This movie isn't going to be for everyone. However, it was a damn great attempt at adapting something that was said to be unfilmable and if it makes a new generation of people to get invested in some real OG science fiction, this film does its job. The first film does a good job of establishing the universe. What I need to see from the second film is more character exploration and more exploration in the universe. I have faith Villeneuve will get more in depth in Part Two. He hasn't let me down yet.
This adaptation isn’t perfect but it’s a damn good attempt. Aside from some characters that we haven’t seen yet (I’m assuming we will meet them in part 2) and a couple sub plots around a few characters (I’m sure will be explained in part 2) it’s pretty faithful to the source material. I seriously appreciate the fact that you guys liked the film so much. I need to stay off Twitter because it's frustrating seeing so many people who haven't read the book(s) go into the movie expecting Star Wars/new marvel movie. I took my mum and sister to a subtitled version, they said it helped a lot with some of the names. This film deserves multiple viewings, it's incredible. I remember the magazine Duelist doing this "battle of sci-fi" article once where they pitted the protaganists of various franchises against each other, so obviously one of the battles was Luke vs Paul. Paul asked for the battle to take place on Arrakis, and when he said it was a desert planet, Luke responded with "Oh, like Tatooine?" "Uh... Not quite..." In case you're wondering, Paul jumped down a shelter just before a standstorm and Luke was sandblasted, leaving only his skeleton.

Appearently there can be a 4 hour directors cut. There were couple of important scenes they shot, released teasers and talked about that didnt made the theatrical cut. As a long time fan of the Dune, I loved your fresh enthusiasm. It makes me so happy knowing that people who didn't know anything about it can be so passionate about it.
There was foreshadowing during the scene when the worm was coming for the harvester as well and Gurney/Josh Brolin comes to get Paul. Paul says "I know your footsteps, old man." The Fremen have many names for the worms, and one of them is "Old man of the desert." I liked that line in particular, since you think he means Gurney... Or maybe he means the worm? Pretty cool line.
The only downside to the movie experience is if you're a book reader, you have full context of the characters and you spend a good while with them in the books. So I wanted to see so much of each character in the movie. But I think Denis did a great job communicating a lot of the key themes and arcs; especially to those new to the series. I mean the fact that you were able to figure out that Paul can see branch realities is evidence to that.
Pictures of the deleted scenes that didn't make the final cut are floating around (more of Yueh, the banquet scene, etc.) Makes me happy that Denis at least filmed them.
It was a bit confusing for me in the beginning. I had never read the books or seen the older Dune film. I had to pay attention really hard to all the details and the lore of everything lol but i love the world of Dune and once i started to understand it more i was totally on board. will give it a second watch through with subtitles so i can understand the context better

The Dune Universe is one of my favorites, if u wanna dive into more theres like 20 books in total but for the core story theres 6 books written by Frank Herbert, unfortunately he passed before he could finish his vision but he left an Outline which his son Brian Herbert found and picked up the mantle with two more book that give a proper ending, theres also a Prequel trilogy that his son wrote (i'd read those 3 first before the 2 books that end the Dune story)
this is my first introduction to dune, and the best way to explain this movie is perfect world building, great exposition, and great sound design and score, it immediately makes u care about the world and immerses you. You can tell that visuals and storytelling were the main focus, and I couldn’t be more appreciative in a time where all movies are action and explosions, dune really has made me care for the characters and politics, and the premonitions have me on the edge of my seat for the upcoming stakes of this universe. Definitely an incomplete story and u leave definitely wanting 2 and 3. Edit: I also believe the sequels will make audiences appreciate this first installment even more.
Disclaimer: I've read the book and I have a love/hate relationship with the 1984 movie. Villenueve has streamlined the story where there's enough information for the story to move forward and not confuse the audience. He anchors the audience by making you relate and love the characters. He doesn't have to tell you that spice is important, however, the characters show us how important spice is to them. Also: Pretzel bites rule!
I've watched and read many reviews of the movie. In Australia we have to wait almost another month for the cinematic release. More than any other, this review gives me confidence that people who haven't read the books can still dig the movie.
I'm about to watch this movie for the 3rd time. I liked it so much and I catch something new every time I watch. I can't wait for the spoiler talk. I had no knowledge either, I prefer it that way.
One of the best reviews yet! One thing to keep in mind is the slow burn of the plot plus the layers of details and concepts has infinitely more depth in the books.
I had the exact same reaction as you guys, i knew nothing about it and went in just coz i love villeneuve and i loved it wasn't confused at all for me. The whole movie was like an intro to the world of dune, it was slow but it was meant to be slow, to explain the stuff to non readers. Part 2 is gonna kick things up a notch, can't wait for it. DESERT POWER!!!
As for the conflicting visions - YES he can see/experience most potential futures. So in one reality Jamis was his friend and guide - in the reality that actually took place - Jamis wasn't the guide into the Fremen world he thought it would be. Calculate is probably a better word than see, but that is because of some spoiler shit, although like so much of the layered story-telling - it's been hinted very briefly at. The dragonfly transport looking thing is called a thopter :)

About the books...the "gold nuggets" are in Frank Herbert's openings to each chapter. They cover snippets about politics and religion as well references to the history within the context of the world-building that he did in the novels. Still hoping to try and catch this movie.
I agree with you guy. AND YES,this is one of those movies you HAVE to watch in IMAX and not on HBO max, because the experience of the movie will NOT be the same. The visuals and SOUND play a huge part to making the story go to the next level. I'm gonna watch it again, but in Dolby Sound. I can't wait 😁
I feel you, this was the most VICERALY LOUD movie I have EVER watched! I mean there were times I could feel my chest tightening because of the soundtrack itself...and that Sadukar Throat Singing part was HYPNOTIC!!! So good, I am sooooo glad they have confirmed part two.
The movie is large in scale and a visual masterpiece. I've read the book twice and Denis did an outstanding job of staying true to the book. Nice review and spot on with your review. Yes this is a very complex story and I'd recommend seeing the movie twice to absorb all the information. I'd love to hear your thoughts on Rabban and Baron Harkonnens the villains? I truly love your excitement about this movie and showing your passion.. well done. Dune Part 2 has already been green-lit for 2023.
This is a masterpiece. And I've seen the original and read the books, not all of them but enough and I can still say that I need this, I need part two, immediately!
i came in knowing nothing about dune, and when i was watching the movie, i was in awe the whole time. the world, the characters, their arcs and motivations, and the costumes - so incredible. i can’t wait to see what’s next!
A beautiful interpretation of the novel. The scenes sacrificed gave room to a deep world full of nuance, detail and intensity. A profound visual and auditory experience on iMax.
I'm really surprised at how many people actually liked this. I LOVED it but Dennis' movies can filter people really really easily. I'm glad the people that actually like it are in a big noticeable majority this time around and it's not becoming a Bladerunner situation
Love the enthusiasm. Killer review. Glad you guys loved it. By the way, when you get to the end of the second book you find out that Paul is not a hero at all. Think more like Anakin Skywalker.
Kinda feels like after quarantine, people are into Dune because they've been hanging for something grand, something epic in scale but also something a little intellectual.
Please do read the books, you will absolutely enjoy them. You can tell from the movie that the Atreides were basically set up. But the way the story unfolds is masterful. The books dig deeper into the houses and the messiness of those relationships. I've heard that part 2 has now been greenlit and I can't wait for 2023...
As usual I’m going to comment before I finish watching the video. I absolutely LOVED this movie. Was not disappointed at all. The second part will be epic and I can’t wait. 😍😍😍😍👏👏👏
Haha I love you guys. Seen it four times in theaters and might go again for another IMAX. I think I’m gonna read the remaining five books sooner than I thought, especially since I heard Part Three is supposed to be the second book.
Absolutely! Miles Teg (and his clone), Young Duncan ghola, Odrade, Scytale, Daniel & Marty, the Honored Matres and their Futars... So many great characters in those 2 books! I always wonder about "what could have been, had Herbert lived long enough to finish the series himself. Especially around what forced the Honored Matres to escape back from The Scattering!
There are actually 6 original Dune novels written by Frank Herbert. After he died his son has further published 15 more Dune books. It’s a pretty big franchise that hasn’t really been tapped into yet.
When it got to the end, and I was pretty sure it would end where it did, I was sitting there as the credits roll like "I am totally willing to sit here and watch another 3 hours to finish this now. Let me hit the washroom and grab another bag of popcorn, I'll do it." I am seriously hoping that they put both movies out in theaters when the second comes out just to hit both in the same day.
I watched it in Dolby Vision at AMC. Totally worthwhile experience. The coloring, the soundtrack, the sound effects make it all join together. The ship coming out of the water when they left Caladan shook me.
I knew barely anything about Dune going into this movie and loved it. Even though it was slow, as long as characters are believable and consistent, any story can be good.
The movie was a very solid presentation of the book. There is some context and details you can get from the books, but the heart and core of the story survived the transition from page to screen. It's a good book, so by all means check it out. I'm just glad the director made the story accessible to folks who aren't familiar with the source material. That was the only way we were ever going to get a sequel.
If you want to know what happens up to the end of book 1 in live-action form but not as confusing as the 1984 movie, I recommend the 3-part Sci-Fi channel mini-series "Frank Herbert's Dune". It's on a budget on the effects department but it has more time to breathe and there are more scenes that delve into the politics. It also has a sequel "Frank Herbert's Children of Dune" which encompasses books 2 and 3.
This was the second film of 2021 that I gave a 10/10 (first one being The Suicide Squad). I loved every second of it; the music, the cinematography, the color pallet, the cast, the action, EVERYTHING! The scene where we see the Fremen riding a sandworm gave me chills.
Part 2 was officially green lighted this week. I have HBO Max but still chose to to see it in the theater because I wanted to see it in that format. I’ve been waiting for a faithful adaption of this caliber for so long. For most of my life this wasn’t considered filmable . I was so worried that this would bomb financially.
I LOVE your reaction and enthusiasm...some people make it seem like Dune will only be appreciated by book nerds...even one reviewer *cough* Grace *cough* was explaining how the data shows that not a lot of POC are going to watch this movie. Dune will be a movie that will spread by word of mouth; people will either love it or not. I feel completely invested and ready for part 2, not let me tell you Part 2 is going to be all the action because it's going to be the mid 2nd act and 3rd act of the book...which is full of so much action...yeah, I can't wait!
We did 4DX! A certain scene had the seats punching us in the back and both of us looked at each other like "wtfuuuu?!" My buddy had issues with his popcorn being rocked around in his seat... And when things got quiet? Nobody in the theater moved a muscle... NEEDto rewatch!
Great review, guys! If you're worried about Duncan Idaho, (Jason Momoa's character), don't be, because he gets cloned later on in Dune Messiah, (Book 2), and becomes much more important.
I appreciate the way everything is fleshed out. I do know about Dune, and Denis Villeneuve does an amazing job in making sure it's easy to follow; the motives of the Harkonnen, why the Atreides moved to Arrakis and the culture of the Fremen. Excellent film. And to think, we never see Feyd, the Emperor or the Guild Navigator, so that left me with more expectation for the sequel. And Baron Harkonnen and the Beast Rabban are sparingly used, which does nothing to make them less interesting or menacing. Can't wait for the sequel. I might have to see this a second time in the theaters.
If you are going to read the books, I reccommend the podcast “reading dune”. This 2 homies read chapter by chapter and then talked about it catching all the details and stuff ! Super fun! Can’t wait to see the second part and hopefully a third!

I had to pay attention really hard to all the details and the lore of everything lol but i love the world of Dune and once i started to understand it more i was totally on board. will give it a second watch through with subtitles so i can understand the context better
Definitely recommend watching the movie twice because this story is complex with characters and story-line.
Watched it twice so far, and many reactions, notice something new every time.
This movie was a drag. Interesting? yes beautiful? yes, great score? Yes, masterpiece? No, exciting? No. the movie had so much info I had to watch it twice to understand it. This movie was boring tbh. It needed 2 more action scenes Nothing happened besides that one fight and even that was boring. It was just ships blowing up. I might watched the sequel to see the rest of the story but I am not hyped for the sequel. I ranked this from a 7/10 after my first viewing to a 8/10.
This film is unbelievable in theaters. I NEED PART TWO 😍
I already watched Dune 2021 twice and i might watch it again!! Will pay more attention on the dialogue/conversations. Can't wait for part 2! 👌
Dune is easily at the top of my list and one of my favorites
this is my first introduction to dune, and the best way to explain this movie is perfect world building, great exposition, and great sound design and score, it immediately makes u care about the world and immerses you.
I also have a love/hate relationship with the 1984 movie, more love than hate actually because STING! The extended cut was so much better, as usual.
Have you guys considered doing a review to the 1984 version of Dune or at least the trailer?
One of the best reviews yet!
One thing to keep in mind is the slow burn of the plot plus the layers of details and concepts has infinitely more depth in the books.
I had the exact same reaction as you guys, i knew nothing about it and went in just coz i love villeneuve and i loved it wasn't confused at all for me. The whole movie was like an intro to the world of dune, it was slow but it was meant to be slow, to explain the stuff to non readers. Part 2 is gonna kick things up a notch, can't wait for it. DESERT POWER!!!
Part 2 would blow people away. Can't wait to see some of things that are yet to come!
Can't wait for part 2!!
🤩So happy you are reading the Dune books now! 💙
Dune is neither a movie or a theme park ride. It is an experience
Amen to that! I remember walking out from my first viewing just BLOWN AWAY!
Lol dune was boring. About the books...the "gold nuggets" are in Frank Herbert's openings to each chapter. They cover snippets about politics and religion as well references to the history within the context of the world-building that he did in the novels. Still hoping to try and catch this movie.
Was waiting on my boys review. Finally watched it in full last night and I NEED PART 2. let’s get the struggling boys !
This movie is a masterpiece one of my favorite movie of the year
It's a masterpiece of science fiction, done. I love DUNE, best Cinema movie this year.
It really was the fastest 3 hours I've experienced. I am so glad they announced part 2
A beautiful interpretation of the novel. The scenes sacrificed gave room to a deep world full of nuance, detail and intensity. A profound visual and auditory experience on iMax.
Real Sci-Fi its back baby! I love how you guys pour your heart on this review, Fking Awesome work!
Shiyet, they need a trilogy to fully cover everything left in the 1st book. haha
This movie is a masterpiece, the books are a bit complicated but after you get it, it glues to you forever.
It’s like one big expensive long pilot episode. It was amazing 🔥🔥🔥 Saw it in IMAX
I'm really surprised at how many people actually liked this. I LOVED it but Dennis' movies can filter people really really easily. I'm glad the people that actually like it are in a big noticeable majority this time around and it's not becoming a Bladerunner situation
Yeah same! I thought people would think it was mediocre or something but it was acutally very well received!
@@GeeklyGoods I mean on Twitter there's still 1/10 Marvel fans going '"mid movie boring movie"
One of my favorite reviews of the movie I've seen. Glad you guys loved it. It's a masterpiece. And they're called Ornithopters.
It’s a Masterpiece, and it hits different if u watch it in Cinema
The Spice must flow.
Please do read the books, you will absolutely enjoy them. You can tell from the movie that the Atreides were basically set up. But the way the story unfolds is masterful. The books
dig deeper into the houses and the messiness of those relationships.
I've heard that part 2 has now been greenlit and I can't wait for 2023...
love seeing how hyped you are about the movie...going to catch it in Imax in a couple of days. Excited that Part 2 has been greenlit as well
As usual I’m going to comment before I finish watching the video.
Man I love ur reviews big fan from Australia 😁
Yeah me too.. After watching this movie, it makes me want to read the book. I want to know what happen to Paul and i can't wait for the part two movie
You need Heretics of Dune and Chapterhouse Dune (5+6) in your collection!
I love that series!
Absolutely!
Miles Teg (and his clone), Young Duncan ghola, Odrade, Scytale, Daniel & Marty, the Honored Matres and their Futars...
So many great characters in those 2 books!
I always wonder about "what could have been, had Herbert lived long enough to finish the series himself.
Especially around what forced the Honored Matres to escape back from The Scattering!
oh you'll like the book it also has a few parts that wasn't added in the movie and its good..
Bro farted inside the theater.
Security: wtf is that smell?!
Bro: spice melange in its purest form, yo.
There are actually 6 original Dune novels written by Frank Herbert. After he died his son has further published 15 more Dune books. It’s a pretty big franchise that hasn’t really been tapped into yet.
The dune audio books are really good
Now ya'll were right about this one!
This flick and new James Bond films were WAY better than crappy Eternals.
In the beginning when they showed the title, underneath it it does say Part One. So I am sure 2 to 3 more movies are in the works.
When it got to the end, and I was pretty sure it would end where it did, I was sitting there as the credits roll like "I am totally willing to sit here and watch another 3 hours to finish this now. Let me hit the washroom and grab another bag of popcorn, I'll do it."
I am seriously hoping that they put both movies out in theaters when the second comes out just to hit both in the same day.
Have no fear, part 2 was green lighted today 😉
It's so true about this film! You CANNOT just kick back and let things go by or you will miss out! GReat review as always fellas!
just finished watching it at 5am what a time lol
BTW there isn't a maybe part 2. It's going to be 3 years, but there WILL be a part 2
Lmfao the best review as always, can't wait to watch this masterpiece 🔥
At the Pace they are going we will get a part 2,3,4,5,6,7,8.... I still like the 1984 version...
Just found this channel. You guys sound like the 90s and I love it. Subscribed
There is a part 2.. It is being released same time next year. its the conclusion to the first novel at the end of next year.
Can't wait for part 2.....hyped. when the weirding module voice amplifier scene kicks in......ouff...I feel like my spine's gonna be pulled.
If you are going to read the books, I reccommend the podcast “reading dune”. This 2 homies read chapter by chapter and then talked about it catching all the details and stuff ! Super fun! Can’t wait to see the second part and hopefully a third!
I've seen A LOT of reviews for this movie in the past 8 weeks.
This is the best one.
The biggest role in this franchise belongs to Mamoa. If you know, you know.
I highly recommend you to watch "prisoners" if you haven't. That movie is a masterpiece and it introduced me to Denis Villeneuve genius.
