- Dive into the life of Mr. Ngoc, an 82-year-old Vietnamese man who thrives despite decades without sleep. Located just moments away from my home in Hoi An, I uncover the remarkable ways he manages to live a full life under such extreme conditions. From sunrise in his lush rice fields to late nights distilling traditional rice wine, this journey is nothing short of astonishing.
We'll explore how Mr. Ngoc keeps his mind and body active, the impact of his insomnia, and the secrets behind his resilience. Prepare for a story of endurance and culture that challenges the very essence of human health and sleep.

He's in his 80s, he fought in Vietnam, and he's been married for 60 years, he's just learned to sleep with his eyes open.
I had a high-school teacher who taught in Nam. He loved to point out how he learned to sleep with his eyes open while out there. He mentioned how agent orange is some real nasty stuff. Other than that, he never spoke of his experience.
People who sleep with their eyes open still know that they're sleeping
My grandpa learned to sleep with one eye open. WWII Vet.
That’s the conclusion I’ve come too
I'll follow these lessons no sleep, a lot alcohol and cigarettes, thus I hope to live 200 years with this healthy lifestyle
Might do better than you think lol
@@willthomsen7569with no sleep he will die
I followed this and Im alrdy 120 years old but I feel like 30 yo. :)
Watched a documentary about this guy a few years ago, towards the end they discovered he takes naps and does sleep, so all seemed a bit pointless in the end 😂
I effing knew it. What a joke.
I mean you would literally die if you didn’t sleep for too long, and it’s a pretty short span of time. There is actually a condition that makes it impossible for the person to ever reach REM sleep and they eventually die young.
Edit: It’s called FFI (Fatal familial insomnia) and it’s extremely rare.
Fatal familia insomnia. A man with it once documented his experiences over the years and in just a few months he had become delirious and insane, eventually dying as a deranged mess.
most people cant think for themselves so it makes sense nobody is pointing out that this is physically impossible.
people are just inherently stupid I suppose.
At 82 years old and smoking 40 cigs a day and drinking strong alcohol every night, he's pretty darn healthy nevertheless.
Man is a war veteran that doesn't sleep. He tends to his property while chain smoking and drinking rice whiskey sun up to sun down, he's a different kind of human
PTSD 100% what you said.
@@joereedsmith1531 i think you misspelled bullshit.
He is exactly like my neighbor who lives across the street from me. American vet with PTSD 💯! He just needs to swear and yell and get the authorities to his house a bit more, and it will be exact.
Sleeping takes 30% of our lives, the guy has already lived more than a 100 yers old person
Dreaming adds 200%, I have lived lifetimes in dreams
@@mostfunnestchannelno you didn't you were dreaming lol
I didn't understand a single word he said and I live thousands of miles away, but it felt like I was listening to my grandfather talk to me throughout a day of yard work.
Usually people who started being unable to sleep at night would only last for about a year before dying. How this guy is still alive after 5 decades of being unable to sleep is baffling to say the least.
He does sleep.
It's nonsense, he sleeps, he just fakes it for some reason.
I bet when there is nobody around he sleeps.
Else he would be dead by now, especially with how much he smokes, the body restores when sleeping.
It’s bs that’s why
@@greenblue6935he only closes his eyes for 5 mins each time . Can you do that
@@Tampafan33he only rests for like 5 mins each time
I have bouts of insomnia. Ive gone 6 days a handful of times. You get sore from never resting certain muscles. When you finally do start to relax there are tremors and 'jump starts' that wake you up again. Its like your brain cant remember how to shut off so drifting to sleep causes a panic reaction. Waking dreams hit you randomly that leave you disoriented and confused. Your eyes hurt. Zero energy and zero motivation. OTC drugs just make it worse and usually fuel more anxiety.
I feel for this guy. I dont know how someone could get use to it but he seems to handle it very well all things considered.
The 'jump starts' or 'Brain shocks' as I call them are the worst..
Your editor is something special, some of the best work I've seen this year with all the extra work they did

@@gone.golfing Of course he does, he sleeps a couple hours per night. It is physically and mentally IMPOSSIBLE for a human to never sleep.

This man will have lived twice the life time of the average person.
Yeah, this guy has gotta be breaking an all time record. He most likely has the highest amount of hours spent consciously in a person's lifetime.
That math doesn't work out
Comentary, editing, music and pace of video is beyond TV productions. This is prime yt content. I'm literally amazed.
Man I am so impressed with your work and channel, 1 year in and 111K subs, super impressive
This was a great video, Andrew. Mr. Ngoc is over twice my age, smokes 1(or 2) packs of cigarettes a day, drinks very strong alcohol, almost never sleeps, and he appears to be quite healthy. Thank you for sharing your time with this amazing gentleman with us.

Hey Andrew, underrated channel man. Keep going bro!
He is a hero. His supernatural is never to sleep to look after people all day and night.
He is not a hero.
He sleeps. The video is clickbait.
It is impossible to never sleep at all and still be alive.
Thanks Andrew! Fantastic video. You're bringing us amazing content.
I’m Vietnamese and I can’t even understand a word he say, thanks god for the caption
Haha it wasn’t that bad but there were definitely some minor mistakes in the captions from what I caught

Keep up with the great work, Andrew! We are very excited to see your next video!
Thanks for the video. This was a great watch. I think I'm going to take a nap now.
He sleeps with his eyes open. You cant live without sleep..
He is seriously one of those medical mysteries that should be studied but i would say it might shorten his life, my guess would be the zoning out is a meditative like state.
Saying all this there was a lady at my dads church who only sleeps 2hrs a day and is in her 60's an has been doing it since a child (doesn't zone out or nap) is an accountant and is always on the go (she says that her parents used to play mahjong all night and the kids would go with them) and has been that way - think some humans are just built differently and environment + genes have a big factor.
Great video and hope him and his family have a prosperous life
Another good doco Andrew, keep up the good work mate
This is interesting! Thank you for sharing, Andrew.
I love the story and the editing..
I remember this guy in a similar video when he was a few years younger and looking at him now he seems to be looking even younger again
Absolutely amazing man....sick bid bro really enjoyed it. Ya got a new sub bro❤
Andrew your content has gotten really really good. Keep it up bro 💯
So either he is just mentally stronger than the insanity we mortals get from prolonged sleep deprivation, or his (ptsd?) nightmares are just too insane to ever fall asleep 😅
He naps/sleeps lol it’s all bogus. Physically, scientifically, and psychologically it is impossible to continue living after a certain amount of time without sleep. After about 24 hours very subtle hallucinations begin, some people often experience “second wind” where you’ve stayed up so long that your sleepiness goes away.
I’ve made it 4 days before. You definitely get auditory hallucinations and see things out of the corner of your eye.
very cool. appreciate your time and effort for this video.
Andrew thank you mate for sharing this with us
I stg I have this same Issue for the last ten years. I used to stay up super late and just enjoyed being active when others were sleep now it’s insanely hard for me to even get a hour of sleep I usually just take 10 minute sit around breaks and get right back to it. Super weird can’t explain it
I also started drink heavy amounts of caffeine at around age 13 I’m 23 now so Idk if that has something to do with it.
Are you tired?
I'm the same. I can work my ass off all day and once everyone else is asleep I am wide awake, even if I was super tired. Issues with my sleep started when I worked midnights, but that was over a decade ago. Apparently my brain needs time to process and work through stuff more than it needs sleep.
@@lestergreen2828 Never only if I’m a passenger in the car
@@Litleakers interesting. So you basically never sleep?
This one left me with such a warm, fuzzy feeling that it is difficult to express adequately. For me, this uncle personifies so much of the national spirit, if I can say such a thing, of Việt Nam.
Great video!! I really enjoyed watching it
Fascinating, and also great documentary
I feel like not being able to sleep would be torture for me and that I would hallucinate like crazy.
Agreed I once had auditorial hallucinations from lack of sleep.
You would be tortured.
People start to hallucinate after 3 or 4 days of zero sleep. He sleeps, the video is clickbait.
I doubt you would feel tired and hallucinate if you don't need to sleep because those are side effects of needing sleep.
I've stayed up for five days straight with zero sleep during a manic episode. I began hallucinating about three days in. I already had sleep issues and was used to staying up for a day or two at a time, easily.
I could hear earwigs and spiders crawling on the walls and saw them pouring inside from a basement window (my friend had a basement apartment I was staying at for a few days). I even met up with a friend I hadn't seen in a few years and when he came over, he was concerned about my behavior. It's not fun. It's not just the hallucinating and mental unease, either. You start feeling like your chest is too tight and you can't take a good breath. It's just awful. You feel like you're dying, physically.
I would just drink and get high if I had ffi
I watched the Drew Binsky vid as soon as it came out. I am really grateful you made this vid becuase the whole situation really intrigued me and I would watch other vids with this guu. Very intriguing
You should do more video documentaries like this, I really like it!
Dude is literally a living breathing autosave 😂😂 I want to learn from this guy!
I find it difficult to believe that he can survive more than a few days without sleeping. How can you actually test it?
there is a documentary done maybe 6 years ago on him, he sleeps, its micro sleep most days but he does get real sleep.
lol, "setting this entire motion in process" 💗💙💚 somewhere around or after 16 minutes i think. Andrew, I LOVE that you included his tobacco-smoking as a potential factor in his health. I don't know what formulations of tobacco products are mostly distributed around Vietnam, but I largely attribute the health-concerns and tarnished reputation of tobacco, to the modern handling of it, and myriad bizarre chemical additives unfortunately part of that modern commercial machinery. Tobacco, originally, and as a plant, is a very special medicinal blessing, and powerful factor of health. Real tobacco is good!
"The tobacco plant, Nicotiana, has probably been responsible for more deaths than any other herb. At present, tobacco smoking is causing over 3 million deaths a year worldwide, and if current smoking trends continue the annual mortality will exceed 10 million by around 2030.1 Add to this the mortality from cancers caused by oral uses and the death toll becomes still higher. Undoubtedly, tobacco is the most important avoidable cause of premature death and disease in the world.2"

I wish that man every blessing in life!❤
Hes actually 27

19:42 This has to be an award-winning portrait.
I enjoyed this one , he’s seems like a good guy and he’s happy, that’s all that matters.
Damn bro, we need to lift our game. 🎉 See u back in the Philippines 🇵🇭 Leah and Blair
Whew, I'm exhausted. I've gotta take a nap!
He's living life to its fullest
Glad he has such a sweet pup 🎂
I think someone cover similar story before and appear the man did fall asleep for an hour or few hours.
Surely he must take naps in-between. The problem most likely progressed from staying up late or all night. After a while the body acclimatises and becomes harder to feel sleepy by a certain time in the night as most would normally do.
I have a neighbour who finds it difficult to sleep at night and it's because of the same habit of staying up late or all night reading or whatever. He's been doing it so long it's become ingrained. He would eventually go to bed around 3-4 in the morning and I hardly think he gets a good 1-2 hours of sleep if any. Ironically he says it's normal no matter how I tell him no it's not normal.
Very interesting and very strong man
I had insomnia for about 38 days. Ii was absolute hell, I was in tears because my body was constantly trying to sleep, but I'd startle up the second I dozed off feeling like my body forgot how to breathe. Fuck me man. I really thought I might go insane. I got a check up and Dr gave me a few benzos and a cpap and it just stopped. I've always been a little afraid it will come back.
Edit: Is this Bolo Yeung's mother??
HE'S 82?! Damn, he looks pretty good!
actually, looks amazing. especially out in the sun all day, smoking like a chimney, and no sleep? is he an android?
Im more impressed about how he can live 80+ years and have been smoking 40 cigarettes a day most of his life
This is a tough dude. What a legend. ❤
His secret is chain smoking 😂
Awesome video. 😊
great video andreew
The term would be banana brandy if its distilled.... whiskey has to be made from made from grain and aged in a barrel bourbon or American whiskey has to have corn and be aged in barrel
Marlboro or camel and Kratom and poppy plants probably plays a big part in this.
What a remarkable man.
He is tough! Respect.
Remarkable man
I wonder? If you never sleep you probably need more of a caloric intake. Wonder if he does eat more or not? Very interesting! Great video and work Andrew! Great quality!
There is a Japanese man that does similary, but he sleeps in 3 hour intervals, very interesting fella wouldn't mind seeing him again!
My Grandpa smoked all his life, he moved into our home when he was 85. He knew no one liked cigarettes so he just gave it up, he passed away a few months later.
And he wasn't sick?
Perfect Life 🙏
Top Notch work by you and your team btw!
An old VC, powered by cigarettes and moonshine… No wonder we lost.
A true soldier
He never sleeps but always wears his pyjamas, just in case.
Reguardless of the sleep thing... we have just seen... the most amazing rice wine ever. Genetics is NUM 1 in age maxs.
I went twenty four days like that, this man is tougher than you'll ever know.
Arnold Schwarzenegger would have loved that. He said before in interviews that he thought sleep was one of the biggest waste of time in life. In terms of productivity (I.E. what you can do, or rather how much you'd love to do) he's right. Sure, sleep is essential for humans (the majority of us, that is). However, most of us only have maybe 12 hours a day of efficient productivity... and pushed beyond that it becomes tiring, less efficient, and even risky for your health (at least in the longer terms). We're not "made" to constantly do things, our bodies need rest.
The condition of this man is indeed extreme, but something allows him to keep on going nonetheless.
Great store hands down
This guy is basically living in heaven. He is Poison by dioxins fighting a war where he's debilitated in his hand and God says no the Americans are not going to take away your future they're not going to take away your family they're not going to take away your livelihood I'm going to give you all the time that you would have slept to work to be prosperous to be happy to be fulfilled I'm going to give it back to you I think this is a blessing from God
That man can smoke. He’s even got a smokin hand. We tried to take it from him back in Nam but the man wouldn’t give it up.
The most amazing part is that he's a smoker too! While sleeping is the only time that heavy smokers don't smoke. That means that he smokes at least 1/3 more than the average smoker, hasn't slept in 60 years and works throughout the night, yet he's 82 !
Ptsd and agent orange might've be the recipe for his condition. He must've contracted agent organge, which then mutated to his advantage.
Sleeping comes down to chemicals. Creatures can adapt in many different ways. I believe with the right training and disapline, you can get your body to rewire itself kind of thing to no longer need sleep. Studies were done on temple monks and they only need around 4 hours of sleep a night and they're fine. I'm pretty much the same way because I've fought sleep my entire life because it's a chore to me. I want to live life alot. So I don't live on 8 hours of sleep at night at all. And I'm fine. But napping is something I do. Micro sleeping. Aircraft controllers have rooms where they can sleep for 15 minutes because micro sleeping makes a huge differeance in your ability to think and function.
As others said, he probably takes naps. Dude is the Grand Master on Power Naps!
But, it's physically impossible to live that long without any form of sleep.
Like, sleep deprivation *is* a form of torture, and it can lead to irreparable damage, mentally and physically.
That said, it takes no merit out of him, being that old, having gone through what he has, being more active than 99% of everyone here (me included) and having little to no sleep as we know it!
Those micro sleeps are what I call dcs or deep chill stasis it's more of a meditative state that can make you feel at least slightly rested
hes a warrior
This seems like the area around the Ban-na hill tourist mountain which is gorgeous and I wish I was free to mix and roam around these parts.

iam heavily speed addicted i sleep every sunday. but i never was bored, there is allways something to learn
I don't understand how he isn't hallucinating and delirious. The entire mind can be completely taken over by delirium by day 5 without sleep, for some it even happens by day 4. He must sleep even if it's just an hour here and there.
Andrew uses Sonny’s film crew for sure
