  • FIXED: Poor spade connector connection to the starter motor. Just clean it and stick it back on.
It's just started doing this, the engine or whatever won't respond to me turning the key. I can bump start it, but that's annoying and embarrassing. If I leave it for a bit after it's done this it occasionally turns over. My guess is electrics, as when it does turn over it doesn't sound weird, and it's kind of random.

I updated the description a while back. It was a poor connection to the starter motor. Just clean the spade connector.

My clio does the same thing , after watching your video and reading comments below i did fix the problem it was loose connection to starter motor , thanks to video maker and people posting the comments :)

I know this is an old video but some of these comments are driving me up the wall.
If the car isn't even turning over stop suggesting its the Crankshaft sensor or fuel related. No wonder Joe Public gets fleeced by garages.
In 90% of intermittent starting cases where its not turning over it will be the connector to the starter motor is corroded, or the earth wire from battery to body or engine block to body is corroded at point of contact or its one of the ignition relays in the fuse box is faulty or corroded at its connection.
If you find corrosion in the fuse box, strip it, clean all terminals and protect as best you can.
If the car just 'clicks' on turnover and doesn't start, that 90% goes up!

Mine was once in a week or two, playing with a fob and lock, starts until next week, after seeing this video when ever this happens I push little and it starts until today nearly broke my leg as I push it alone over 4 times,I decided to visit to the garage and was quoted £105 everything local £145 Halford ,did not change after I fuel did the same thing, waited for AA 3 hours none came so I disconnected the little cable in the starter and also hitting the starter about 6-7 times,it fires up now Parked over the hill away from home so it is easier for me to bring the children to school with a little push until I sort out the starter.

Mine was the ground on the starter, when I turned it over there was no crank at all! Also the car would turn on as such, like radio and stuff! So a quick clean of the spade connector and it strikes up perfectly!!

    Hi
my clio 1.4 16v (2002) does the same thing!! Used to be once in a while but now getting more frequent -- very annoying.
i kept blaiming the immobeliser but the red dot flashes on/off in a normal paste and think is not the immobliser.
recently, i started to blame the starter motor because if I keep the key on ignition position and turn the key on - then at same time ask my dad to tap the starter moter = it does start
alternativly pushing the car does start the motor as well. So does this not rule out any immobeliser issue!?
car battery is ok I believe becaus everything else works, otherwise would notice a lack of electric when using the windows etc.
never the less, must say the starter motor is in a crap position! would be a pain to get it out :((
anyway would be great if u guys share your experiences and fixes
    cheers

recently car was in crash nothing major just body work but driver seat
airbag went off so iv put a seat from a 5 door clio into my 3 door clio
.... and i have a knew airbag ecu module to be fitted but have not
fitted it yet ... with the knew seat i still have airbag light and serv
light come on ..... but what my problem is my car wont start before i
had no problems i go to turn the key into second position and the
immobiliser light stays steady red so when i bypass that and make it go
if i go try again it just does it again aswell as clock reset and dash
board read out mpg and how many miles since last reset but if i attach
jump leads and bypass the immobiliser it starts first time and if the
engine cuts out i am able to start the car from the ignition its only
when i leave it over night and go try and start it does immobiliser stay
red again and i have to bypass and reset clock

Well when my car wouldn't start after a battery change, an AA recovery guy said I had an alarm fitted in my car, it was hidden under/behind the glovebox. He showed the extra wiring, anyhow to not mess with that, he just had a thick gauge of wire that he place on the live end of the battery and directly to the live end of the starter motor (or is it the alternator - the bit with the visible auxiliary belt) and that did the trick.

And After you gave him a new starter
let him work because the tries with the ignition is bad for the battery and she probably will be nearly empty

It could be your engine immobilizer system.
Check if the circular red light goes off when you turn the key to the second click.
If it is still flashing then your engine immobilizer is active.
