    I worked on the lighting crew the last 3 seasons of the show. Both Dan & Michael were simply awesome generous people. Dan passed during the hiatus season after surgery. ---- The following and last season, on the very first filming day back, as the crew gathered back on the set after lunch, Michael gathered the crew together. As Michael started to address the crew, he teared up and started to cry. With great difficulty, he said "it will never be the same again".

      @@FactsVerse --- Well as with many crew members, memorable for us usually applies to the location, weather, or things like various filming difficulties. The script subject matter is rarely remembered for long. Most memorable for me was the location in Big Bear Lake Ca. in the legendary winter there of 1969/70. I can't remember the show title or airing date now. Big bear Lake was totally frozen over solid. We filmed up even higher at the smaller Cedar Lake. Our big location trucks were stuck everywhere. Our big arc lights and the big cable needed to supply power to them from the generator would get hot during use and sink into the deep snow and ice. Everything would then freeze, and our equipment and power cables would be locked in, unmovable. After lunch one day, Dan walked out in the snow, and seeing the small group I was with about 50 feet away, challenged us with a large reward, to hit him in the face with a snowball. What great fun that show was. ----- My career in the movie business lasted over 40 years and those 3 seasons on Bonanza were the only time I can truly say I woke up in the morning and couldn't wait to get to work. ------- The show went on many locations during my 3 seasons, Old Tuscon Az, Sonora Ca, Stanislaus River Ca, and more. Occasionally even Franklin Canyon Reservoir behind Beverly Hills lol. Of course, the last 3 seasons were filmed at Warner Bros stages and back lot, not Paramount where it began and filmed for many years. What great memories and stories I have of that special show. ----- Oh, btw, Dan owned a restaurant in the San Fernando Valley and would invite the crew and families out for dinner. His specialty, that he would serve himself, was catfish. Dan would wear bright colored bib overalls.

      That 14th and final season was missing Hoss, but it brought back another new version of the original theme and David Canary ( as Candy ). But it was missing not only Dan Blocker, but also Sheriff Coffee since Ray Teal retired.
      The final year also didn't have one comedy among those last 16 episodes.
      Tim Matheson ( previously a ranch hand on The Virginian ) joined the cast as ex-con Griff King. Ironically Lorne Greene's next TV series the following season was a private detective show called GRIFF.

      My mother’s cousin met Dan and family at a hotel. He was being mobbed in a hallway and they let him in their room and hit it off. For several years he invited them to visit his home and spend the week. He’s buried in Dekalb TX in a simple grave. I was about 12 when he died. He played some bit parts in old Westerns pre Bonanza and was usually a bad guy. He also attended my same college, Hardin Simmons University and story goes that he was expelled for farting at a pep rally but that may just be a story. He graduated from Sul Ross and I think with a teaching degree. Fess Parker also attended Hardin Simmons as well as an actor from High Chaparral who’s name escapes me this moment.... I think Don Collier. Also a regular on Pony Express Rider and a few Wayne movies. I think Collier has passed on.

    • @JAG51020
      @JAG51020 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @@None-zc5vg The show had carried on a long time following Roberts departure, however. In fact there were more episodes without Adam than with him. Pernell Roberts left the show for good after season 6, and he only appeared sporadically that season, with season 5 being his last full-time season. Roberts considered himself a serious actor, having done Shakespeare on stage, and the further he went with Bonanza he felt it was beneath his talent, once saying about the show that it was "a little far fetched that 3 grown men all still lived at home and did whatever their Pa said." Adam would essentially be replaced by ranch foreman Candy (David Canary) as well as by adopted son Jamie (Mitch Vogel) in the later seasons. It was only after the loss of Blocker that the ratings declined and the show could not continue. Lorne Greene and Michael Landon both knew that the Hoss character was the heart and soul of the show. Years later Landon said that Bonanza would have lasted 20 years if Dan Blocker had lived!

    • @None-zc5vg
      @None-zc5vg 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@JAG51020 There was a later show called "Fantasy Island", one of whose principal actors was Hervé Villechaize, a small man (not a dwarf) who was in every episode until he started behaving lecherously and also [gasp!] demanding more pay. He was dumped from the cast and replaced by a 'normal' actor. The t.v. audiences promptly dumped the show (which had cretinous plots, being an Aaron Spelling production-line effort) and the series ended tout de suite. The little actor (whose physical and personali problems soon led to his suicide) had become the main attraction, like Hoss, and about the show's only 'attraction' (it really was bad, even by the standards of U.S. t.v.).

    My grandmother worked for the studio and I was about 8 years old and would go with him to work sometimes, I got to meet all of the actors on bonanza and the other shows being filmed at the time, dan came outside during lunch break one day and I was shooting basketball and he grabbed the ball and played a game of horse with me, he picked me up several times so I could dunk the ball. Lol. He was a giant kid. Really he was, he was always laughing on the set , he took us to dean Martin's restaurant and we had hamburgers and hot dogs and fries. Lol. At a steakhouse, I wish you could still post pictures on here cause I have many that I took while at the studio on different days and holiday breaks from school, he was a awesome guy

It was so fun to watch him in a very real life in the home his father (Loren Green) he was always about home, food in the pantry , windows in the house, all the horses treated well. My favorite comedy was the old miner and Walter (the genius sleeping dog) staving off outlaws trying to bushwack Hoss and the miner in his cabin.
    The best episode was Hoss' love interest that married the fancy city man. He turned out to be an abusive gambler and abandoned her to die in childbirth in a charity hospital the night Hoss was sent by her father to fetch her home.
    He was preparing her funeral and to take the baby girl to her grandfather when the husband arrived and demanded money or else he would take the baby. He threatened Hoss at gunpoint and Hoss just walked over and nailed him downward with his balled fist like a hammer in one blow. That was Hero Hoss.

    I can remember watching the original episodes of Bonanza when I was a child, propped with my fists under my jaw about 24” away from the family TV and remembering that my favorite character was Hoss, he seemed to be a real life protector of not only his television family but could be to anyone else in trouble, he was like a guardian angel. My wife and I watch the re runs with my son on tubi, he enjoys them very much, as do we.

    I was a faithful watcher of bonanza. However I did not get to see the last episode number 14. And I don’t know how I can get to see that. I know this was a few years ago but I watch every rerun of Bonanza now but I still haven’t seen how Haas was written out and I did not know that he had died as he did until today which is May 9, 2022. That is sad.😥

    According to Michael Landon and others, the only difference between Dan Blocker and his character Hoss was that Dan was not dim-witted. Like Hoss he was big and strong, good with kids, and very caring and personable - but he also had a master's degree and was quite intelligent.

    I would trade all this internet and social media in a heart beat to go back to the days of just watching this show as a kid. Back then I think my tv had antennas and no remote. Ah. Some how at the time I knew these were the best of days.

    I went to James Monroe High in Sepulveda, Ca. I was on the running track when i saw a red Cadillac convertible. The top was down, on Nordoff near Haskell, with a Big man with his arm stretched out over the passenger seat.. It was Dan Blocker!!! I will Never forget seeing him!!

    Michael Landon wasn't out of a job very long he got to play Charles Ingalls a couple years after Bonanza ended then after that he went and did Highway to Heaven. But Dan Blocker was my favorite on the show because of his last name Blocker he was big like an offensive lineman.

      Little House was really to give the ensemble of character actors and crew from the last two years of Bonanza, new steady work.
      Many of the town regulars and Mr Edwards were repeating incidental characters on Bonanza. A lot of the production staff got to keep working too, via the TV movie and the new series.

    I couldn't watch it all. It was too sad. But I do know how serious the surgery for having your gall bladder removed used to be. They used to open the entire chest wall. It was a big, dangerous event and apparently it was a surgery that they did in England only if it was a life and death situation. Suddenly, they started using the laparoscopic surgery with just two little chest wounds and one in the belly button for the camera. Easy. And so much safer. I had that and lived to tell the tale. Such a lovely big man. And far too young to die. And obstetricians had been using the laparoscope since the late 50's I think. Medicine has made such great strides that he would have lived if it had been done today. Too sad.

    I more or less grew up with the series watching it on Dutch and German television. I was eight years old when Dan Blocker died but I still remember it being on the news. Our family was devastated because we all watched and enjoyed the series.

    Always loved Hoss/Dan Blocker/Cartwright! Used to watch Bonanza with my Grandma when I was very young . We watched up until the tome of her death then I was a total fan. Im now 66(67 this Dec) and still love watching Bonanza reruns! I'll continue watching them til they're no longer aired or I join the cast in heaven lol! However I have the DVDs! Thank you for this memory! God bless you all. Prayers out to the family of our beloved Dan. I had an older brother named Dan, he too was a gentle giant at 6' 2" and around 250 "! Much like "Hoss" he's greatly missed. He left us in 2011 of cancer! Luv to him and all!

    Several things that were not mentioned is that season 14 changed from Sunday night to Monday night, the very first show was a two hour special having little joe get married, we thought that this would be how Dan would be replaced, only to have Joe’s pregnant wife brutally murdered on that first show, this outraged most of the viewers, and in turn we turned the show off

      Women's lives weren't worth a plugged nickel on Bonanza, if they fell in love with a Cartwright.

      I recently watched that two Parter for the first time, and after losing Blocker, they really needed to have that ending re-written, because it was such a downer. At the least, Blocker didn't have to have his character of hoss suffer in Landon's place.

    One of my favorites was when Hoss was looking for the 5 Leprechauns in a St Patrick Day show. He and Little Joe were in the woods making silly sounds at each other. I laughed so hard. Dan Blocker was amazing onscreen and off.

    One of my all time favorite episodes of Dan Blocker aka Hoss Cartwright was when he was away from the Ponderosa and had an accident and suffered amnesia, it was so well done, it bright to life things about his mother who Hoss only knew of her through his father's memory. And gradually gets his memory back.
