I am lucky enough to be getting my Megane E Tech the first week of Dec 22 here in Blighty. It’s a glorious EV in looks, presence and driving. You have really undersold the tech. Google and Android Automotive kick MG tech out of the park, there is just no comparison between them. Speed of response, navigation with recommended charging stops where your battery is conditioned in readiness, watch TH-cam on info screen whilst recharging due to access to Play Store (no phone required) and I could go on. Talking about charging, great if you can get a 130 KWh charger but with 22Kwh charger on board, overall charging experience with what is available in the UK currently, it’s pretty solid in the Megane.
Regen braking with the paddles behind the steering wheel on twisty country roads is akin to down shifting and engine braking as you approach a bend but with instant torque as you power out. It is thoroughly enjoyable. Then there’s fit and finish. Some of the misalignment and inconsistent panel gaps I have seen on MG4 models does not promote quality in comparison to the Megane.
Yes, I am paying around £6,500 more for my Techno model over the top of the range MG Trophy but each and every time I am behind the wheel, I just know it’s an investment that I will revel in.
Answering another comment 5 yr warranty and 8 yrs on the battery with the Megane.

The megane e uses NMC LGChem batteries. That is bad.
11kW charging will fill the battery easily overnight. Instead the MG4 has V2L, you may get the electricity back from the battery to drive electrical devices or use it as emergency powersource. That is much more essential.

Good vidéo. Thank you. Both cars are also for sale in France. For the MG4 price starts at 28990 € with the small 51 KWh battery and goes up to to 34990 for the luxury edition with 64 KWh battery. The Renault Megane E-Tech that starts at 37200 € with the 40 KWh battery and 130 hp engine and goes up to 46990 € with 60 KWh battery, 220 hp engine and iconic equipments. (All prices are bonus excluded)
So clearly the MG4 is significantly cheaper. It is putting the low end version of the Renault EV seriously at risk and at the other extreme of the spectrum the high end version is almost as expensive as the new Standard Model Y which is way better in every aspects (engine power, space, infotainment system, navigation, charging, resell value on the market...). Don't get me wrong : I'm not saying the Renault Megane E-TEch is not a good car. It is. But in term of pricing, it is not well positioned I believe. Sure it is a succes in France right now because it is a car manufactured in France but the competition in other ountries will be fierce.

Maybe this is an old review, but the only car in this section and price range I would buy is the Megane. They got almost everything right with this car. And I already own an EV in this same segment. Tesla has the acceleration but Model 3 is not even close to the same level in ride comfort and you know, in the being a car part. LFP is god awful in our harsh winters. Cupra is a great ride, but doesn't have the quality and the battery system takes a beating in the winter. Add to that the option to slow charge in 22kw in cities, where we have a ton of chargers but not in front of apartment buildings, is a godsend. Never owned a Renault in my life but I like how they stayed right in the sweet spot with everything with this car.

I am considering both cars as they offer almost similar specs and features but a lot of reviews kinda miss that the Magane has Android Automotive built in to the car. That means no more need for a phone connection like android auto. Voice commands for AC, demister, etc. Battery info is connected to google maps so the system computes where to charge and how long to charge just like a tesla. MG does not have that. I tried it and it's AI assistant is just not very good. For a tech person like me I really appreciate that. Yes, MG's price is significantly less but it is also out of stock here in Ireland and the wait time is 6 months.

Since this video was made Renauld have knocked about 4000€ off it's price and, here in France, we get a 5000€ subsidy from the government. This applies to all EU built cars but not third country ones like China. In addition I understand that the MG price has increased by quite a bit. So it would be interesting if the comparisons were done again.

A superb review from a very fine Motoring Journalists, who takes the very essence of the car and distills it into what makes it great.....Well done!
I've just ordered the Top-of the-Range Megane Iconic model (with that excellent Heat Pump). It was a straight choice between a Tesla Model 3 or the Megane, both were the same price.....No contest! (The MG's boot was too small).
The sterile, poor build quality, horrid interior, ugly Tesla is so dated compared to the Renault. It's tech is so 'yesterday'. Brilliant move by Renault going to the experts, Google!
By the way, Renault say the 0-60 time is 7.5 Seconds. Independent tests have clocked it at 6.9 Seconds (that's Mini Cooper S territory but with that lovely instant torque).......how typically French, underplaying. Unlike the Italians, which always exaggerate!

Couple of corrections about the Megane:
    1. 11 kW is still 3 phase. The highest you go on AC per phase is 32A generally, only Zoe went 64A and crazy American standards allow up to 80A, but speaking about Europe, the highest single phase AC charging speed is 7 kW.
    2. You generally don't want a 3 phase charger at home, the components are much costlier, the units themselves are much more expensive and if you go DIY it's still a lot of extra work over something you generally don't even use because a 7 kW charge overnight is fine for every scenario barring nuclear apocalypse. That said, what Megane does bring to the table with 22 kW charger (see Zoe experience) is a practical ability to use an EV without a home charger by utilizing public AC chargers which are essentially everywhere so that you can be efficiently topping up while you do your groceries etc. MG4 would practically require a DC charger to do so which are obviously more rare. This also concerns leisure travel in obscure locations that don't and won't have any DC insfrastructure.
    3. Megane doesn't have 1 pedal mode, it was intentional design. Renault said they wanted the drivers to keep the muscule memory for distinction between slowing down an stopping completely. But this dosen't really affect efficiency at all, it's just a preference.

    • @mondotv4216
      @mondotv4216 ปีที่แล้ว

The charger components for three phase are not "much costlier". A three phase EVSE capable of 32A is practically identical to a single phase EVSE capable of 32A apart from the extra wiring. Nearly all the negotiation happens on the sense wires (CANBUS). The onboard charger is more expensive and the install cost can be much higher but the Tesla Wall charger V3 is the cheapest EVSE in Australia and it can do single phase or three phase out of the box.

One minor correction: at 10:37 you say the Megane can come to a complete stop with one pedal driving - it cannot. There is no 100% one pedal driving in the Megane, you will need to press the brake to stop the car completely, so no advantage here.
However, please also note that the care uses regenerative braking when using the brake pedal. I other words: lifting the foot off the accelerator to brake is only for the driver's comfort, he might as well just switch regen mode off so he can "sail" whith his foot off the accelerator and he will still regenerate energy by pressing the brake pedal. This might even be more efficient.

There are too many parts in a gas car in the past a car company made these parts in-house the profit was put on the finished car price. Today, parts are made under sub-contract and have profit added before delivery to the car manufacturer. When this is all added up to the final price of the car there is little room to add a profit, hence the gas car companies are going broke.
