There was also something brilliant in how Binary Domain structured it's dub, which in a way that contributed to the story idea of an international team operating within a foreign land. Basically, the main characters and whoever interacted with them was dubbed in English, which made some in-world sense since they were an international crew; however, whenever the game had Japanese characters speaking with other Japanese characters, the English dub didn't dub them and instead kept the original Japanese voices!
I remember getting this game free thanks to PS plus, locked myself in my room all day just to play it, one of the most memorable shooters I've played for the ps3. This game and Vanquish were very underrated on last gem consoles.
Disgree 100% with the headshots part, it was one of the funniest parts of the game for me destroy their head and turn them against each other(thats what happens when you do that). Asife of that, great review!
I was in the exact same position. I've seen the name Binary Domain pop up over the years but for some reason it just registers in my brain as "Bionic Commando" type game and I just write it off. It wasn't until another TH-camr covered why you should play it that I gave it a shot and damn if it isn't one of my favorite 3rd person shooters now because of it. You hit the nail on the head, it's a goofy sci-fi anime. It was goofy writing and endearing characters. It goes on sale for like $5 now, so people really need to stop making excuses and go get it.
Cyberpunk is my favorite genre of anything ever. I LOVE BINARY DOMAIN. Doing my second play-through now. It's the only game from contemporary consoles that I've continued playing after finishing it once already. (Full disclosure: I only got back into gaming a couple years ago.)
Just a PSA: Last year SEGA gave away this game in a bundle that many of you may have claimed, but then forgotten about. So check your Steam library to see if it's not there already. It was also in at least one Humble bundle, so there's a good chance lots of people own it without knowing. ETA: It was also given away for PS3 via PS Plus.
I remember being so disappointed when the voice functionality just wouldn't work for me, absolutely loved the game though. It is the perfect first person B-movie sci fy action thriller for an afternoon.
There are a lot of hidden gems on the PS3, like Rage, El Shaddai, Shadows of the Damned, Remember Me, FUSE, Anarchy Reigns, FUSE, Max Payne 3, Singularity and so on.
Sega, last year, gave this and another games for free on steam, and last month I played this game, and oh god... its breath of fresh air from all the actual games who took the campaign to dark and serious, and even the end is so interesting. Keep it up ethos, great video.
We need to get the message out to SEGA somehow that there is actually a hunger for a Binary Domain sequel. Just like their Yakuza series I feel like Binary Domain is more popular now than it was when it originally released. Plus it was visually brilliant in 2012. Imagine how it would look now on current hardware.
The voice acting was really cheesy, but i adored the gameplay and the aesthetics! I am a sucked for anything futuristic/sci-fi, and especially when it comes to really cool looking hi-tech weaponry! So yeah, just on that front alone - this game had me won over lol! The guns in this game are some of the coolest near-future assault-rifles/smg's/machine-guns i''ve ever seen in gaming. Especially due to their realistic design set-up that look like futuristic models of modern weaponry, (minus the fact that they all seem to be REALLY-REALLY big, lol). And as i said the gameplay is fun too, more of a cyberpunk army of two, sorta. And though def very linear, the story isn't that bad either. So all in all - a criminally underrated game for sure!
Valkyrie Profile is one of the most underrated PS1 titles. Awesome story, soundtrack, gameplay, art style, and voice acting.Would like to see a retro activist on it.
"imagine watching matrix like that"... this is funny because I went to see matrix because it was rainy day during summer vacations... I had no idea what it was... it's my fav movie of all time.
The way you make these videos, for example the way you use music in some of the intros and outros, makes me think that you deserve better in terms of attention as well.
*reads the title* Me: Yes it fucking did deserve a LOT better; Fucking loved that game so god damn much once I found it at a store, it was well worth my damn time.
Ubisoft overhypes their games and has ads EVERYWHERE about them, and then it's a downgrade, I don't think everyone would really see the downgrade if it wasn't so "out there" in your face everywhere u look
Because they had (have?) the licence and made a few Terminator games in the 90s www.rockpapershotgun.com/2016/01/13/have-you-played-bethesdas-terminator-future-shock/
All he had to say was "creators of yakuza" to make me understand why it didn't sell well in the states. They're pretty terrible at merketing over in America, which is pretty sad because they make some pretty damn good games
Ethos why dont you do any political commentary from a gamer's perspective i know it may seem out of your realm but you are well spoken and could potentially bring you a new stan base
A "Retroactivist" episode, where apparently a game that's barely 6 years old is "retro". Holy shit people are ruining everything retro for the sake of a fad.
Sorry, but Binary Domain was just shit, no matter how many cool robots they crammed in it. I don't care how good the story is, (which I'd argue is not very good), but the gameplay is pure ass.
There was also something brilliant in how Binary Domain structured it's dub, which in a way that contributed to the story idea of an international team operating within a foreign land.

I swear if Binary Domain gets a sequel announced at E3 it would be a god send.
that kd gif was perfectly used
An insanely underrated sci-fi shooter if I do say so myself. Love the sci-fi elements and the cutscenes, that's just begging to be made into a movie!
Disgree 100% with the headshots part, it was one of the funniest parts of the game for me destroy their head and turn them against each other(thats what happens when you do that).
Asife of that, great review!
Editing is getting waaaaay better man
I got this game the day it came out I loved it I still got it it was a great shame there was no sequel
Hell Yeah! Binary Domain, Puppeteer, Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom! These games deserve better!
I was in the exact same position. I've seen the name Binary Domain pop up over the years but for some reason it just registers in my brain as "Bionic Commando" type game and I just write it off. breh how is max payne 3 a hidden gem
>Hidden Gems
>Rage
:/
Singularity redeemed you, though.
I mean Rage was pretty short. To me it's a HG cus well I've haven't heard anyone talk about it.
these are on PC too
No one cares m8

that game has been sitting in my steam library untouched yet for quite a while actually.
We need to get the message out to SEGA somehow that there is actually a hunger for a Binary Domain sequel. Just like their Yakuza series I feel like Binary Domain is more popular now than it was when it originally released. Plus it was visually brilliant in 2012. Socom on ps2 was one of the first games to have voice-controlled squad mates.
The voice acting was really cheesy, but i adored the gameplay and the aesthetics! I am a sucked for anything futuristic/sci-fi, and especially when it comes to really cool looking hi-tech weaponry! fucking great hidden gem of a game, also fuck the truck jump qte.
Valkyrie Profile is one of the most underrated PS1 titles. Awesome story, soundtrack, gameplay, art style, and voice acting.Would like to see a retro activist on it.
I played the demo on Xbox 360 and completely forgot all about it, I've been searching this game for years! Thank you Ethos :)
I ended up passing on this game by my nostalgia for ssx, but I might pick it up now thanks to this video
First played this game in 2015 on Xbox, loved it so much, one of my favourite third person shooters.
You have to cover Singularity Ethos, it's criminal how forgotten and underrated it is.
Had an overnight shift and I just finished. Thanks for the video Ethos, it was dope
i played this game and dispite not knowing anything at all i anjoy every last second of it
is really underrated
dang, 2012 feels like such a long time ago for me
"imagine watching matrix like that"... this is funny because I went to see matrix because it was rainy day during summer vacations... I had no idea what it was... it's my fav movie of all time.
Ethos, do Kingdom of amalur: the reckoning. Incredable gameplay in that game.
This game looks like it has some funny moments in it. I might have to go pick this game up.
5:50 THE POWER OF THE CLOUD
The way you make these videos, for example the way you use music in some of the intros and outros, makes me think that you deserve better in terms of attention as well.
im not sure if ethos did a video on Vanquich...but a retroactivist vid on that game would be DOPE
I found it for $5 in the bargain bin a few years back, really good game.
1:55 I know it's a joke, but what's Trump got to do with it? He would've stepped down from Presidency long before 2080.
That is exactly how I watched first Matrix and I had low expectations for Mass Effect.
I bet that this game will get few new buys now. And I thank you for that...Btw my second most favourite underrated game is Spec ops: The line
damn.... I have this game in my steam library and i didnt even know. Great vid I might try it out
Great content just found your channel.
Piewert hi welcome to the channel. :)
The fact that this awesome game is probably never gonna get a sequel makes me sad.
I peeped this some years ago only because it was a ps plus game and man was ever glad to have ps plus.
Thanks to Ps plus I discover this great game, I really hope for a sequel.
played this back on PS3 it was free for PS plus and it even had multiplayer but i doubt the servers are populated anymore.
*reads the title*
Me: Yes it fucking did deserve a LOT better; Fucking loved that game so god damn much once I found it at a store, it was well worth my damn time.
I might get this for pc, looks like a fun game
i love this game. great call.
I wish more people played it. It was soo fun but nobody played it on PC.

Great vid as always Ethos! ;)

i tried the demo on ps3 years ago, it was aight but totaly forgot bout it... maybe ill try it on pc
hell's yeah!
No sequel sadly and wish it was co op
What studio is behind this game? They have alot of potential for future games.
Nukanator10 Ryu Ga Gotoku Studios. They make the immenstly amazing Yakuza series.
It was basically an anime, still waiting for part 2 ;-;
A second game with these sales? Yeah, no.
i bought the gsm3 but haven't got around to it, i'll start after getting Alan Wake done
The game flew under the radar because Sega marketed it like shit.
Great game, better than the many games that are praised alot like Uncharted and the last of us. Srry this is better imo especially more fun to play
So glad PS plus gave me this amazing game.
Gotta take a look at Vanquish ethos its pretty damn good
At least Steam is giving it another chance.
Great!
and it's only 15 bucks on steam? 👀
love Sega
Its an awesome game.
the ps3 version dosnt have any frame rate problems i can see
You know xplay did a review on it
Ubisoft overhypes their games and has ads EVERYWHERE about them, and then it's a downgrade, I don't think everyone would really see the downgrade if it wasn't so "out there" in your face everywhere u look
does anyone know if u can play it on XBox One
It's not currently on the BC list I'm afraid.
I was interested In this game when it came out but my finances weren't in check so I had to pass.
Why Bethesda for a Terminator game?
Because they had (have?) the licence and made a few Terminator games in the 90s
www.rockpapershotgun.com/2016/01/13/have-you-played-bethesdas-terminator-future-shock/
I want binary domain 2 do you?
this game is old
That's sort of the point, hence "Retroactivist" :P
:P
All he had to say was "creators of yakuza" to make me understand why it didn't sell well in the states. They're pretty terrible at merketing over in America, which is pretty sad because they make some pretty damn good games
This game was tits bro.
what does that symbol in every video you make mean?
But seriously. There are games that have gone under the radar, yet accumulate a cult because they are gems. There's always a taste for everyone.
Ethos why dont you do any political commentary from a gamer's perspective i know it may seem out of your realm but you are well spoken and could potentially bring you a new stan base
That worked out so well for JonTron :P
Sydney Butler good point
i saw hxh without hearing any of the hype
A "Retroactivist" episode, where apparently a game that's barely 6 years old is "retro". Holy shit people are ruining everything retro for the sake of a fad.
i disagree it was very mediocre
Sorry, but Binary Domain was just shit, no matter how many cool robots they crammed in it. I don't care how good the story is, (which I'd argue is not very good), but the gameplay is pure ass.
