Lifting & Storing Canna Lilies and Calla Lilies Over Winter ❄️

  • Canna Lilies and Calla Lilies need to be overwintered and you can do this by lifting them in Autumn, washing off all the soil, leaving them to dry off for a week, and then storing them in a box with air holes, somewhere dark and dry such as your garage or shed. I did not lift my canna lilies last Winter and this year they did not do very well. They didn’t grow very tall and they never flowered. So for this video I have followed the correct process and lifted and stored so I have my fingers crossed that next year they will do much better.

      Hello there Naaman, well this was 3 years ago and I’m afraid I cannot even remember what this variety was now, except that it was a gorgeous red flower. Following year I decided to leave them in the ground, as it can be mild enough to do that here, and unfortunately that was the end of my canna lily! This year I planted 4 new varieties from Farmer Gracy called Durban, Monique, Pretoria and Stuttgart, and they didn’t do very well at all. I think I will dig those up, store them and replant them again next year and see what happens. Thanks so much for watching and I hope you’re having a great week 💚🩷

    The leaves look a bit like rubber plant leaves...
    What would happen if you put them in a conservatory?
    Would they keep growing like a houseplant? Or is that a stupid question?
    I like that pot you could grow carrots or potatoes in that. 🙂
    Oh dear another expense or are glasses on Richards hint list lol

    • @TheEnthusiasticGardener
      @TheEnthusiasticGardener  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Steve you are the best compliment giver 😍 I’ve read that of canna lilies are kept above 10 degrees Celsius then they will grow through the winter and even flower but I don’t have anywhere like a conservatory to keep them. And also you can keep them indoors but they need six hours of direct sunlight every day and my bungalow is quite dark inside, I don’t have any south facing windows at all. So thought I’d try the storing method and 🤞 because it was quite a lengthy process but good fun trying it out. The 🐢 tortoise box made me laugh. And yes at least I have my red glasses still but I’m going to try contact lenses out I think, I keep breaking my glasses and it costs a fortune to replace them 🤓 funny how you see a large pot and want to put potatoes in it, and I think it needs flowers 🤣 hope you’re having a great week. I think I’m going to order myself a HotBin, I keep looking at them on Amazon. Expensive, but so are all the bags of compost I keep buying. • @TheEnthusiasticGardener
      @TheEnthusiasticGardener  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Antonius. Thanks for watching. These rhizomes are very tender and susceptible to frost so I am a bit worried that you have planted yours far too early. Of course I don’t know where you live but they like zones 8-11 and the advice if you Google says to plant them in April and they will then grow and bloom in late summer, so I think you should either dig them up and store them for a few more months or move your container somewhere a bit warmer, perhaps in a garage or greenhouse, and then put it back outside again in the Spring. If you Google the Golden Lucifer it explains this. I hope this helps 😍
