Ironically, no amount of censorship could change Uranus's gender so it just became two female cousins that were gay for each other. According to their way of thinking they only made it worse. LOL

The government’s been somewhat conservative for a long time, despite most of the people being for gay marriage. Recently, though (as in like a few days ago), the LDP had a really bad election year (down more than 50%, I’m pretty sure), and more progressive parties that are pushing for same sex marriage to be ratified have a much better shot at making that a reality.

American media is written by many people, screen tested, reviewed, changed, and ultimately this leads to producing shows that reflect an average political leaning. In Japan however, Anime start off as manga, and the artist has full creative control. Since artists tend to be very progressive, this results in anime being more progressive. I’m sure if you look at Japanese TV that is written and produced in the same way America does, it’s a lot more conservative.

Same goes for queer people and representation. They WISH it was like that. doesn't mean it is. What makes people think that the ultra-conformist society that Japan is, welcomes queer people, that are inherently different to the heteronormative way of life everyone is so accustomed to? @@Razgarelit was because Yukito has the moon power (think of him as the moon) while Sakura and Touya have different source of magic, in Sakura's case was because it was from the stars (Sun). Eriol has power that comes from the Sun. I don't really now how to explain it but when we talk about magic in Clamp's universe, the people are more influenced by the moon, considering that most of our body consists of water, and water is influenced by the moon and its faces. In the reality that's what we were told in some countries that happens to women. The moon faces really has a deep influence in people because of water.
Like with the waters in the sea.
When you see more activity in water is when the moon is full moon and new moon.
Syaoran's power, because he is a descendant of Clow, he has a part of Sun's influence in him.
That's why Syaoran is very cautious around Kaho. Kaho is a human so even if she has a Moon influence, she is still a human, so Syaoran seems to perceive that. Sakura feel very calm and happy around Kaho, not only because of Kaho's personality but because of her powers.

He also beheaded young Trolius, son of Prium, and attempted to kidnap his sister Polyxena who he had fallen in love with. In revenge, Polyxena learned of Achilles' weakness which she gave to her brother Paris.
She was later sacrificed at Achilles' temple. In his afterlife many traditions state he lives eternally on the white isle with Polyxena or Medea or even Iphegenia.
What's even worse is Achilles actively killed the Athenean soldiers by asking his mother to spread sickness because he was mad to give up the slave Breseida to Agemmemnon. This is what lead to Patroclus wearing Achilles' armor and dying.

I genuinely have no idea where ur yap session was all abt cuz it has no relation to that story or the original comments context, Zeus and Poseidon aren’t very good people as well, HELL THEY DONT EVEN SCRATCH THE SURFACE OF MORALITY, but people will still name a move using thunder, Zeus, or a trident, Poseidon, because they relate and fit into the context, acting in same ways so you’d DESCRIBE THEM AS THEM IN SPITE OF HOW SH-TTY THEY ARE **COUGH COUGH** THE TIME ZEUS TRANSFORMED INTO A SWAN AND F-CKED SOMEONE AND HOW POSEIDON PULLED A P DIDDY ON MEDUSA IN HER OWN GODDESSES TEMPLE **COUGH COUGH** anyways

@Belphagor_ the commenter said they pulled a 'Petroculos and Achilles ', as you said saying they ignored a bi relationship. However, as I stated in the very first sentence, Achilles is not Bi-rep just because he is bi. You wouldn't show a picture of a catholic priest at a pride parade because they are known for assaulting young boys. There are many historical figures who are bi who deserve proper recognition: Virginia Wolfe, Marlene Dietrich, or Oscar Wilde. Real figures whose bisexuality is ignored in favor of heteronormativity. Frankly, I am quite tired of a fictional rapist and serial assaultist being held up as a flag of birepresentation as, though well intentioned, it perpetuates harmful stereotypes. If you prefer to hold a banner to a harmful myth as opposed to uplifting true bifigures of history and fiction(why not Virginia and Vita, Baker and Kahlo, Garbo and Pollak, or even Roosevelt and Hickock).

I don't think japanese society is really that progressive especially at the time you were talking about(sailor moon era) It's just that the artists and entertainers are always the most progressive in the nation since they often tackle with the idea of the status quo and realize it's flaws(in all places of the earth). And if you look at them(I haven't watched the show just completely from the excerpts you showed me so take this with a grain of salt) one of them confirms a male role and the other female role. This is much more acceptable in Asian conservatism than you think historically. Most countries in Asia always had prominent trans communities like India and Thailand while strictly forbiding same sex couples. This type of conservatism wants you to stick to the norm even if you aren't the norm. For them the idea of a man loving an other man is rule breaking, but the idea of a women in a man's body loving a man is still complying to their status quo. Hence it's accepted. I think it's the same force at work.

It's not "progressive" Japan is incredibly conservative. The reason Sailor moon has a female couple was because it was looked at as a non-issue. Not a statement on sexuality rather just a funny quirk of the characters. Saying Japan is progressive for LGBTQ, just cuz anime has gay characters in it, is overlooking the thousands of repressed and discriminated against Japanese citizens who get pushed to end their own lives over their own sexuality.

He's not saying Japan itself is progressive (tho like anywhere it's not fully black and white and a lot of places and companies are moving towards acceptance of queer folks), he's addressing folks, mostly Americans, who watch anime who call it woke trash if newer anime contains a queer character, which is very much a problem in American fandoms of Japanese shows.
There are far more examples of queer characters in anime than that of Sailor Moon from that era and even earlier that were massively influential in the space! Heck, The Rose of Versailles was originally written in the 70s and had a lot of gender exploration with one of the main characters, Oscar.
That mangaka, Riyoko Ikeda, is also cited as one of the earliest to have a trans protagonist in her story Claudine in 1978. Japan was doing things with fiction in the mainstream, especially in media seen for children like Sailor Moon, decades before America really started in on it.
Like it's a little silly to deny the progressiveness they have with the history of queer works as old as the 70's.

Think about this sentence. Why is he talking about Japan being a "conservative paradise" in the present tense with "is"? It's because he's addressing an issue where people believe that to be true right now.
Why do people believe that to be true? Because people right now, especially Americans, have had an adverse reaction to queer people being in anime and other media recently. Someone says they're gay in a show or a situation in which it shows a character is gay is shown in a trailer or somethin' and suddenly it's "woke garbage."
He goes on to explain that queer folk in anime has been something in anime for years.
Like. Why else would he phrase the sentence like that? Why would he be addressing this topic? The way it's laid out makes it clear that this was said for a reason: the reason being that it's an issue people are still having with queer characters even in modern America just like the censors who created Kissing Cousins back in the day.

A lot of anime took inspiration in Bjorn Andresen as the typical European beauty... he was known from Death in Venice, in which he was the underage gay love interest :)

I think you’re forgetting that in Japan, anime was watched by adults too. Whereas in America, the government perceived anime as cartoons for kids which generally didn’t have strong romantic themes.

There's different types of "progressive" and "conservative". No one's ever thought Japan was anti gay when the US wasn't. Japan is traditional family wise, which is stupidly considered a conservative viewpoint... progressive and conservative are NOT black and white, you can be heavily both at the same time. But extremely stupid people can't see that as a possibility and just see them as complete opposites

These terms have broad definitions but are still fairly consistent intersubjectively. It would be pretty silly to say that America isnt more progressive than Japan from a holistic perspective.

@@ttt5205 When you think about the role of the man and woman in a household and the expectations of those roles, Japan is VERY heavily conservative, compared to the extremely lax USA. People need to realize that when it comes to sexism, racism, and homophobia, the USA is the bottom of the list in all of those compared to most of the world. The US is top 10 most accepting of all variety of viewpoints and lifestyles. Has been for a LONG time. the "Too progressive" part is just the after effects of Christian worries about exposing children to overly sexual themes and that's completely gone in most of the US nowadays.

@@TheShockingShane Im not much of a USA fan but Id still have to admit that the US is fairly progressive as far as lgbtq goes. Japan still doesnt have legal gay marriage and only allowed someone to change their gender just a couple of months ago. The lgbtq movement is also significantly smaller in japan and doesnt have the broad support it has in the west. Saying that the US is at the bottom is also very silly. There are countries where being lgbtq is straight up illegal and you'd be thrown in jail or worse. There is next to none lgbtq recognition in asian countries, a lot of bigotry in many european countries, hungary for example, gay marriage is banned in 30 out of 54 african states as well. The US has already taken steps towards greater inclusion that many countries simply havent, even if conservatives are pushing back.

Voltron was butchered too. They cut Sven's death for US audiences and had him 'disappear/get captured' because they didn't believe kids that young could handle death. Which they later had to add to the show that they eventually found Sven (something that was never in the OG because well, Sven died) which just sort of screwed with the show's storyline.

I remember me and my cousin would race home from work to watch Sailor Moon. At the time next works would only go so far in the show and then restart the series. And we still watched faithfully. I guess some rules had relaxed because when they finally started introducing new Sailors we lost our sh*t. We couldn’t even find Sailor Moon on tapes/DVD at the time. We were so deprived in The States.😩 When we finally saw the relationship between “the cousins” it made no sense and we were perturbed. It would be years later that we would learn it was because they were actually lovers. So much was changed and we didn’t even know. We still loved the show tho. That goes to show how great it was.

I actually recently learned of an inversed version of this Japan did for a western show
As a Transformers fan, the 1990s show "Beast Wars" featured a female Autobot who had a romance with another of the cast, however when the show was released in Japan they changed her gender to male, and tried at first to make their relationship more akin to a pupil and master, but when the overt romanctic overtones and scenes happened they just, left it with all prior context established, which would then lead to the first same sex Transformers relationship
