Semi-permanent host could be a good option. Another option I can think of is have a region or continent share the hosting then have rotation of hosts regions. If the ioc don't change their business model in the next 8-10 years they are legitimately done imo. The illusion of profit is gone and the prestige of hosting the olympics as well to the point where cities don't even have to compete to get the games since not enough cities are trying to even host them. Either they remove a lot of sports so that less infrastructure needs to be built, which wouldn't be appreciated by fans and athletes of those sports, or they split the competitions to multiple close host cities or maybe even host countries like the world cup for example does. Either way something needs to change asap

This explains a lot why 2 weeks ago flight tickets for Paris were cheaper than any other country in Europe. It didn't hit me the Olympics would have such a negative impact nobody would want to travel.
Excellent video. As someone living in Brisbane I already feel down about 2032. In recent months the local government changed their minds and doesn't want to spend the money to host a great Olympics. Yet the current stadiums are in serious need of upgrading. I think there should be a legacy element to the games. Infrastructure invested needs to support the future. I hope we can turn things around.
So lovely to see you had a great experience with Parisians. It’s not often shown in English content so this kinda content is always refreshing to see (also I’m French so I’m biased lol)
Boston almost considered bidding for this year and, considering I had to wait over 40 minutes for the train yesterday even though the north half of that train is shut down, and seeing our traffic... thank GOD we didn't.
London did get a fair bit of that money back after the land was sold off after the Olympics and the Olympic village was sold as flats. But yes it was a major loss leader. London had a legacy vision and it has predominantly come to fruition. Some of the venues were altered and reused, some were taken down and erected elsewhere in the UK. A crew were temporary, and others like the O2 and Excel were already built. I hope Paris has the same sort of legacy. At least a lot of the venues were built already like Stade de France etc.
One part that is overlooked is the amount of people who are hired for this giant gig. Just in broadcast alone about 500 professionals travel to Paris and they need places to stay and food to eat. I think it has more to do with how the French are as they don't like this type of event, they don't like crowding and chaos. Living in Toronto and seeing the French complain about construction made me laugh hysterically. We are constantly under construction and are not hosting anything, none of the constructions happening now have anything to do with the 2026 WC.
Also people who are not hired. The Games are relying on 20,000 unpaid volunteers to work for billionaires. Maybe they believe it will bring them prestige. It just makes them fools.
@@nedludd7622 Of course volunteers do not get paid, as not getting paid is implicit in the definition of the volunteer. Nobody forces anyone to donate their time. So, while you may think the 20,000 to whom you refer are fools that is simply your opinion. Those who volunteer obviously think otherwise and, since anyone volunteering doesn’t impact you, why is your negative opinion of volunteers relevant to anybody but yourself?

According to the US Census Bureau, only 22% of people speak a language other than English. So 30% of people knowing English is already way higher than Americans counting all second languages. The french knowing any foreign language goes up to 44%. So no, "Learn English" doesn't seem fair. Maybe everyone should try to learn another language.
Nonsense. The Census provides statistics on what languages people speak AT HOME, that is, their langue maternelle. It doesn't even provide any information on languages people have learned, certainly not to the incredibly low standard of the Parisiens in the video.
@@nineteenfortyeight look fight with the Census Bureau's of each country, not me. I'm just stating facts. Let's all remember why the olympics started in the first place. It's a war game, designed to showcase warriors. THAT used to be the sell for the nations, people were afraid to invade you if you did good in the games.
Sure , that i don't hate the Olympics , but the IOC simply cannot stay in outdated business model and should make a really impactful regulation update and they also have to adapt with changes as sports scene would be never a stagnant scene
Good vid, it's a shame that so many cities just see no benefit from the Olympics, London is a slight exception, Stratford got a lot of development and loads of venues are being used still

This scares me cuz it’s coming to LA next 😭 it’s already expensive enough here, I hope LA realizes the economic threat the Olympics can pose and actually prepare. All I know is at the moment they are pouring tons of money into the metro to make the public transportation more efficient. Not much of the population density lives near the lines though..
This is such a well-produced video. I can see that you clearly researched the topic well, and allowed locals to represent that data as well. You earned a subscriber :)
The London olympics inspired alot of people who had never played sports to get into sports! Even years after the event It also blew up alot of olympians careers as youtube stars, of which I still watch regularly today. The opening and closing ceremonies still amaze me even now, the planning, choreo, design, the image of the chimneys and the rings going up, all the mary poppins flying down to save the day, it was amazing. The saddest part however was that the building was taken down instead of repurposed.. its now just blocks of flats 😢
I don’t think I’ve ever ever posted a comment like this but straight up that was such a great impactful video. Just got to the point, but also got a strong message across wow being impacted with facts and other others feelings. I love what you just summed up at the end because you actually gave ideas on how to make it better in the future. perfect A+.
My suggestion is they pick 4 PERMANENT cities for the WINTER games and the 4 for the SUMMER games that will rotate between cities and each host city should reside in hemisphere of the globe ... The benefits with this system is obviously the Olympic Village, Stadiums, infrastructure etc. will be be already established and not need to be built from the ground floor up every fours years!!! And for the North & Western quadrant I suggest LA!!!
Los Angeles actually made a small profit hosting the Olympics. They did this by using existing facilities, and putting up the athletes in college dorms. They actually used the stadium built in the 1930s-perfectly good. If managed correctly, the games can be staged at a reasonable cost. The problem is that local politicians all want to get rich-they get graft and kickback$$ buy having the national government pay to put up the white elephant buildings. Look at Rio de Janeiro and Athens-both built enormous venues that are now unused and rotting away. Hosting the Olympic games is basically a way to launder money
LA made in profit on the 1984 Games while funding 100% of the cost of the Games frim private sources; no government / taxpayer money was used to fund any part of the Games. The same is also the case for the 2028 LA Games being funded from private sources. I know that LA using private sources and generating a profit contradicts this video’s narrative of all Olympic Games going wildoy over budget and generating losses, but some mention of LA’s experiences in hosting the Games would have added objectivity to the narrative in this video.
i think if people cant figure out how to make the olympics financially and environmentally sustainable and good for the host cities we should just stop having them. my personal suggestion is choosing a different city for each event (or maybe grouping them together or something so all the swimmers and divers are in the same place. idk). and that way one city doesnt have to bear the brunt of hosting the olympics and construct the olympic village and spend billions on new facilities. it might feel a bit different but at least it wont bankrupt every city that hosts
Queenslander's DID NOT want the Olympics, but we now have to suffer with Brisbane 2032. The other country also dropped out. Our hospitals and schools are suffering and could desperately use the money (public health system). And half of our state's population will not see any benefit because we are 1600km (994 miles) away from Brisbane. They are saying they will use existing stadiums, with minimal upgrades, but we will see. It was kind of funny that the Politician who wanted it appointed herself the head of 2032 games committee before she quit politics. Nice cushy job with none of the backlash when the games come.
Good video! Very entertaining and informative. My mom and I have just been discussing this before I came across your vid and I seriously thought the Olympics was bringing the host countries some sort of profit bec why would they bid for it in the first place? Turns out it’s actually the opposite. I think there should just be permanent locations for specific events (all swimming events in one place, all track events in one, etc) so we don’t waste all these buildings, stadiums, infrastructure. For the opening, maybe they can hold it all together in one place (different each time) so athletes can all gather in one location to celebrate but then they leave for their specific locations after.
fire vid bro, actually blown away by the quality! (and thanks to you and ken for being willing to talk to me that one day in paris, it really meant a lot!)
What timing! My family and I just came back from our Paris Visit! We where there a week before the games started, and I can totally see what they meant by decreasing turism. Being a turist sucked for us. No matter all the research we did we just didnt know about the QR codes until it was too late. Also for such a huge city, the center was unusually empty, like new york on a tuesday levels of activity. Thank you for your report! Wonderfull video.
So nice to see the French people communicating with you…I wanna come visit the Riviera. They can have different countries host different games…basketball can be played in America, hockey can be played in England ….
I think you should also show in your video what Paris does different than for example Athens. The beach volley arena, Versailles arena etc are all temporary stadiums. Some months after the games there will be empty locations again and no unused stadiums. The swimming arena hosted the Taylor Swift concerts in may 2024 and will be used again for ther events and as a rugby stadium. The athletics stadium Stade de France was built for the 1998 world cup in football/soccer, used for 2016 euro cup etc. The tennis stadiums existed already and are used every year for the french open etc. So I think they really learned from other citys to not have unused venues after the games. 👍
I’ve always thought that the Olympic committee who makes billions of dollars off of their ad revenue, but they don’t have to share with any of the athletes. Should take that money and buy a good size island, Mount Olympus, and build all the facilities they’ll need. Then host countries can just come in and decorate it Will save them a huge amount of money and being in international water not be associated with anyone country. That way you still get host countries showing off their culture without the terrible expense.
I dont think that is the worst part about it. There has been real awful injustice when hosting the games. For example, before the Olympics in Mexico 1968 there were A LOT of student protests and it all culminated on October 2nd when in a huge student manifestation the government sent the army to "control the groups" because they couldn't afford to make them look bad in front of the whole world. Its one of the darkest moments, I'm not sure about the numbers but Wikipedia says there were 300-400 deaths in the hands of the army, also more than 1,000 injured. And all of this because of the Olympics that were hosted less than 1 month later as if nothing had happened. That's why 2 de octubre no se olvida.
I thought this video was gonna talk about the same points of Search & Party's video, that I just watched, but the approach is totally different and you giving a different point of view by being in Paris and interview locals about the situation.
Also lots of people watch it via tv channels instead of coming to paris due to the accessibility of tv channels Also lots of swimmers ended up extremely sick after swimming and one of them ended up at the hospital
Years ago I lived in a condo in Colorado that was built for athlete housing for Olympics that never happened. Denver won the Olympics bid and then decided against it for the 1976 Olympics. The complex was called Aspen Shadows, but everyone locally called it Aspen Guettos. It was not really guetto, this was a tourist town in an expensive area. They were really small and poorly built. You could not really fit a full size bed in the bed rooms. The roof blew off on one of the buildings when I lived there during a wind storm. The complex is still there and actually very expensive to own a condo there now because everywhere in that area is expensive. This was in Silverthorne Colorado, it would of been the Winter Olympics.
I loved this video ! I am actually doing research right now about Sport Diplomacy in relation to the Olympics for my college work, so this was an amazing watch ! Really looking forward to watch more of your content ❤
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Utah is the exception to the rule. They actually did turn a profit, from what I understand. I think this was due to using available resources where possible (used University of Utah's football stadium for the opening ceremonies, etc) and maybe because Utah was not as toursity as a place like London or Paris, so it actually did bring in tourists. I would be interested in a further breakdown!
"Dark side no one knows about" literally everybody knows and talk about it all the time. The public is the one who pressured cities to withdraw their bids due to budget concerns.
I am glad someone is finally talking about the immense cost of making an Olympic facility. Everyone has already forgottebe scrapped. The rituals, the infairness, adn the drain on resources is nothing but damaging.n about the poor people who were thrown out of their metal huts to host the Rio de Janeiro games. I thin your permanent host solution is good. Paris and LA should already be set up in theory. Personally, I think the whole idea should
Oh, you should have come to the nort-east suburb, we have thoughts on the Olympics ! Over here, "preparing for the olympics" meant a ton of social cleansing, forcefully moving homeless people, destroying a shelter and pressuring people to move out of their homes to build the olympic village, destroying community gardens to build a stupid pool... We feel spat on by the whole thing, like we poor people are a stain to wash off before tourists arrive. When the reason they built the olympic village over here in the first place is because it's the cheapest real estate around Paris.
My city recently hosted a big hockey tournament. we heard it was gunna bring money to the downtown area cause that’s where the event center is. No our entire city barley got money from the event and our Walmarts even upgraded to the 2024 stores (which I hate by the way it’s awful) cause they thought our city was gunna get more money from the hockey teams & tourism. But it went to the city that was already knows for its tourism it’s a German themed town and I can’t deny it’s a cool designed town but damn did it fuck our city over I could not imagine it on a country level
The facilities from the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City are all being used, they are not rotting away. There are plans to expand some of those same facilities for the 2034 Olympics.
I’ve always loved the Olympics and the 2000 Sydney games were the first ones I really remember as a child. So when I got the chance to visit a few years ago and saw the Olympic Stadium and it was vacant and kind of run down (I won’t say it’s totally abandoned because I’m not sure if they still use it for events) it was honestly pretty sad.
As a person who actually lives in Paris, for sure businesses like hotels and restaurants haven't been profiting from the Olympic games unlike what was usually promised. But what the people in the video forget to talk about is also how bad it was for all the people that may not be in a comfortable financial situation in the first place. First we have the workers that built all the facilities, a lot of them have been injured or even died in the process. Then the homeless that were staying in the center of the city where all the office workers, tourists, etc are to get money were all relocated to farther areas outside of Paris so as to "clean" the city off its poverty and look better for the world to see. In the same fashion, low income families, often with children, as well as students, where massively evicted from their homes to house more policemen for the Olympics. All of them either had to find a new and more expensive apartment in a hurry, or would end up in the streets. Also, students had been complaining for years about cockroach infestations, mold, electricity and water issues in their apartments and no one batted an eye, but when it's the policemen who complain about it, suddenly they made sure to clean everything out. All of that and many other things happening on top of a VERY difficult time politically with the rise of far-right movements over the country making the people divide between far-right and left activists. You can check that and other things out easily on the internet, just thought it would be interesting for people to know that on top of what was already said, which is also very accurate that's for sure !
i wouldve FINALLY went to Paris this year after leaving Germany but considering my nana has mobility issues it was out of the question with how difficult the olympics would make it for her to take her time as usual
So, that explains some of the disasters going on! Problem is that the issues are occuring DURING the Olympics instead of afterwards, more so than any other Olympic locations.
Alright Tejas im starting the video you better not cost me my job by the end

The illusion of profit is gone and the prestige of hosting the olympics as well to the point where cities don't even have to compete to get the games since not enough cities are trying to even host them. Either they remove a lot of sports so that less infrastructure needs to be built, which wouldn't be appreciated by fans and athletes of those sports, or they split the competitions to multiple close host cities or maybe even host countries like the world cup for example does. Either way something needs to change asap
“Really excited because I think it’s gonna be a mess” 😂😂😂😂
Ecstatic? Paris Olympics: Messi top to bottom
I read this exactly when he said it. I like it when that happens 😊
Honestly he isn’t wrong. Same reason I was excited for the World Cup, Qatar is a restrict country, however during the World Cup everyone went nuts and the government freezes some laws for the occasion. Celebrations everywhere everyday even inside the metro which was my favourite since I use the metro to commute to and from work when I normal days you will be arrested.
My mess maybe different from others 🙂
The combo of sit-down explainer and on the ground interviews is edited together well Tejas. I hope one day I can meet you or collab man, keep going :)
Appreciate it a ton!
The Parisians are just too down-to-earth to be fooled
You misspelled cynical
@@realistic_delinquent I don’t see cynicism being the main philosophy in Paris, although it’s definitely rampant
@@metalblind95yeah I’d say down to earthiness is more prominent than cynicism
They're just not ignorant. America could learn a lot from France.
Bro the Kanye “****** in Paris” cut was hilarious 3:38
YUP AND WE ARE WINNING EVERYTHING😂
I was in Paris last month and I was super surprised by the fact I that I haven't seen promised crouds of tourists, I haven't seen garbage on the streets and Parisians are actually super nice and such an interesting people to be around
I have no idea if it was due to the Olympics, but I loved it to be there (even with all the construction work)
I agree! I was there last month and loved my visit there. ❤
‘Only 30 percent of French people know English. Learn English people’ hahaha love this. You’re in France!
Exactly!!!! Americans 🤦🏻♀️

@@meinctutw8261 it’s not the point and yes I learn to be able to communicate in the language of the country I visit! It’s more the entitlement of expecting people to speak their language!
Agree
@@nedludd7622 if you're a student and need some experience on your resume, I see nothing wrong.
The mayor swam in the river? Anyone want to do the joke? Anyone? ANYONE? any takers? No? OK, I'll do it. "He's insane"😂

Honestly you saying that Paris wasn’t ready to host checks out from all the mistakes and controversies from the opening ceremony (mis-naming S. Korea with N. Korea, the “Lord’s Supper” incident, etc.)
And also the games themselves with doping from China and also a controversial women's boxing event at the moment too, with a lot of issues on both sides of arguments.
@@f1champ551 My goodness, the issues are just piling up smh
@@HiddenTalent_07 then the winter Olympics as well have issues as well if there are any new venues lining up after the Italy one in 2 years as well... Yeah, there business strategy overall for both Winter and Summer Olympics needs a MAJOR overhaul.
@@f1champ551 HUGE 😭. They need a new management team for sure bc I’m worried future Olympics will just be next to impossible to bring into existence and soon the games will be nothing but a memory in history :,(
What’s the Lord’s Supper incident?
According to the US Census Bureau, only 22% of people speak a language other than English. So 30% of people knowing English is already way higher than Americans counting all second languages. The french knowing any foreign language goes up to 44%. So no, "Learn English" doesn't seem fair. Maybe everyone should try to learn another language.
Finally someone cracked the Math 😊
It'd be ridiculous to expect me to know the particular situation of each person in their respective census. Though I can agree that the standard of the Parisians in the video was "incredibly low".
In Paris, nice, Marseilles, it's better to learn Arabic. 😊

i am rooting on you as a creator. your creativity is literally dripping in this video. really really impressive, tejas!
Seriously thank you!
Absolutely top notch, but I see far greater potential.
Let's all remember why the olympics started in the first place. It's a war game, designed to showcase warriors. THAT used to be the sell for the nations, people were afraid to invade you if you did good in the games.
We need like gladiators again lol
Sure , that i don't hate the Olympics , but the IOC simply cannot stay in outdated business model and should make a really impactful regulation update and they also have to adapt with changes as sports scene would be never a stagnant scene
Good vid, it's a shame that so many cities just see no benefit from the Olympics, London is a slight exception, Stratford got a lot of development and loads of venues are being used still
A few of the venues were moved to other cities as well.
the addition of Samy was so good…the translation and the humor🤩
Thought I'd run through the video fast, but stayed for every second of it! Great stuff, keep it up!

Games in 1984 Los Angeles had a 80 million dollar surplus.
The money left went to Amateur Athletics Foundation that created youth sports programs.
Good to know!
This is such a well-produced video. I can see that you clearly researched the topic well, and allowed locals to represent that data as well. You earned a subscriber :)
The London olympics inspired alot of people who had never played sports to get into sports!
Even years after the event
It also blew up alot of olympians careers as youtube stars, of which I still watch regularly today.
I love what you just summed up at the end because you actually gave ideas on how to make it better in the future. perfect A+.
ur vids are getting better and better

Very well made video! Was actually super impressed with the quality!
Man Tejas your video quality is equivalent to channels with 10M+ subs. Im so glad i found this channel

Aww you guys are having so much fun! Great segment! Have a blast!! ❤❤❤
i think if people cant figure out how to make the olympics financially and environmentally sustainable and good for the host cities we should just stop having them. my personal suggestion is choosing a different city for each event (or maybe grouping them together or something so all the swimmers and divers are in the same place. idk). and that way one city doesnt have to bear the brunt of hosting the olympics and construct the olympic village and spend billions on new facilities. it might feel a bit different but at least it wont bankrupt every city that hosts
people like you are the reason I want to continue doing youtube, this is amazing 👏
14:24 “Because 1.5 Billion for clean this water, and when I see this water I DONT SEE THE GROUND, yk.” Parians are funny ass hell 😭🙏
New subscriber! Loved this video. Also loved Samy! Tejas, stop perpetuating the “bad American tourist” narrative. 😂😂❤
They can have different countries host different games…basketball can be played in America, hockey can be played in England ….
i'm really rooting for your success dude, wish the youtube algorithm choose you one day. :)
Hosting the Olympics in Sochi was a WILD idea. Knowing how unprepared the city was + how insane the corruption is....
This was a fire video bro, your videos are leveling up so fast, love seeing the growth! 👏🏽🔥
Informative and entertaining video. Nice job!
Amazing video quality Tejas, hope to see your channel grow big!!!
Your videos just keep getting better and better! Love
The commitment to travel to Paris for this is NEXT LEVEL! This video is GOATED!!!
This is the exact video I was looking for with all the negative chatter going around about the Olympics. Amazing video as usual Tejas
I thought this video was gonna talk about the same points of Search & Party's video, that I just watched, but the approach is totally different and you giving a different point of view by being in Paris and interview locals about the situation.
Also lots of people watch it via tv channels instead of coming to paris due to the accessibility of tv channels
Also lots of swimmers ended up extremely sick after swimming and one of them ended up at the hospital
My god, this video is incredibly well done. I am amazed that you were able to afford the production and quality with only 70k subscribers. Bravo
The Olympics in Calgary made money as well. They were reinvested into helping our athletes and left a beautiful legacy.
"Dark side no one knows about" literally everybody knows and talk about it all the time. The public is the one who pressured cities to withdraw their bids due to budget concerns.
Great video Tejas! Got sucked into it from the start! Much love 🖤
Cool video, I loved the vibe and storytelling
My city recently hosted a big hockey tournament. we heard it was gunna bring money to the downtown area cause that’s where the event center is. No our entire city barley got money from the event and our Walmarts even upgraded to the 2024 stores (which I hate by the way it’s awful) cause they thought our city was gunna get more money from the hockey teams & tourism. But it went to the city that was already knows for its tourism it’s a German themed town and I can’t deny it’s a cool designed town but damn did it fuck our city over I could not imagine it on a country level
It would be interesting to see an aftermath video now when the Paris Olympics is over.
So when I got the chance to visit a few years ago and saw the Olympic Stadium and it was vacant and kind of run down (I won’t say it’s totally abandoned because I’m not sure if they still use it for events) it was honestly pretty sad.
been waiting for this to drop ⚡
My guy :)
This video is good and all but why’d you have to ruin that poor sharpie’s future 0:32 ?
Really cool video essay man I really liked it
