  • In this video we explain why we choose to wean our kids off of their mothers. We also talk about how we do it and what to look for.
Weaning can be a very stressful time for both the mother and the kids. Stress causes many problems for a goat. If a goat is stressed than their immune system tends to get weak. The day of weaning we will deworm all of the kids and also spot deworm the does that need it. We check the famacha score on all of the does to see if they need to be dewormed or not. Another step that we take is to do fence line weaning. This allows the mother and the babies to be close to one another but not be able to nurse.
Coccidia is another concern while weaning. All goats have some coccidia but, under stressful conditions the immune system cannot fight it off. We keep a close eye to make sure no one has scours. Scours is not always but, typically a sure sign of Coccidia. If we see that we will then treat with Corid to control the problem.
