Do you have evidence to supoort these claims about the Bahamas Bruce?
Because downtown Nassau where the cruise ship ports is heavily reinforced by the Royal Bahamas Police Force. So before you're sued for defamation I suggest you remove this asinine post.

I was in Nassau two years ago and decided to take a walk further into the island. Luckily, the locals kept telling me to turn around (yes, I am not very aware).

I served aboard ship in the USCG, and we did a 4-day port call in Nassau. Even on the main street, locals try the "welcome to the Bahamas" spiel. They tried to sell us drugs, solicit us for money, and even invited us to "a party" somewhere else on the island. Even the police warned us not to hang around with the locals. As Coast Guardsmen, the best place we hung out, was the lounge of a cruise ship. They allowed us onboard, as long as we were in uniform and not rowdy. I've never desired to visit the Bahamas again.

After taking half a dozen Caribbean cruises, I’ve decided it may be best to get off the ship in Key West and forget about the other stops on the cruise itinerary. Every port seems to have a sense of abject poverty just a few blocks from the cruise docks. Even the supposed bargain shopping is more of an overpriced ripoff. The list of ten is too short.

I took the time to read the most current State Department advisories, but was absolutely stunned to see the Bahamas at the top of this list. I have taken around eight Caribbean cruises over the last dozen years, stopping at at least fifteen different locations and there is no place I have been to as many times and enjoyed more than Nassau and Paradise Island. I have walked and taken local buses around both islands and have very rarely experienced any problems. I saw the comment posted by a fellow NCL cruiser and while I liked the NCL private island, I would hope that this stop would never replace a day or overnight in beautiful Nassau and Paradise Island. I literally choose my cruise itineraries around this port!

We were on a cruise that stopped in Rostand and it was THE WORST. We’ve been all over the Caribbean and this was by far the worst and most obviously most dangerous. We were accosted right off the ship to the point of being harassed. Thank heaven my husband is a big guy and able to handle himself.

My first experience on Jamaica was a simple cab trip to Dunn River Falls, and even in such a touristy area, I was grabbed by the wrist and yanked over to someone's stand to buy something. *Most* of the locals were rude or looked as if they were tolerating our presence. Years later I went on a cruise with my parents and didn't get off the ship in Jamaica and encouraged my parents to stay away too, but they went. I got the story later from my mom that they were almost mugged by 2 men who were stalking them. But thanks to my father's affable nature, he managed to win them over by offering them a couple of beers from a six pack he bought.

Sixteen years ago my wife and I took a cruise on the SS Veendam, part of the Holland America fleet. Our itinerary included Grand Cayman (yay!!), Cozumel (smaller yay), and....Guatemala. Yep...Guatemala. We were greeted at the Guatemalan naval base (there was no cruise ship port in Guatemala in 2003, and I suspect that there is no cruise ship port in Guatemala today) by a host of Guatemalan sailors armed with submachine guns. Upon disembarking, there was a desultory bazaar with presumably locally grown/stolen goods along with a dozen or two very sullen and angry-looking locals attempting to unload their wares upon the more gullible passengers. I don't think they sold much. My wife and I took an excursion to some Mayan ruins or other (yeah, it wasn't exactly the grand thing you might imagine it to be). The excitement was the bus ride to and from the ruins. Let me put it this way - the roads of Guatemala and the driving behavior of Guatemalans will put the most steadfast and courageous among us to the ultimate test of our nerves. That we all survived was nothing short of miraculous, as we hurtled down miniscule cliffside "roads" that were little better than horse paths, while traffic flew by (at equal breakneck speed) in the opposite direction never more than inches to our left. I have never, ever been so grateful to reboard a cruise ship. Hell, I have never, ever been so grateful merely to survive something. The SMART passengers that skipped the port call and just stayed on the boat to drink their asses off got a very good laugh at our expense.

Don’t try to tell that to the hundreds of cruise tourists I see in Antigua, Guatemala several times a year. They seem to enjoy their excursions, restaurant and market shopping immensely. Way to scaremonger about a beautiful destination. Several downtown USA cities where cruises are originating(Baltimore, Los Angeles, New Orleans)are more dangerous

@Amanda 1 If you wan't to take a 7 day cruise up the Queensland coast to Cairns - P & 0 Australia would be my choice as they have fabulous kids clubs. They won't want to leave. Staff are excellent. Older style ship at around the 70 000 ton mark. I prefer the smaller ships rather that the floating shopping malls with around 4000 - 6000 on board. Princess Cruises are also great a step up from P and O, but the average age on these cruises would be 55+. In Australia we seem to complain that we get the older ships and not the newer 130 000 tons and above superliners. In the US they are complaining that they want more of the smaller ships like the Sun and Sea Princess which are more true to the original meaning of cruising. They can sail to more exotic places where the larger ships can't. Off to cruise to Papua New Guinea in 6 days on the Sea Princess - LOVE this ship.

Roatan, 2008: Due to a hurricane, the ship changed its route to Roatan. As soon as my late husband and I stepped foot away from the cruise port premises and heavily armed guards (just a few yards away), a group of 8-10 years old boys attempted to rob us. We flagged down the guards and the boys took off running in all directions. Fourteen years later, I still have no desire to revisit Roatan.

And, if you want to visit a port and get robbed without even realising it, come to Sydney Australia and buy food at Circular Quay, all of the restaurants there are bistro style (think diner) and completely over charge for VERY average food. My recommendation, hop a train from Circular Quay to Central and visit Dixon Street (Chinatown), great food and very affordable.

Stayed on Grand Bahama for a week. Rented a car and we went all over by ourselves. Some of the areas looked really scary, there is a lot of poverty. I can see how some people would be weirded out by it. But nobody bothered us at all. People weren't overly friendly at first, until we struck up a conversation with them and expressed an interest in their beautiful island. Then they came out of their shell and were very nice and friendly. I personally don't want to stay on some manufactured island. I like experiencing the culture of a place. Sad how many folks we talked to on our flight back who had never left the "Americanized" tourist area and never got to experience the people, the real food of the island, etc. I think they are really missing out. I went on a cruise to Bermuda. It was by far my favorite island. My bf and I renter a moped and ventured off on our own. So many of our fellow cruisers thought we were crazy for going off on our own with just a moped but we saw so much and spoke to so many locals and we really got to see what this island had to offer. So many people just stayed nearby the cruise port which was nothing compared to the beauty of the island and the friendliness of the locals. If your able to venture off and experience the island don’t just do tourist things

I've been to New Orleans at least one hundred times and I've never been robbed or bothered. The chap making this somehow forgot to mention Montego Bay, Jamaica.Maybe all of that stinking island. I've never felt welcome there and I've dropped in at least five times. So, I remedied the situation by NOT gettingoff the ship when docked there. I just wave at the island from the pool deck.I agree with his assessment of St. Lucia. For a tropical island I found mostof the native there cold and aloof....just waitin' for tourist money.Of course, that's what mass tourism does. They stayed with us all day. The bus was surrounded by police motorcycles and cars on all four sides. When we got out and walked, they all walked with us - carrying machine guns!!! I walk slower than most, so my "bodyguard" stayed with me, bringing up the back of the group. By the end of the day we were good buddies! When we stopped for lunch, some were standing guard inside the restaurant and some stood outside - front and back of the restaurant! I was never so happy to sail away at the end of the day.

Whether it's being harassed every 50 feet to braid your hair or charging $5.00 for a tiny snack sized bag of chips, it's an outrageously expensive and openly hostile place that has only gotten worse over the years. I’ve cruised the Caribbean for 34 straight years in every possible combination with my spouse, my sister, other couples, old friends, new friends and have never experienced a single problem. You have to trust your gut instincts. Island residents know that the cruise ship passengers are their bread and butter. When the ships depart, so does the money. I went to St Thomas love it. I went to Meghan Beach and paid for a taxi bus, it was cheap and good services. I had no problem, my husband walked around to stores right off the port. He did not wander far off and we both enjoyed the island.

Its everywhere you go when tourist are involved plus how you present yourself. For old guys leaving the boat wearing socks with sandles, shorts past your knees,Hawaiian shirt,Rolex on and wallet in the back pocket etc...it just screams "mug me".

I agree with Antigua being on the list. The cruise line even warned us about going ashore. The locals hated us. They would walk directly at us with hate in their eyes. We were with an older couple and she had MS and was on a small electric scooter but they still walked right at us. We only went about 2 blocks and headed back to the ship. This is the first time I was ever afraid while on a busy street in the middle of the day. Never going there again.

The best stop I've been to so far. All smiles, no pressure selling, super polite locals, no one yelling at you... and ironically enough, the port I've done the most shopping at. Who knew that people would actually shop if you weren't screaming in their face 24/7? Shocking.
