  • Hello, everyone! Nice to see you again! Portrait painting is still present in the Islamic world, contrary to the rules of Islam. An example of this are the portraits of the sultans of the Ottoman Empire, who look sternly at the visitors from the walls of the Istanbul Military Museum. They were painted by the famous Turkish artist Nevzat Cevik, commissioned by the General Staff of the Turkish Armed Forces. It took him 18 months to study ancient miniatures, engravings and manuscripts to accurately convey through his brush what the Ottoman Empire looked like. Let's take a look at some of his work, which we brought to life with the help of neural networks. This is very exciting. Enjoy watching!

Note that none of those paintings are real appearance of the sultans.
Sultans didn't allow to be painted in the early age, except for Mehmed II and Suleiman I, up until Mahmud II in early 18th century. And even during the reign of successor son of Mehmed II, Bayezid I had all paintings in the palace removed, which he thought it's sinful.
Reason why Mehmed II and Suleiman I have paintings by Bellini (Mehmed II) and Titan (Suleiman I) (which is not included in video but you can simply google it) was because they both were embracing towards arts work and they were simply more open minded. Meanwhile other sultans in the video like Selim I who was pretty pious and kept a very simple humble appearance throughout his life. There's even a story of him when he sees his son Suleiman I comes in his presence with accessories and fancy dress, Selim angrily says "ey Suleyman! if you dress this fancy, what is left to your mother?"

Mahmoud II was in 19th century, not 18th. And son of Mehmed II is Bayezid II, not Bayezid I. But you're correct overall, most paintings do not represent the real appearances of the sultans

This was very interesting. What did the tag of “Ibrahim Deli” reference? Also, best looking 😉Osman the young and Selim 11. They were all lookers except Ibrahim 1 looked weird and sick. Just my two cents. I love these types of videos. I am a history buff and find these depictions, expression using AI to be fascinating.

He was a little bit unstable. Some claims: slapping the napes of the ministers
, throwing gold to fishes, throwing his child to pool, trying to cover whole palace with fur after some story....

Anyone else notice how the hats just keep getting bigger!!! It started out fairly reasonable, and kinda showy, but by the end, they just got ridiculously huge! Murad IV had to change it up for a smaller flashier red one, probably just so he didn't have to have a monster sized hat on all the time! Then a traditionalist came back into power and finished the series of Sultans with the BIGGEST HAT EVER!!! I gotta say.... I'm impressed with anyone who would wear a hat that big! Anyways, cool video.
