What a contrast to see all those incredible films compared to what you see at most retail stores, if they even carry physical media anymore. Hats off to Criterion, Arrow Video, Kino Lorber and others for keeping the flame alive!
Great footage, Elliot! Jealous that you got to go to NY. I've still never been over that way, and it looks like their B&N is stocked to the brim! Thanks for sharing, pal. Looking forward to what you picked up!
What a coincidence!! Today I just came back from a 12 day trip to New York. And of course I visited several Barnes & Nobels in NY. The one in Union Square, 5th Avenue, Warren Street and one between W 82nd and 83rd Street. Being a German it is pretty hard to get cheap Criterion Collection movies. So I got 10 Criterion titles: Some Like It Hot, Gates of Heaven/Vernon, Florida, All That Jazz, Hoop Dreams, The Player, Short Cuts, Memories of Murder, All About Eve, Being John Malkovich and Bicycle Thief.
I went to NYC a couple years ago and was kicking myself so hard that I didn't visit BNN while there. The Union Square selection blows my local's out of the water!
Looks like you had a great time! What an outstanding selection in those stores. My store’s collection is relegated to two front-facing panels now. Used to have aisles.
Wow. I envy you! I would love to do that. I really appreciated all your shows during this sale. I got a bunch of titles and now started a new list for the end of the year sale. Thank you
When I visited NY in 2019, I visited 3 or 4 different stores and picked up roughly 25 discs. I felt like I was smuggling contraband back into the UK. Didn't manage to get to the Union Square one, that looks amazing. Look forward to seeing what you snagged in the next video 😎
Cool video. As soon as I saw the Flatiron building I knew exactly where you were. My sister took me to NYC a few years ago. Hope you had fun there. I sure did when I was there. That was quite an interesting tidbit about Paris, Texas. Kwinky dink, I'm actually in said town.
I'd love the opportunity to go to New York, and i'd certainly love the opportunity to stock up on some of those Criterions whilst there! Great video, looking forward to seeing what you picked up!
Hey man ... glad you made it to NYC. The Union Square store is my spot for all things Criterion. There was a great selection at the beginning of July but by last few days it was very picked through. The Criterion Offices are mere blocks away from that store btw ... maybe it has something to do with their awesome stock levels.
God that Criterion section is gorgeous. My girlfriend and I were supposed to go to NYC in June 2020 but ya know. Now I definitely want to go in July when we do go.
I live in the New York area and have been to that Barnes & Noble several times. I went there the second to last day of the criterion sale and wondered why the shelves were pretty light. I hope you had fun in the city.
Hey, spotted Twenty Four Eyes and 24 Frames. Watched those the last two days. Love these shelves in stores. My location isn't like this but has a decent selection
Awesome video! Glad you enjoyed the Big Apple. The thing that I absolutely hate is that B&N holds up in releasing the new titles whenever the Sale begins. On another note, I’m really excited for your haul video.
Love the B&N in Union sq, I’m visiting NYC next month so I’ll be headed there, and also BookOff on w 45th street, which has a huge second hand criterion section 👍🏼
Shame you couldn't get the blu-ray for The Worst Person in the World, such a good movie; I saw it twice in the theater! I need to check out the other two films in Trier's Oslo trilogy.
It’s not the same. The Criterion does have the edge as it’s from a more recent restoration. Fingers crossed there will be a 4K UHD soon though. I imagine WB will distribute it in Europe and maybe elsewhere.
I was at B&N for their 50% the 5th ave shop you went to, picked up The Killing, Uncut Gems, Good Morning. Is the sale still through August or did it end? I went a couple weeks back.
Elliot flies all the way to New York to spend a bank-breaking amount of money on Criterion Blu-Rays. Get's back to England and puts disc in player. "Sorry, this disc is not compatible with your region'.
@@ElliotCoen it’s a complete mess, mate. Absolute carnage. Bills will go up to a point people won’t even be able to watch their bloody criterion blu-ray’s because their electric bills are that steep. Wishing you all the best in this tough time

Oh that’s great! I’m glad you had a good trip and got a nice selection of movies!
Love how much joy this gave u. Looks awesome!
Thank you Tony!
Welcome to Murica! And congrats on surviving New York City!
We did see some crazy things in the streets but we did indeed live to tell the tale!
I went to this same barnes and nobles in Union Sqaure around a month and a half ago, while on a trip to NYC
Great video! If you tested positive for Covid, Barnes & Noble would have to contact every customer who purchased a copy of Barry Lyndon in NY! 🤣
Oh gosh, yes! Maybe I’m a wanted person for endangering the cinephile community in the local area 😁
I love this video so much. Great format man. Can’t wait to see more like these.
Thanks, Paul! If there’s interest, I can do some shopping videos like this in the local shops here in the UK

What fun! Great to see you out and about and congrats to you and Becky.

Such a big selection. Picked up a lot of good movies.

Congrats to you and Becky. Hope you will come back some day
Great POV haul for us sitting far away and your repetitive picks are worthy
Great video. Welcome to the states if it's your first time. Those B&N look fancy compared to mine.
Wow. I wish the B&Ns in my area had selections like that.

Absolutely brilliant stuff 👏 👌 👍
Beats a Monday in CEX 🤣🤣
I definitely felt more clean here than I do when I go to CEX!
"Touch every copy of Barry Lyndon" really made my day :)
Lucky you. Nice trip.

That location is great. They never have everything, but they def have more than others here
Even picked up a commander box!
Good spot!
That store has an amazing selection, I wish the B&N stores in my area had that.

Shame you couldn't get the blu-ray for The Worst Person in the World, such a good movie; I saw it twice in the theater! I need to check out the other two films in Trier's Oslo trilogy.
MUBI has all three films.
Is the transfer on the UK HMV Premium Collection Barry Lyndon comparable to the US Criterion ?
It’s not the same. The Criterion does have the edge as it’s from a more recent restoration. Fingers crossed there will be a 4K UHD soon though. I imagine WB will distribute it in Europe and maybe elsewhere.
Them having everything in stock makes sense considering their offices are on Park Avenue.
Great point! I would have loved to have a quick visit to their offices while I was there
@@ElliotCoen if I go back, I'm gonna try to schedule a tour if they do them.
I hope that the Criterion's that you picked up in New York where ones that are not available in the U.k.
God I wish there was a store like that in Exeter
Fun post!
Man it does suck that most of these aren't available in the UK.

I’m not sure I would call Election a coming of age film or a drama. But that’s a huge selection at that b&n.
election has some dark moments as I remember
@@paulb111 not enough to justify a drama
@@AM-ec9qv eh, it’s how I categorise it in my mind but sure. Let’s settle on comedy drama :)

Drooool! 🤤🤤🤤
And you couldn't even bring an extra bag for me !!!
amazed that people still use blu-rays in 2022
Why?
Nice to see the cost of living crisis isn’t doing you too dirty mate

I feel like the terrible audio would have been fitting for a ‘criterion closet’ video
Haha so true. What a burn!
Oh man, a magic tcg player and a criterion collector??? Usually people have ONE really expensive hobby, you're pushing it, Mr.Moneybags!
0:15 That's not a Soy Face, it's a Joy Face!
Damn. My Barnes & Noble sucks in comparison.
I cringe every time I see those damn spider locks around those box sets. What is B&N thinking? Nobody is going to buy those damaged box sets.
