    Just got a new pit bull she’s 4 months and these videos are extremely helpful I learned to really understand my puppy and not be necessary so dominant.. she’s brought me so much joy. But she’s totally took over the couch. trying to re enforce this new rule before it’s a normal thing for her. Thanks so much (: .. I almost wasn’t going to keep her but if I can train her and have fun with her why not (:

    Weimaraners are so damn smart it is stunning! Otto is a replica of one of my last weims. I had them from cradle to my age 60. My last 2 were out of mine lived to ages 17 and 18. I ran a weim rescue and placed about 200. Starbuck was in his 4th home at 18 months he flunked doberman down training. They taught him how to wrestle with humans he won he flunked! One of the best weims I ever met. Starbuck was a 100 pound reiteralm weimar bred by Tom Wilson. So obedient after 2 weeks of proper retraining. I had the neighborhood house. Had about 30 kids here every week. They grew up with starbuck from age 11 they were. Starbuck was 18 months when I brought him here as he was to be put down. He died of congestive heart failure at age 17. Starbuck knew all of the rules of the house. He held all of the children/adolescents to them. If they broke a rule he got me by sitting his big ass down with thunder barking loudly and pawing my wrist. Then led me to the transgression.
    A properly bred weimaraner is just incredible. When I was a very young child I was always at adolph hauserman house when who was one of the original Germans who bred brought them over and bred them. Strong warning to people who watch these videos! These dogs are everything these people demonstrate to you. I had to re home over 200! And was a behavior specialist for this breed. This breed is not daycare doggie! This breed may be much smarter then you are! Listen to this u-turn carefully. You have to be mentally balanced, intelligent and dedicated to a weim. If not look out! I re-homed about 200 of them. They accurately read and intuit a humans every thought. You can fool all the humans around you but you cannot fool a weimaraner. You cannot demand respect from this breed you must command respect. At least on the level 4 to 5's on the German temperament test. They are part doberman and were used by the German police. They hunt big game. That takes people by surprise.

    Hi Zak, our Lab puppy has responded well to this training when we are sat on the sofa or playing on the floor with him but the second we leave the room (even if we are gone for 10 seconds) he will jump up and settle himself down immediately! We’ve never allowed him to sit on the sofa but through curiosity he’s jumped himself up there and found it rather comfy. What’s the best way to break the habit of jumping up on the sofa when we leave the room?

    My inconsistency between cuddling her, and telling her to get down, is my greatest barrier to stopping my Doberman placing her heavy top half of her body on my lap. It’s bad enough if I am trying to watch TV, but worst of all when trying to work on my computer in a swivel chair. It’s hard to reach a keyboard with a “lap” Doberman 😂. I hope this helps me, and Zac saying “you may have to do this 100s of times” is reality I guess.

    This is not working for me. Bailey started jumping on the sofa yesterday. Since then we have gone through, stop (occasionally getting her off the sofa if I wasn’t quick enough), then sit, down, stay, treat. We’ve done it 100+ times. She’s had so many tiny treats it’s astonishing. But all she does is instantly try to get back on the sofa (or coffee table). In exhaustion I’ve put her in time out. But I really feel like I’ve failed :-( She’s just totally not understanding.

    • @utpawn9830
      @utpawn9830 6 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      She has figured out the system. This is one of the risks with reward based training. She knows that every time she gets on the couch she initiates a routine that results in her getting a treat. Even if you do a sit and stay in between as Zak suggests, dogs are clever enough to figure out that the act of jumping on the couch is still the initial trigger of that training routine and ultimately her ticket to a treat.

Or would that just confuse the dog hardcore by being inconsistent in their mind?

    • @TeslaNick2
      @TeslaNick2 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Puppies learn to sleep when we do with time. Dogs are very good at learning routine and patterns. Make you bedtime routine consistent where puppy is concerned so he can learn it quickly. Eventually all dogs learn that night time is quiet time and sleepy time - it just takes a while.
      To get them to play with toys, take your time, try lots of different toys and textures, all shapes and sizes until you find that toy that puppy loves. Be patient, be kind, be encouraging and stick at it.

    At 3:00, what if you can't initially get the dog off the couch? Do you gently pull on the leash/grab the collar? I assume initially "bribing" them off is just going to establish the bad habit of the dog thinking they could just jump off, get the treat, then jump back on?

      Beagle's are not easy to train at all and could be too challenging for a new owner. Why not try a Cocker Spaniel or Cocker Poo ? Males are (in general) better - more laid back and just lower maintenance.

    I mean, do I literally have to carry treats at all times with me to do this? my husky is super smart and she will sometimes jump on the couch just so I can command her to get "off" the couch and give her a treat.

    can you make a video on how to teach your dog to play nicely with other dogs?

    • @petermartin9494
      @petermartin9494 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      First make sure you understand what playing nicely means. Some people may think dogs are viciously fighting when they are in fact playing nicely dog style. Play fighting is natural for dogs, especially puppies. Serious biting or a stronger dog bullying a weaker one is on the other hand not nice and needs to be stopped.

    I have a five year old black lab. She doesn't listen to me when she goes off leash, and now that winter is coming and the water is freezing I'm afraid if I let her off she'll fall in like she has before. She acts like she's a pup, and loves everything. She is also very obedient. Stay. Sit. Lay down. Stop. Heel. Come (To an extent). She'll even stop mid run for me. It's just when we get out in the park she bolts. Plays with the other dogs for 10 minutes then goes off and pretends we're not her owner. She's run into the road multiple times and I'm worried she'll get hit by a car. Any tips. P.s Shes been to puppy school and has had a dog trainer do one on one (with us)

      Doragon don’t let your dog off leash unless they have a reliable recall. You are right they could get seriously hurt or worse. Until your dog is 100% reliable use a long line (20+ ft leash). Work every day on recall. Start easy in a place you know they will come then add distractions and distance while still using a long leash. Later you can practice in fenced areas dragging a leash (no dogs at first). The final test is throwing their favorite toy and while they are running after it tell them to come. They should stop, ignore the toy, and come to you instead. You can also use another dog as the final distraction too. Until they can do that it is not safe to let them be off leash. I know it’s hard to resist letting them run free, but it’s not worth the risk of losing your pet forever 😢

    • @TeslaNick2
      @TeslaNick2 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      So you're almost there. She's responsible enough to be "at liberty" except when other dogs are involved. In which case you need to keep her on a leash or training line until she proves she can handle that level of freedom. I like to graduate dogs from a 6ft lead, to a 15ft line and then onto a 30ft line so the dog gets a sense of progressing.
      You may also find it useful to change the cue word from "come" to something else; "here" if she's habitually ignoring "come". If it's just during those very high arousal times she ignores it, she's probably tuned out anyway and we're simply vapor to her !
      Keep doing what you're doing whilst remembering to keep increasing the "three D's". (D)istance, (D)uration and (D)istraction whilst restricting her freedom until she can handle it.

    So here’s the thing, I have three dogs and I’m getting a new bed but would prefer to keep it dog hair free ... I will be trying this method but my issue is: 1 dog alone - listens, 2or more dogs together - never listen! Lol
    I assume I can teach each dog separately but the moment all three are in the room I fear my command won’t work.
