i saw his last Chicago recital in the late 80's. What a Sunday afternoon! He sang every major tenor aria. The encores (@least another hour) were all the famous Neapolitan songs ending with "Non ti scordar"- he repeated the chorus 20+ times as people filed down the aisle, filling the stage with gifts of wine, balsamic, cakes, etc. Watching this brought back many memories. I was one of the few non-italians that managed a ticket. Scary Mafia types were everywhere.
@@alexanderehrmann4405 You followed him, --score sheet in hand-- ? Correction: Score sheet in one hand, pitch pipe in the other. Dear me. Listen to Patti who was greatly admired by Verdi, and learn about the error of your ways.
Yes, I remember hearing Bjorling kind description of Bergonzi... no doubt Del Monaco felt the same way as it was he who helped to launch Bergonzi at the Metropolitan. After all, "actions speak louder than words".
No sign of age-related deteriation in his voice whatsoever at that age after a very long career - that alone proofs that he truly was the master of masters !
Can't you hear the wobble and the constriction in the upper half of the range? Or do you believe the constriction is not due to age? If so I agree ,he was constricted even in his late 30's .The wobble however come later.
He was still singing quite well here but the top is not really secure and there are hints of wobble. Like a few other tenors he went on too long but for about 20 years he was right at the very top.
@@tonyashbridge2910 No . He had debuted as a tenor in the very early 1950's and the constriction is already audible in late 1950's studio recordings like La Boheme .This is not 20 years ,it's less than 10 .Singers always do multiple takes in studio with the best released . If Begonzi's best studio take was constricted ,it means he was indeed constricted , the studio techies had some means to manipulate recordings back then but constriction can't be "fixed" . And what we hear here are not hints of a wobble but a full blown wobble
Not a great singer in your estimation then. You are in the minority. His recordings of 31 Verdi Arias made in 1974 are justly famed. As I said he was right at the top for some 20 years. The constriction you refer to was very minor in earlier years and by no means a major issue even in 1974. But I guess we must agree to differ.
@@tonyashbridge2910 I don't know what you consider "great" .Most abused term ever IMO .My first comment was in reply to Ursula's saying there is no voice deterioration to be heard ,not about whatever "greatness" means to you .I can hear the constriction and the wobble and I could hear both for a very long time . As to my being in minority ,fans always say this about people who point out uncomfortable truths .You have a right to your own opinions but not to your own truths .If you want to believe he was at the "top" for 20 years ,whatever top means to you ,and if you believe this is a Verdi tenor ,you probably have never set eyes on a Verdi score . I am certainly not the one to try to disabuse you of both notions ,not worth my time.I will only say yours is a blanket statement as much worth as any blanket statement involving superlatives and a figure rounded up to next multiple of 10 .Fans are very fond of superlatives in conjunction with round numbers
I am slightly irritated with people who harp on his looks! Firstly, there is nothing wrong with him, he had a strong manly face and secondly, we don't go to opera or listen to music to criticize the looks of singers! Anyway, when you love the voice of a opera star, they become goodlooking or beautiful to you! No wonder we have likes of Kaufman being one of the most popular opera stars of today! All people nowdays care about are looks!
During his prime Bergonzi was, IMO, the outstanding stylistic representative for the tenor roles of Verdi. Even though parts such as Radames & Manrico were not ideal for him his musicianship & respect for the Verdian line & dynamics still paid dividends especially in the more lyrical passages. Here he sings from roles in UN BALLO IN MASCHERA & LUISA MILLER that really, I feel, suited him best.
He is in especially good voice here. The impeccable style was always there, of course, but by this time the sound could be somewhat occluded and he flatted a lot on top. Not this night.. Really splendid.
The greatest Verdi-tenor in the second half of the 20th Century :-) Unbeatable in nobility of tone, technique and phrasing. When you've heard Carlo Bergonzi as Riccardo, Manrico, Rodolfo in Luisa Miller or Ernani, you never will hear another tenor. Not del Monaco, Corelli or di Stefano or the other onces like Domingo, Carreras Pavarotti or the very limitated tenors of today like Kaufmann or the husband of Netrebko :-(

What a powerful voice true lyrico spinto no voices match this style these days
the grand seigneur of opera
What an outstanding singing 🙏 And today? Not ONE single italian tenor 🙈
Un tenor que hizo bel canto
Tenor verdiano maravilloso
❤❤❤
Bergonzi starts at 14:00
Thank you
Thank you. :)
Bergonzi is a God. Nuff said.
W Carlo!!!!!!!
brawo
Beautiful singing! I don’t know what people mean by minor criticisms. I love to sing myself and wish I had a 1000th of his technique.
I am completely mesmerized . Now my brain starts to believe that he is handsome.
Yes haha
9:18 The part we all were waiting for.

Ho ascoltato Tutti Grandi /E il migliore VERDIANO e magari il Solo
Bergonzi!!!
SUBLIME
The sound is so Beautiful and the voice makes the sound not the power!!!!!!!!!!
Wow. Short concert
What's the year of this concert?
Ravissant
Someone knows the name of the musical piece that sounds after "ah si ben mio"?
Intermezzo from Cavalleria Rusticana, Pietro Mascagni
The date of concert?
Does anyone know what year this was?
He is in especially good voice here. The impeccable style was always there, of course, but by this time the sound could be somewhat occluded and he flatted a lot on top. Not this night.. Really splendid.
None better.
Not del Monaco, Corelli or di Stefano or the other onces like Domingo, Carreras Pavarotti or the very limitated tenors of today like Kaufmann or the husband of Netrebko :-(
Kaufmann is a different story. How he sings german and french opera and Lieder puts him on another level.
El nivel de Kaufmann es:
Voz engolada y no bella
Volumen normalito
3:00 I didn't know George Lucas plays violoncelo.
😀
