  • Wow! So much fun, so much learning. ELEY sent me to their testing range to document what it's like. Well, it's amazing. ELEY Tenex is the gold standard of 22lr ammunition. We tested 18 different lots of Tenex and moved on to test the best 6 to prove their performance. Shots are measured electronically with pin point accuracy so you know exactly how well each lot preforms.
    Take the ELEY tenex Challenge! ELEY will send you 5000 rounds if their ammo doesn't beat theirs! WOW!!!

    Outside to outside 10 shot groups:

    Great experience and video. I didn't realize there were variables in the manufacturing process that they either didn't understand or can not economically control. It also tells me that the best lots never make it out to the general public. With all the testing and lot control, the best lots are kept for the "special" people.

      Best lot is somewhat of a misnomer. It is not necessarily one lot is better than the next. It is specific to that individual rifle. Two rifles from the same manufacturer, made on the same day, still have variances and will therefore like a type of ammo or specific lot number of that ammo better. Accuracy with a .22 typically involves a lot of trial and error with a lot of different ammo just to see what is working and what isn’t. I have a Savage that shoots fairly cheap CCI standard more accurately than 6 different match ammo’s I tested. Have not had the time to test different lot numbers, but will now.

    When I was playing paintball competition. As a team, we would always shoot the same 'lot' of paintballs and have them matched to the right sized barrel. It makes a big difference! Great video Jim!

    I grew up on a ranch just a few miles east of Winters. I moved to the Dallas area after college but went back often for hunting until our family sold the property in 1993.
    Great hunting area! Deer, turkey, quail, dove, varmints.
    I am surprised to see this facility there. Not much else in Winters.

    I drove past this place dozens of times going between San Antonio and Lubbock. I never saw the small red Eley sign. This is another reason to stop at Winters - for the Eley test range (hope it is still open) and the Winter's Dove Fest in September. Thanks for your vid - wish I had seen it sooner.

    Holy shit my groups from my cheap savage mark II fv with cci standard velocity at 53yds are identical to all of those on average and I'm shooting bipod/bag and frustrated with the imperfection. This is an eye opener. My $200 rifle shoots like those rifles with regular ammo. WOW.

      I talked to eley manufacturing years ago, & at that time the only difference was it was "sorted" into the different grades with test barrel.. i doubt its any different now, except that now they have more "machines" making the ammo.. now you find which machine and then which velocity your rifle likes

    • @duncanmcneill7088
      @duncanmcneill7088 ปีที่แล้ว

      My understanding is that for a batch to be labelled as Tenex it has to perform to a certain standard in all FOUR of Eley’s test barrels. If it doesn’t meet the Tenex criteria then it either will be labelled as Match or Team depending on its performance.
      So it’s entirely possible that you can find a batch of cheaper Eley ammunition which shoots well in 2 or 3 of the their test barrels but not in all 4 - but which shoots well in YOUR particular barrel. Personally, I spend a significant portion of my range time testing batches of ammunition (Tenex, Match, R50, Special Match, Centre X, Midas).
      Statistically, a random batch of Tenex should outperform a random batch of Match or Team in a randomly selected barrel.
      However, I have also had some batches of selected Tenex which were very good from the shoulder - and some that were less so...

    I hate to tell you this (actually, I don't) but my Remington 597 with a free-floating sporter barrel, CCI standard velocity ammunition, and a $22 bipod with otherwise stock everything and a $40 CVLife 6-24 scope shoots groups like these or better, always, at 50 yards sitting at a folding table. The only modification on the gun is a tube extension on the barrel to support a weight on the end. How do I go about doing this ELEY challenge?

    Jim -- Thanks for your video. From the comments below, you must have an amazing subscriber list of National Champions and Olympic caliber shooters commenting on your results. On a serious note, who would have thought that Eley's North American Test Facility resided in humble little Winters, TX? After watching your video, I spoke to Dan Killough by phone last week. He couldn't have been nicer. And now I'm scheduled to test my Anschutz 1710 (54 action) later this week. Lucky for me, I'm sort of "local." Winters, TX is only a 3 1/2 hour drive away. Best wishes....

    • @22lrmarksmen
      @22lrmarksmen  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      How did it go?

    • @sluggoII
      @sluggoII 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The best 10-shot Tenex group for my Anschutz 1710 (54 action) was 16.6 mm, but subsequent groups of the same lot spread quite a bit. Because the Anschutz 1710 technically has a "factory" barrel, Dan suggested batch testing Eley Edge on the 2nd day rather than Tenex. According to Dan, Eley Edge is designed to maximize performance in "factory" barrels. The best 10-shot Edge group was 17.0 mm. But a few multiple Edge groups (same lot) were slightly tighter overall than a few multiple Tenex groups (same lot). So I ended-up doing a bulk purchase of Eley Edge. Dan and his staff are incredibly knowledgeable and very patient with a rimfire neophyte like me. What a great experience! What a great time-saver! Thanks again for your video...

    I'm totally surprised by this video. I have a 1962 remington 512 sportmaster with a simple athlon talos 4-16 mrad scope that just this weekend on Caldwell tack driver bag shot a 14 mm, 15 round group in a 7-10 mph wind outdoors. I guess I'm not doing so bad with a rifle I've owned since I was 8 years old that is totally stock even the trigger. I was using Eley target yellow box which my old gun likes best so far. I wonder how much better it might shoot with some expensive ammo, LOL This the most expensive stuff I ever fed that gun and its been spoiled!

    • @22lrmarksmen
      @22lrmarksmen  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's incredible! Was that center to center? My 13.3mm was outside to outside. They also tell people you'll usually see better results in a stock rather than in the test facility.

    Hmmm....agreed, this makes a lot sense. I’m trying to decide between Lapua or Eley test facility. I’m leaning Lapua because my rifle loves sk and center-x but have only shot a couple boxes of Tenex. Any words of wisdom?

    • @jimhamilton3544
      @jimhamilton3544 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would go to the testing center that is closest to you ! My Anschutz 64, and CZ455 loves SK LONG RANGE at 100 & 200yds. but it also loves ELEY MATCH 🤔 but not so much with ELEY TENEX 🤭 Either ammo company will give you the tightest groups after lot testing. Lot testing is the key to tighter groups not which ammo maker you think is better.
      All things considered do you want to pay a premium price ie (around $5-8+)/ per box more for Eley Tenex when it shoots any better groups than most Lapua Ammo ?
      When Eley talks about world Championships that Eley has won remember that is almost exclusively in the Olympics in The Biathlon ! In the last winter Olympics in Soul Korea their was know other rifle from any country represented but Anschutz and they use ELEY AMMO made in Germany 😉 Who shoots theses Olymplc rifles outside of the Olympics. 🤣
      Eley has a lock on these single shot open sights target rifles which can range from $5k to over $10k+
      Eley and Anschutz really push this world championship narrative to the fullest but it is a really not representative of Eley ammo for American bench-rest competition.
      If you think about it that is close to false advertising of what Eley .22 ammo really is for bench rest and NRL shooting in the U. S.
      Sorry for this long rant 😂😂😂
