    Today, we’re taking a look at two Muscle Car Icons… a 1970 Dodge Challenger 426 Hemi Convertible and a 1969 Ford Mustang BOSS 429. We’ve shown each of these cars individually, but chose to look at them together this time to see how these two very different cars both rose to the top of the Muscle Car ladder.
    The Challenger was marketed towards the upscale, personal luxury crowd, even with the 426 HEMI engine under the hood. Challengers are comfortable and feature-rich, looking to edge out the Mercury Cougar in the marketplace.
    The Mustang BOSS 429 was an entirely different animal, developed as the street-going carrier of the NASCAR-bound BOSS 429 V8 engine. It was a big project, as the giant Boss ‘9 engine didn’t fit in the stock Mustang’s engine bay, so Ford worked with contractor Kar Kraft in Dearborn, Michigan to make the necessary modifications to accommodate the big 429. Redesigned front sheet metal was needed to move the shock towers outboard so the Kar Kraft team could install the engine. Every extra inch was needed, so the battery was moved to the back of the car, which also helped shed some weight off the nose. The front suspension was tuned up with different springs and a stiffer sway bar to manage the additional weight, power, and performance of this specially built Mustang.
    On the other hand, the Challenger’s engine bay was designed to accommodate the 426 Hemi headed V8 from the beginning. The car was a fresh design for 1970, and one of the goals was to be able to fit any of the Chrysler engines under the hood, from the long slant six up to the 440, and the 426 Hemi was the widest of the bunch by far. The Challenger is 4.4 inches wider than the Mustang, but even so, the Hemi is a tight fit. The 426 Hemi is another engine that had to be sold to the public to remain legal in NASCAR racing.
    Driving these two cars are very different experiences, with the cushy Challenger winning on a comfort and ease-of-operation standpoint. That wider body means more room inside, and amenities like power steering, power brakes, torque-flight automatic transmission, AM/FM radio, and a full gauge package in the dash make it an easy driving ride.
    The BOSS 429 is far more high-performance in feel, with manual steering, a 4-speed manual transmission, but it did have power brakes and an AM radio. The suspension is stiffer on the BOSS, and we believe it was also the first Mustang to receive a factory installed rear sway bar.
    While the 426 Hemi was rated at 425 HP and 490 pound feet, the high-revving BOSS 429 was only given a 375 HP rating, and most consider that a low-ball. Both engines had huge valves and free flowing combustion chambers that liked high RPM usage, and both are easily modified to significantly raise their power output.
    These cars are at the pinnacle of Muscle Cars for all the right reasons… high power, low production totals, with 857 ‘69 BOSS 429s built and only 12 ‘70 Hemi Challenger Convertibles, but they are also valued because they are just really cool cars. And while they really don’t compare from a function or market standpoint, we thought it would be fun to share two of the most drooled-over cars from The Brothers Collection in one episode.
    While nobody could have predicted the astonishing values of these cars decades on, we have no doubt that people recognized that were both very special cars!

    • @jeremythompson9122

      A stock Hemi Cuda or Challenger would beat a stock Boss 429 by a pretty decent margin in the 1/4 mile. The Hemi E-Bodies ran very low 13's but the Boss9 ran low 14's. A 428 CJ Mustang with a 3.91 or 4.30 rear can beat a Boss9 in the 1/4 mile so a Boss9 doesnt have much of a chance against the Hemi. At least not in stock form. Lose the smog pump, install a bigger carb, headers, and a more aggressive camshaft and ignition curve and the Boss9 is an absolute MONSTER. A completely different car with just those few mods

    • @johnkendall6962
      @johnkendall6962 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jeremythompson9122 I agree the Hemi was much higher tuned. In stock trim it would easily outrun the Boss. As prepared for racing they were very close. That's why Chrysler went to the winged Daytona and Superbird.

    • @MrJett1971
      @MrJett1971 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jeremy Thompson the Boss ‘9 isn’t, and never was a drag engine. It would run all day long compared to some others, as we all know it was designed for use in nascar, not drag racing. The logical choice for Ford would have been to put it in the Galaxie, but logic doesn’t generally come into play with performance cars...they wanted to have some fun with it. A Boss 302 would outrun it on a road course, and a Boss 351 would beat it in the 1/4, but the 429 just has that extra bit of mystique.

      Hemi was a mutt on the street just the same, although slightly less. The hemi also dual quads while the boss used a teenzy 735 Holley while the baby B302 had a 780 Holley, funny huh. The exhaust manifolds are anemic on the 29 compared to the hemi as well, thanks to the shock towers. Cam specs were also tame. The B9 head with the monster intake port is more suited for a 460+” engine minimum not a 429. Give the boss the setup it deserved and it’s taking that 426’s lunch every time. It was a bad combo on fords part, not the engines fault. It easily would have been the top gun muscle car had ford done it justice. All just to try to make it more “streetable”

      @shawnturbeville994 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mitchanderson5813 I agree with you. The Boss 429 could have been the hottest muscle car ever built. The hardware and potential were there. As you pointed out Ford hamstrung the engine, with the intake, cam and exhaust. The 426 Hemi was also finicky and had to be well tuned to run its best as I said in my comment. A 440 six barrel did also. A well tuned Hemi was bad to the bone. And that was without replacing parts. No amount of tuning would make the Boss 429 run like the Hemi without changing some of the parts you mentioned.

    The Boss 9 Represents a VERY COOL wall to wall Hemi in One of the Most Beautiful non Shelby Mustangs of all time ! The iconic 69 sportsroof !! YES....

      By they way it not a Hemi unless it is built by Chrysler as they trademarked the name. It is just called hemispherical combustion

      @@noneyabusiness7053 Hemi= Hemispherical combustion Chamber. So what's your point?

    I owned Boss 429 KK2034 for over 30 years. I ran it with the original "820-T" factory engine and headers, later putting in an actual Holman and Moody spec NASCAR 429, with one of the twenty Super Stock (Mickey Thompson Drag program) original two four barrel intakes. The original motor was probably around 390 real flywheel horsepower - 735 cfm Holley and mild cam signed off at 6,000 rpm - the Boss 429 Mustang was, as noted, only sold to the public to make the engine legal for NASCAR. The HM NASCAR motor would easily keep pulling hard way past 7000 rpm (where I limited it), and with a 4000 lb car, full gas tank, me (250 lbs) would run 122 mph quarter miles on too small 10" Goodyears (that slide rules out to about 650 HP). Bill "Grumpy" Jenkins (of Chevrolet Pro Stock fame) after examining the design, stated it had more potential than ANY other big block engine - and Bob Glidden proved that - with years of domination of NHRA Pro Stock with his Thunderbird, and it had at least 50 horsepower over the 426 Hemi on the Super Speedways - which is why Chrysler built the Daytonas and Superbirds - to make up the shortage in streamlining. By the way, the Boss 429's were invoiced directly to Shelby American on the window sticker - which ticked off Carroll Shelby since they competed directly with his Shelby GT-500.
    Awesome road car, very comfortable and handled surprisingly well for so much forward weight. Miss it I do! Mike

    Mopars are my Favorite, but I would take that Mustang as well! I’ve always heard that both motors were underrated... My family had them both & a lot of others... We still have a few in the Family as well... Nothing in stock form though. I think y’all should put them on the dyno!!! Have Fun!!!

    I'd go with the 429. 4 on the floor, aggressive looks, and sporty performance. Not to mention the functional hood scoop is wild, and the fastback lines beat the Challenger's drop top.
    Had the Challenger been a different colour, different transmission, and different body style, it would've been a much closer match. A Hemi Orange R/T looks amazing, but had the Boss been Grabber Blue or even Raven Black, it would've made the decision that much harder.
