    My youngest son and I did something similar. We originally had a similar roof. However after a particularly bad gale the roof leaked. Cured this by fitting galvanized corrugated metal sheets. The shed is now bone dry. Got a hardwood door and a double glazed window for free at our local recycling centre. Great satisfaction building it ourselves.

    I put a EPDM roof on my 8m x 15m workshop 12 years ago. Superb quality and very easy to fit even for a first-time DIYer. It was so heavy my dad and I couldn't lift it onto the roof! We had to rig an old winch and make a slide out of an old wooden ladder. The EPDM still looks brand new. I'm very pleased with it

    • @tlangdon12
      @tlangdon12 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I had the same issue and used two aluminium ladders as slides and two ratchet straps to pull the roll up the ladders. I looped the ratchet straps around the roll and took both ends of strap onto the roof. Standing on one end and pulling on the other allowed me and my daughter to roll the EPDM up the ladders so that we weren't dragging the roll, which might have torn it.

    Great build Keith. I used that exact roof system on the garden office I build (which I used a SIPs construction method for), and you’re right; it’s so easy and great quality.
    A note of caution with folding in that return in the EPDM rather than cutting it off as you should: rain will wick around underneath it and sit on the timbers. It will also, over time, find its way through the nail holes and into the soffits.

    I had decided that you had donated your "Lucky Shorts" to the thrift store or that your wife had convinced you throw them away. Now, I know that the shed will turn out well with the power of good luck on your side.

    Interesting project, thank you Keith. Just a couple of things about the roof. Firstly, I think it's better to run a length of roof batten (typically 25 x 50) along the roof edge taking the gutter. This ensures the water runs off clear of the roof line into the centre of the gutter (more or less). Secondly, when fixing the corner plates and joint covers, only fix one side with adhesive, not both as the trim needs to be able to expand and contract.

    I really like the rubber roof, this is a great option for longevity and I like that you gave the roof an overhang as this will help a bit to reduce water hitting the sides.
    I am sure your brother is well pleased with the outcome and you managed to get it all done on a tight budget too. Great job.

    I put EDPM on my 4x3m shed approx 15 years ago and it's still like brand new. Yes it's expensive upfront but pays back by never needing to be done again. About the only complaints I have is that it really does heat the shed up in the summer (if in sunlight) and wear old clothes if you need to get up there, it sheds a black dust even after all this time.

  • @YesiPleb
    @YesiPleb 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    This is EXACTLY what I'm looking at building in our new garden soon when we move and get settled. I want to move the existing shed up the top of the garden and build this in its place. Been researching what to put down as a foundation. It's got a massive Bramley apple tree that'll be overhanging so it'll be handy for something to stop the apples smashing onto the floor as well as a platform for me to climb up to pick the apples.

    Very smart looking and well made shed! I've been interested in these rubber roofs but always thought they would suffer from UV exposure (if you have ever left a vehicle sat outside for a few years you'll know what I mean with tyres). The 50 years seems unbelievable! GRP is often expected to last as little as 20 years on the low end (obviously much longer is possible).

    The more I see about that type of roofing, the more I like it! I was going to use it on my workshop roof originally. The only thing that stopped me was turning up some "slight seconds" insulated roof panels for cheap on marketplace. It's roughly a 12 x 42 foot roof, so had to go with the cheapest option I could. The roof I was replacing had been on there since it was built in 1960, and had only failed due to the ivy that had taken over. We removed *lots* of it. Hopefully the current roof will see me out!
    My next garden building project is going to be a clock tower on the shed roof, because I can 😂 I have been toying with putting a small epdm flat roof at the top of the tower. Not sure yet though

    Great job Keith, and excellent to see some teamwork from the Brown clan, not too many Chuckle-brother moments either, I can really see the family resemblance !
    From my experience 2x4s are plenty for an 8ft span especially with structural OSB pulling the whole thing together, having the centre wall will certainly help stiffen up the whole structure though !
    Overall an excellent result and great value for around £2k, with the material choice and attention to detail on the build it should last for many years !
    Nice to hear from your Niece again "Keefy", what a great uncle to have ! 😉
