Maybe it’s not that life without work is too boring for him. He announces retirement. He has time to experience the mundanity of life. All the little things that we take for granted. He’s filled with an overwhelming appreciation for living that he feels he must express. He must convey the joy of living. It’s why the final message of most of his films is “live.” There’s beauty in living we all must appreciate. This animation conveys that beautifully. Genuinely makes me tear up being a creative myself.

I think the thing is to not mourn someone once they’re gone, but rather, to learn from their life and appreciate all they gave the world when they were here. While easy to say and hard to do (and also, not mutually exclusive actions), I think that’s both a healthier way to live and also what those who’ve passed would prefer the living do with their time.
@@Unownshipper also, the dead themselves only wish for the living to be happy, I compare death to being told by your parents that you're moving to another country. You can't do anything about it, but when finally move, you only want the people around you to keep being happy.
@ its not about skill, its about originality. If you watch closely, what makes ghibli movies good past their incredible animation is their story, their uniqueness.
I like to think that he only declares retirement because he is satisfied and has no more stories to tell... Then he gets another idea for a story and comes back. As long as he is well and happy, I will accept any amount of stories he wants to create or stop at.
That's so relatable. I always used to tell myself(and still do) that I'm quitting drawing and that I have no talent for it at all- but then a new idea strucks through me, and I quickly turn on my drawing tablet at 3 AM. My life would have been extremely boring without my favourite hobby
True and also he uses all his energy that he says I'm retiring and when he gets an Idea and his energy back then he gets out of retirement and works on that film. ❤
Takahata mentored Miyazaki well, but alas Miyazaki has proven to be a terrible mentor. The biggest problem of him not being able to retire is the lack of talent that could inherit the mastery of these two masters. Ironically I think Hosoda is the closest inheritor to Ghibli's masters, and Miyazaki rejected him telling him that his talents would be wasted in Ghibli, and that he has better places to shine. Miyazaki was probably right, but I can't help imagine how bright Ghibli's future would have been under Hosoda's direction.
I didn't notice the Yamadas style until the shot of the children playing with him. It is a perfect one to use here. This is very touching and gently funny. Great job!
The fact that he wouldn’t be mentioned in the same breath as the greatest names in art, is something that truly saddens me. He truly is an artist. An amazing one, too.
I really wish he and his son can get a good relationship as father and son before the inevitable end. I was left by my father and this is the only thing that makes me sad thinking about his magic.
They don't have a GREAT relationship but they did work together on making From Up on Poppy Hill, and as far as Miyazaki's cold demeanor goes, he seemed pretty proud and supportive by the end of it. Not saying it's great, just not bad.
I am glad that he tries to do new things, even if he struggles with them. Experiencing new perspectives and appreciating things outside your comfort zone is healthy.
I love the little details.... the spots on his face that appear sometimes, the tears after the cat scratch, an airplane (because it is Miyazaki after all), the distinctiveness of the other characters, his Citroen 2CV in the studio parking lot...

I don't know if he would have changed his mannerisms like that, and the film shows he didn't change his mannerisms.
I think he’s getting the words retired and vacation mixed up. Kind of like how Kiss had been on their “farewell” tour for about a decade. 😂 As long as inspiration exists they’re never going to truly stop what they love doing.

I loved wathcing his movies as a child and Spirited Away was always my favourite. Safe to say that he's amazing and that I only hope to best in his retirement!!

It feels right, if that makes any sense even then, i'm very grateful to have been alive when he released a film, even if it was his last, and i did not get it in the slightest at the first time
I think it's just the freedom that comes from not having to work with a deadline that makes it easier and perhaps more fun to create again. Since he already said he's retiring, he can create without the pressure that he used to have before.
What a beautiful ode to a beloved and human artist. Thank you for expressing such great joy! The caticature of Suzuki is adorable too, it's not often we see other members of Ghibli portrayed by their fans with the love we give (deservedly!) to miyazaki himself. While it is little sad that Miyazaki is officially retiring I think people need to realize that retirement is part of life because personally how I like to look at it is when you retire from your profession that’s a sign that you did your job and that you left off an incredible legacy of art that people will enjoy for generations to come.
