    More importantly Natas and Gonz were the first two skaters to ollie onto handrails. They also were the first to adapt Rodney's kickflip to street obstacles.

    Mike v isn't really a person to actually care about things like that. At least that is the impression I always get from his social media and interviews and the sort.
    He sort of reminds me of Rodney Mullen, just being a really cool person, honest and sincere.

      +lil cocoa butta the first kid to pull the handle bar off of his box scooter in 1956 invented street skating, years before Rodney was hopping around in his short-shorts.

      If you think Mike V is honest, check out this video. He lied to Ed Templeton, said he didn't have his paycheck, then stole it, & put Ed Templeton out of business. The Mike V that you see on camera & on social Media is a facade, a fake public persona. I met him and he is completely different off camera.th-cam.com/video/w4twp085Ywg/w-d-xo.html

    None of the others are as smooth and fast as the one Natas did. He deserves the cred 100%. Mike V in that sequence is only for about 180 of his 360 spin on top of the pole.

    Streets on Fire was mostly shot in 1988, i'd guess. Case in point : Salba's part has been filmed (with his 'heavy friends') at the combi pool / Pipeline skatepark. That thing was gone by early 1989. Most decks that the SC team skates in SoF are 1987/88 models (Grosso's demon, Grabke's exploding clock, Salba's witchdoctor, Natas' bulldog model). Not a single 1989 model to be seen in the entire movie. Tilting at windmills here???

    This is a dope video. Liked that it was informative & not one sided as to who did what... In all honesty, I always thought the natas spin was one of those tricks that just came about when a bunch of guys were dorking around waiting for that one dude who always shows up late (we all know one of those guys) & was like a "group effort" of trying to one up each other & get creative on a board 🤷‍♂️

  • @ariekanibalie
    @ariekanibalie 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I recall reading an interview with Natas where he says he would go to contests in Europe and they'd have a fire hydrant set up just for him, hoping he'd bust out his signature move - only they were waist-high European style hydrants that just didn't lend themselves for spinning at all.

  • @bennyshambles
    @bennyshambles 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I always thought Streets of Fire was solidly 1988, or at least the footage was. Another clue is that SST supplied the music and most of it was from records they released 1987 and earlier. By 1989 Powell was about to release Ban This, SMA World Industries was starting really take off (thanks to them poaching Mike Vallely from Powell) and board shapes slowly started to change to the “popsicle.” Also, 1989 was when Natas, Jim Theibaud, Julien Stranger, etc. did that tour in old Cadillacs or whatever. Natas' style in 1989 had evolved from this shorts and big bangs period.
    I'm no authority and my memory from the time, being just 10 years old, isn't exact. Things moved so quickly that it's hard to know for sure. You're right about them not taking a year or more to film, so it could quite possibly be very early 1989 footage. Only those involved would know for sure.

  • @warhammer1
    @warhammer1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That's why Natas' spin in '89 is so epic, (for me, at least) because he was spinning pretty quick, and it because it was on the hydrant.

  • @SPOD_ZONE
    @SPOD_ZONE 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Natas' spin was mindblowing at the time because those hydrants have a small sharp top, which makes the balance point really small. That one with the kickflip out at the end on the pipe was bonkers too. The rock ones are cool, but the stakes are way lower.

    I used to LOVE R.A.D. Magazine when I was a kid. Here in the UK, we had Thrasher & TWS obviously but you couldn’t necessarily find them easily (although it wasn’t too hard either), but R.A.D. Magazine they sold in my local shop. Basically, at the age of 10, I’d say at least 70% of my skate knowledge came from reading that 1 magazine. Blast from the fucking past!

      There's something special about Southbank in London as well. It's kinda the Stonehenge of English skating lol and it had a very distinct vibe (less so now it's more touristy). It was dank and dirty and dangerous (until skaters showed up you only got winos, smackheads and tramps there). You were as likely to come home without your deck after getting beat up as have a good session. Point being.. cos it was so edgy you skated different, more attitude, more aggressive, less fu*ks given.. and magic happened. From these guys to Gonz to just us regular rats.
      Sorry, long old guy ramble.. but that quote touched something! Also.. seeing pros there was just epic for us, even in photos.

  • @Nominay

    Vallely's was more of a proto Natas spin ... the natas spin is associated with a fire hydrant more, and part of that is how much harder it probably is to do on a fire hydrant, and with more spin. If Vallely's version had been posted in the states, even as part of a video, I don't think it would have become iconic like it did when Natas did it.

    • @ericwilkinson42

      Mr Regular Word that's definitely one way to conceptualize the trick. You saw that alot in the 90s with the really vertical "muska style" fs flips, that were essentially hardflips (or the version of hardflips that were popular at the time) with a FS 180. Nowadays tho, people are generally more stoked on fs/bs flips that are closer to the most literal ideal of a 180 kickflip, almost as if the skater and the board are connected during the entire rotation, as opposed to the board doing its own thing while the skater rotates above it.

    _Answer:_ I think a Fire-Hydrant is the _main part_ of a Natas "spin". So, No.

    If nothing else Natas' spin in Streets on Fire was perfectly placed in his video part along with the music from fIREHOSE, who were the Minutemen (before D. Boone died and Ed found Watt's number in the phonebook and pestered him into playing again, and with him), who wrote and recorded Corona, which became the Jackass theme... sooooooo whatever. I'm just glad that this was my childhood and these people are talking about this stuff.

    I think you're probably kinda off on the production date of Streets of Fire. I would venture to say that that footy could all be from as far back as 1987. It's not actually a skate video. It's a skate film as it was shot on 16mm. Shooting on 16 looks much better but is a lot more work and you can't just edit deck to deck in a bedroom like a video and bang out an edit in a could of weeks. You have numerous elements during the production such as shooting, film processing, sound and editing, each of which basically gets handled separately and it takes longer. I think this is ultimately the reason there weren't that many skate films made. Part of what was strange about Streets of Fire was that it felt dated when it came out. The footage in Speed Freaks is actually a much better look at what the SMA crew were up to 1989 and, if you look at it, you can see that Natas' style of dress had changed quite a bit. You can also chart this change if you look at the ads in Thrasher during those years. My point is basically that trying to chart a timeline for Natas has always been difficult but that fact, plus the fact that Vallely skated with Natas and Gonz a lot early on, makes it hard for me to credit Mike on this. I do have to say once and for all that somebody has to make a real, honest to goodness skateboarding archive on the web that includes all the mags and vids so that the culture can be accurately documented. We can't be having sequences popping up from European mags 30 years later that blow all the previous timelines sky high.

      I think Vallely trick is not a Natas spin, it is like a 180 disaster and then like a (over or transfer) rock and Roll out, don´t you think so???

      Honestly, I'm torn. I've looked at the sequence on Insta again (a lot) and tried moving it quick to sort of animate it and I think you're right. It's not even really a spin in the same way that Natas was doing it. I think maybe it's a similar mind set and approach on similar terrain between skaters that skated together, pushed and influenced each other.

      The Natas spin is more like a stall, Mike's spin was more in the flow of it.
      Also, regarding 16mm, shooting film was of course way more prevalent in those days, so developing the stuff was a whole lot quicker than now, especially if they were in the LA area.

      16mm is harder to shoot now, then and always. It's why digital video has taken over in production almost universally and only the most A-List of Hollywood directors even get the option to shoot on film anymore. As far as I know, the only 3 skate videos ever shot entirely on film are Sick Boys and Wheels and Streets of Fire. The reason is that it's a heck of a lot harder. The skater is beholden to the crew being ready and not the other way around. That just isn't an option given the way skate videos are made and what they are all about.

      Oh I know it's harder compared to digital, I'm not denying that. But back then it was a film orientated world and 16mm was used for shitloads of different productions. Not just hollywood kind of stuff (that's mostly 35mm). 16mm was used for a lot of documentaries and low budget stuff as well. It is true that it was more and more transitioning into video, but the whole infrastructure and the know how was still there. You could get your film developed and screened pretty quickly. And in case of skatevids there was not really a crew needed, just one guy with a camera (although he does need to know how to change the film). The camera person needs to know what they're doing but film is still pretty forgiving.
      And even today shows like The Walking Dead and a lot of relatively low budget indies are shot on 16.
      Anyways, all I'm saying that 16mm was not as complicated as it is now. But yeah, video is def easier and if you are going to shoot dozens of takes of a trick a whole lot cheaper too.

    Mike V's is almost a full 180 ollie before he's flat on the pole, it's more of a 180 stall revert.

    Did Gator invent the stalefish? I hear different sources and did he invented the Sean Penn too? Thank you your videos are informative.

      There is a great article on Transworld's site about who created the Stalefish. It was probably Hawk but Gonz might've also done it. They were at the same European Skate Summer camp together and they both have photos doing it there. Or RadRat will tell us how it was somebody completely different who never got the credit lol

    The first Natas spin I saw was in a Shorty’s video from like 2002-ish? Can’t remember exactly. Also Haslam does one in his Transworld part.

    • @seanissomething
      @seanissomething 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It wasn’t Shorty’s sorry. It was a video called Chomp On This from 2002, so that kinda pre-dates what you said as far as the resurgence.

      @seanissomething 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you watch Chomp On This, at around the 9 minute mark someone does a Natas Spin but it’s part of a montage so I can’t tell who it is! Also if you haven’t seen Chomp On This you definitely should because it’s amazing. Jamie Thomas’ part is his best ever IMO.
