Thanks for posting this really good info, and I can truly tell you ,That’s everyone’s curse is going back to your old eating patterns, the only thing I battle now is trying to change and stay with a beneficial diet ,I’m 3 years post Nissan Fund/Hiatal Hernia surgery and I have to say this procedure is the best thing I ever did, over 40 years of suffering with GERD and just like you, I used to get heartburn so bad late night I thought I was dying ,I’m sure you can relate. The only side effects I have from the procedure is, like you mentioned the bloating, gas, all the internal stomach intestinal noise occasionally that sounds like a 5 gallon water jug at a busy office, but I can honestly say I have not had Heartburn one time since my surgery, and to me that alone is worth doing it, to anyone on the fence about doing this procedure , trust me it makes the quality your life a whole lot better. The only regret I have is not doing it sooner!

I am 5 days post hiatal hernia repair/Toupet fundoplication surgery(270 degree wrap). The surgery itself isn’t as painful as one would think. I was able to burp soon right after surgery. The most painful part is the residual gas they used during surgery. I didn’t need pain meds once I left the hospital which was a day later. I am now eating shredded chicken, potatoes and noodles. How you recover is based on the individual. You can’t go by anyone else’s experience.

    I’m posting this on 12/22/2022.
I had my surgery in 2008. It helped a lot but not 100%. By trial and error over years, I discovered I actually didn’t produce enough acid. So I started taking betaine hydrochloride with pepsin if I felt heartburn coming on. That significantly helped me.
I can very minimally burb on occasion so gas x is a must. I had a stomach bug only once, and not being able to throw up, didn’t help matters.
Thankfully 95% of the time I function well. My heartburn is sharp pain in the esophagus and not so much the burning sensation.
Hope all continues to go good for you and anyone who’s had to deal with this.

@@ajinc3730 Just getting back. Well, surgery ok but its 11 months and I have issues with digestion, not heartburn. Seems the food stays around a while, atleast it feels that way. Symptoms, some burning, tired, little weakness, discomfort after eating and can not gain any weight. I can not gain 1 lb after even after 11 months. I want to gain some more muscle and fat and I can not.
The doctor says I need to stay on the carefate and PPIs but I will not take them. And also Gas-x which also bothers me. I have burping and gas right after eating another symptom.
Ive heard about over production of stomach acid, but you never hear about low stomach acid. You need acid to break down your food, kill bacteria and digestion. Anyway, the search for answers continues but the actual surgery was ok but 10 days ago this all started and the doc also said the nissan wrap could have slipped , whatever that means.
      Will update.

    Thanks for sharing your story.
I've been having digestion issues since birth - anxious & lazy stomach, tending to vomit from any kind of stressful situation. I've been living with hiatal hernia and GERD symptoms since about 20 (I'm now 42).
When I feel heaviness in my stomach, I want to drink something acidic, like cranberry juice. That helps my digestion a lot; I usually burp afterward and then don't feel the heaviness anymore.
However, about 10 years ago I started having heartburn. So, that made things more complicated. When I feel the heaviness in the stomach, I have to make a choice: do I want to risk getting into a vomiting loop (it's hard for me to stop when it starts, I vomit like 10 times in an hour) or do I better drink something acid and have heartburn afterward.
I also considered surgery, but doctors could not convincingly explain to me which of my symptoms were caused by GERD and my hernia and which ones were caused by some other issues I've been having since birth. So, I did not want to risk having even more symptoms from the surgery. Now I have to fight all of my symptoms pretty often. But I find that weekends are much easier, I don't even use PPI and antacids every day. For me dumplings and pasta are a big no-no - those can cause heartburn almost every time.

For example, I could eat the same kinds of meals for a few weeks without problems and then suddenly one day I would have an awful burning or feeling of heaviness. So, the best thing I could was to notice and avoid specific foods that caused problems for sure. Essentially, I avoid fat and spicy foods, foods with soft-ish sticky dough (pasta, dumplings), and carbonated drinks. Everything else works fine for me for most days.

So, I could have boiled french fries without issues 😀 But I don't buy french fries or prepared meals anyway, I have potatoes and raw meat at home always, so I can prepare something at any time. I don't even consider it a diet because I grew up in a rural area where it was a normal lifestyle.

Glad my updates help. My quality of life is about 80% better only because I still do get heartburn but it’s no where near as bad as it used to be. I can sleep flat or on my right side although my left side does cause me issues. My stomach does feel differently than before especially when I’m bloated. Do I wish I was “cured” yes but I’m way better off than before

I had this 21 years ago and it still works .can’t burp or puke lol but Fart. Miss drinking Fizzy drinks and a cold beer as I can’t burp. Sometimes need to take omeprazloe as this acid stays in stomach and makes the pain return between shoulder blades and chest but it goes after a couple of days of taking it.

I have a hiatal hernia and have been getting EXTREME 10/10 pains in my chest/area of the hernia after I eat or if I sit. It literally feels like a heart attack. The sudden pain/pressure/stabbing in the area lasts until I get up and walk around grabbing at it and gasping in agony. I don't know if anyone else has had this but I may need surgery. I am terrified of it though as I have heard it can tear/rupture and that you can't puke. "I get car sick, motion sick and sick in general and throw up more than most people" so this is to me horrible :(
Did you go through any of those things? Can you puke? I do not have too bad of reflux, tums usually works for me but the sudden throbbing pain attacks are too much. I lose my vision sometimes they are so painful :(

    • @kivsanchez811

I get the chest pains pretty bad too. Sometimes I feel like I am having a heart attack. I have noticed that drinking water and lying down for a bit makes it go away. Still awful. I am going to try a chiropractor as I have seen videos of having good success with it. But of course, not all Chiropractors are good and the ones that I have seen post their successes are US based (Im in Australia). If only I lived in Ohio near the Baker Chiropractors place.

It sounds like you're having indigestion. I get that occasionally in addition to my frequent heartburn. It's like waves of intense and tightening sensations. The only food trigger I can for sure say gives me indigestion is green peppers. Also eat slowly and methodically. Tums usually helps it go away. Either that or just not talking and gentle breathing and swallowing. I've dealt with it since I was little but for people whose first experience with indigestion is in adulthood, it can be frightening because it feels like it could be a heart attack. But rest assured it's just your poor stomach all angry.
