My one experience hearing Edward Stitt playing live with a pickup rhythm section , Sonny made that rhythm section play over its collective head . Stitt was was like a old fashioned Locomotive Train building up steam then it was full steam ahead barreling down the tracks . One of the most enjoyable Jazz sets I’ve ever witnessed ! Sonny Stitt played in front of roughly 150 people on the UC Berkeley Campus in a defunct hideaway on Campus called The Bears Lair . Sonny blew like he was playing in front of 10,000 people !
Heard him live a few times myself and got to have a really good conversation with him, dispite some reports that he could be a difficult person I found him to be extreamly gracious and encouraging as I was just starting out as a saxophonist back then. What a increadible musician he was.
Sonny Stitt , what a incredible musician. His musical ideas excites my spirit I never get tired of listening to him... Barry Harris, what a player you are
I have just started jazz a few months ago and chose the tune up solo as my third transcription project. I am 2 months in, on minute 2:00 with 5 and a half pages. These 3 and a half minutes feel infinite!!!
