- I react to Snarky Puppy for the first time with their song Lingus (We Like It Here). Larnell Lewis once again being a drum god with his band of equal musical gods is truly and insane sight/sound to behold! Yeah, Shaun Martin is a hella good keyboardist himself. I've seen some of his solos with Snarky Puppy in other songs. Don't let his two-finger Moog bass playing fool you.

Larnell actually learned the Songs in the plane stepin in for the actual band drummer and there was like one day rehearsal before playing the gig ... How impressed are you now with him... The talent with this dude is out of this world
Yeah, its wild. The documentary is awesome. Snarky puppy juat won a Grammy also.
Larnell is one of the few drummers I think could teach anything to young Yoyoka.
Actually, the story is more wild than that. He landed the same day as the recording and was 2 hours late from the airport as the taxi didn't show up.

Not even a day of rehearsal. He landed like two hours before recording. He learnt it all mid-flight. Insane.
"Why's he laughing?"
The keyboard solo was improvised.
And because Cory was grooving perfectly with Larnell, who was the stand-in session musician for this recording session, because their normal drummer got sick. This was Larnell's audition basically, and he learned the music on the plane to Europe and didn't get time to practice the song. Really, the band hadn't ever played the songs all the way through together, either. They rehearsed bits and pieces in sections but it had to all come together in the recording session.
They won a Grammy for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album this year (not for We Like It Here, but for Live at the Royal Albert Hall), added to the three Grammys they'd won before.
Not to mention that's one of the other keyboardists so I'm sure he was QUITE impressed.
@@rixyl7475 I mean, it’s no wonder. Corey displayed Mozart-level musical intelligence. There were themes, variations of those themes; variations of harmony based on jazz, blues, swing and lounge genres; variations of cadences deeply rooted in classical western theory... the list goes on.
It wasn't entirely improvised. There are four versions of Lingus on the DVD, all with versions of this solo. They're all differnt too though, and this is the probably best.
They play it on tour, and when Cory Henry's doing other stuff, they play versions of it on other instruments, or have guest artists solo it or whatever.

Haha... Larnell, in his band, playing music he knows... No sir-ee-bob. He arrived on a plane, that morning, to sub in for the other drummer who couldn't get a dutch visa. He learnt those tracks ON THE PLANE. ON THE FRICKIN' PLANE. AND FLEW ALL NIGHT. AND RECORDED IT THE DAY HE ARRIVED. Check out the "Larnell Arrives" video my good sir :)
Yeah, Shaun was laughing in disbelief because Cory was just insane. At one point he replicates the solo with the left hand in perfect sync, that's just crazy.
too many people sleep on the fact that he doubled his solo in perfect sync, that shit gets me erry time comming from a sax player.... just insane

I know Corey's played since he could reach the keys on his church's B3, but still-I'm sorry, that guy is from another planet. Doesn't seem like the same planet as Jacob Collier, but I bet they're in the same Solar system.

The second keyboardist Shaun Martin was laughing in disbelief because Cory Henry created that solo as he played it. It was completely improvised. What made the moment more unbelievable was the synchrony between Cory and Larnell because Larnell literally learned the music for this show on the plane ride over. I think this was in the Netherlands or something and he stepped in at the last minute.

Watching new reactions to 'Lingus" is my way of reliving the 1st time I heard it some years ago. Welcome noobs. You'll never be the same again.

Cory and Larnell building on each other is incredible. You can see them raising each other's game. Oh, the other keyboardist was laughing because he has, I dunno, five, six grammys and Cory just spanked him.
You nailed it. When Larnell changed to the cross stick 16th note vibe during Cory's solo, Cory used that to build, then as Cory got more intense Larnell just pushed it up, then so did Cory. They fed off each other. It was watching two musicians just feed each other, both giving each other what they need for greatness.

I’m a Snarky guy, not a metal guy, and I’ve watched more or less every reaction video to Lingus there is. This one is my favourite. The first time I’ve seen someone genuinely watch and listen for the first time and pick up on all the same moments, twists and turns, and fills and these amazing players vibing off one another - just as a fan of this band would. I couldn’t have imagined we’d share any music in common, but there you go! Respect and thanks to you @bryanforcedrums
There are a lot of sub genres of metal, and there are tons of metal bands that share similar rhythmic and melodic complexities as bands like snarky puppy. I know some of it can get a little cringe with screaming and crazy amounts of distortion. I’d suggest giving some of today’s prog metal a listen👌🏼

Me too. Best live experience of my life. But this reaction embodies Larnell's speech at the end of doing Sandman; respect the culture and expression of the music, and don't put yourself in a box.

Cory Henry was the keyboard player for the solo he is known for his genius playing but that was very much a once in your lifetime solo!
I’d strongly suggest checking out Shofukan or What About Me from the same recording session, both great songs with the latter having som mental drums at the end.
Also worth checking out Larnells playing on Zildjan live (along with the many other great drummers there), he really cuts loose with a crazy solo section and the supporting band, Ghost Note, are about half the members of Snarky Puppy but just as obscenely talented!
I saw somebody point out elsewhere that one amazing thing about that keys solo is that he starts doubling it with his left hand. Assuming Corey is right-handed, that means either he's developed his left to where it's equal in dexterity and speed to his right, or his right hand is even faster and more nimble than what he's doing here. That's why the other keyboardist is wigging.
Btw, Corey has a recent funk/soul album out with his own band. The Song Exploder (iirc) podcast did an interview/episode with him about it a few weeks ago.

@@stevehall5128 That left hand stuff is just nonsensical. I mean, how does one even get that good? Of course, the truth is he is a true musical native speaker, having learned music at the same time he was learning to speak, so as intuitively as most people speak, that's how he plays.

ya as amazing as they all are, I almost can't listen to the other Lingus recordings from this same session just because it doesn't have this solo. Really says something about it.
This is a generational performance, in my book. Everyone with their hands on an instrument there at the very top of their game, and the standout solo is truly transformative. The harmonic progressions are next-next level and the technique required to double that kind of speed and melodic precision with his non-dominant hand is...well, it's quit-inducing. Why try?!?

I've seen this vid countless times, and i am still amazed at their performance! To watch YOUR genuine amazement was a joy.
Larnell's the only drummer alive that can keep up with Cory. Totally insane levels of musicianship.
I've seen/heard Lingus a million times at this point, but I'm still amazed at:
1. The technical team, giving everyone in the room a set of headphones and filming everything with multiple cameras
2. The fact that the musicians know such intricate music by heart, without having to sight-read music (and that the trumpet solo is apparently filtered through a guitar pedal)
3. Larnell, but also the other percussionists who fill out his sound
4. Corey,'s masterful solo, often improving the same part with both hands at the same time
6. Michael, for writing such amazing grooves
Listen to the entire album; it's magic in a bottle that even they won't be able to reproduce.
It's one of the most exciting and energetic compositions I've ever heard, I never get sick of it.

Larnell was a last-minute replacement for this show because their regular drummer had visa issues. He learned all the songs on the flight to the Netherlands.

And to add to your comment, the entire album was written in 4 days. They started on Thursday and recorded this on Monday.

The piece has a light, deft feel to it until the sax kicks in with that flare and everything jumps to a new level.

You have no evidence to show that someone just naturally has more skill, because you do not get to this level without absurd amounts of practice, even with talent. The fact that people believe so much in talent is kind of sad and the only reason the belief exists is because people don't experience the time investment it takes, they only experience the results. It's a poisonous idea that causes a lot of people to give up on things because they expect instant gratification and if it doesn't happen, well , guess I just wasn't "talented" enough.

This is how Snarky performances go. Top tier musicianship, always in sync with each other. Michael League runs the performance, and one of the ways he keeps everyone involved and on their toes is the players don't know who is to play the soloes until a few bars before. He just gives them a nod. That way they are always tuned in and engaged. The membership fluctuates somewhat, with players moving in and out based on availability. They record most of their performances, and make them available for download in FLAC files by the next day. They are on the website for purchase, you can see the lineups and get different personnel for a different take.

Jazz is like metal in that there are so many amazing fantastic subgenres. Like, if you like progressive metal, you're probably also going to like progressive jazz fusion.
Musician reactors usually like to dissect techniques, some music theory sprinkled in, a quick discussion on what "in the pocket" means, etc etc. But with SP, and this tune in particular, there's too much going on to do that very effectively. Loved the honest reaction; your face said it all.
Larnell actually learnt all the drum parts in the cab drive from the travel Inn to the studio, and apparently it was only a 10 minute drive, and the cab driver was listening to Ariana Grande.
The cab driver was also loudly crunching on a Taco Bell Fiery Doritos® Locos Tacos Supreme®

All I can say is that I totally feel your reaction as a musician. I’m like they are so locked in and from what I understand Larnell had just joined the band and is apparently a quick study. A whole band of geniuses!!

Whenever I see a Snarky Puppy Lingus reaction vid I watch and hold my breath to see is the reactor is as blown away as I am. Every single time.
Its all great stuff from Snarky Puppy. The video of Outlier at this session has a lovely moment when the sax player headphones slip off and distract him from his solo. Larnell fills in in less than a heartbeat to cover. If you were just listening you wouldn't notice a thing. Absolutely on fire and in the moment with each other. I get the impression that Larnell's last minute addition to the session totally transformed it for everybody concerned. Massive talent in that room but, more importantly, a huge amount of joy along with it.

I am so happy....all of you musicians were BORN, I really do. I love you guy's parents, for birthing such amazing musician specialists into this mundane world of hell. Life became tolerable from just experiencing this intricate musicianship and master class contribution. I don't understand why music does to the brain and spirit as it does. But I NEED it and can't balance out my life without it. It's another language another form of LOVING someone if thee creators want it to be. For my mental health.....please stay safe and healthy.

Larnell and Corey were “talking” to each other on another plane of reality. That conversation went to the netherworld....they were in the moment reacting to each other’s spirit. Something that is rare and special. What it must have been to witness it live.

During Corey’s solo on the keyboard, the guy next to him took his headphones off and laughed because that section of the solo was improvised.

Larnell is indeed a “machine,” a machine that is literally driving the pace of the brass - as is evident at these time stamps - as well as the keyboard solo with a ridiculous amount of syncopation. By the 9-minute mark, this has become an entirely different composition, always at the brink of spinning out of control - BUT! It never does.

Hey, Bryan - I just watched the Snarky Puppy documentary on youtube, and thought you might be as blown away as I was to learn that they wrote these songs on a Thursday and recorded them on the Sunday. Yeah, Cory Henry's solo here was like a Bach level improvisation. While it was his third pass at it this time around the chemistry between Larnell, the fill in drummer for this session who learned most of this set on the 7 hour flight to Europe, and Cory pushed them both to new heights.
The guy shaking his head and taking off his headphones is a Grammy winner who knew he just saw a once in a generation performance.
