Used a rebond technique on the strings, essentially playing with lots of finger movement but with slight touch, caring for the string to clack on the pickup or body of the bass

Steve Harris is the reason why I picked up the bass, but not only because he is a kick ass bass player but because he also wrote some of the greatest rock songs ever written. I haven't actually looked into how much he actually writes on bass if at all, but I've personally written most of my stuff on bass.
Same hear, started playing bass in 1984 only because I heard piece of mind and heard that kick ass sound and I haven't stopped since. He wrote damn near all of the first three then you start getting alot of Adrian Smith and Bruce with an occasional Dave Murray song

@@rorz999Maybe because your reading comprehension sucks, Steve Harris has written the majority of Maiden's songs, what I said, is that I don't know if he actually writes them using the bass or if he uses guitar or keyboard to actually write.

It's important to notice that the plucking in this song is quite soft. Going hard on this one will consume your stamina very fast. That's why the action (how high strings are from the bridge) is quite low so you can keep a claking sound, along with high gain it appreas that you're playing really hard. Did my best with the transcription. Let me know if you have any doubts. More info in the description. Song is in D Major but also has some D Minor parts. Overall the harmony is represented on power chords so it can be quite ambiguous to work on.

Isn't it how Steve Harris always play? I've had problem appreciating that bass sound, because it's always loud in the mix, while the attack of each notes feel "clacky" and almost weak.

You are quite right using the neck pickup only for this song. Steve Harris uses a Fender P bass and so if you use a jazz and want to cop his tone the neck pickup will get you close. Good cover 🤘

Hi, could you try to do a cover of The Ballad Of Hamantha by Jack Stauber? I've been trying to figure out the bassline but can't really wrap my head around it. His 50 - 110 signature flat wound strings helps too, to not waste energy on the rigth hand.
Left hand can prove an issue, but you fix it by flatening the neck and lowering the action.
I read they removed a thin layer of wood under the bridge to be able to make the action even lower.
As for the songs, I found that Somewhere In Time really required daily practice to have a shot at pulling it off. It's litteraly impossible to just go for it after not having touched the bass for one week.
I have seen a live version where he himself can't play it like on the record.

Does anyone know what his fingering pattern is during the intro? I'm realtively new to bass and I can't tell if he's doing 'index-middle-middle' repeated or alternating every single note between index and middle. Any help would be appreciated
There’s actually a good deal of ghost notes in the song that you have to study the isolated track to get down, but this is the meat and potatoes of the song.🤘🏻
