    It is difficult not to feel defeated when you give your pets the world and it just doesn't seem to be enough. You are doing everything in your power to keep your piggies healthy and happy, but just like people sometimes you can do everything right and still have illnesses or health issues pop up! I am so glad that Butters has continued to do well on her pain meds and am sending all of the positive thoughts and well wishes I can your way for a smooth passing of those stones!!! Watching Huckle and Berry together was so precious.

    Oh no!! You have had such a hard time lately with illnesses, I feel bad for you and the sickly piggies. Fingers crossed Butterscotch will pass the stones on her own and both her and Berry will return to full health 😍
    I understand how frustrating it is when you do everything in your power to keep your pets healthy and then in steps lousy genetics and screws your whole world up.
    You are a wonderful person, you aren't harsh or stuck up at all, you are very knowledgeable and helpful to all piggy owners here. Keep on being you, your dedication is heart warming🤗

    You're right, this is the reality and most people just don't get it. When I hear people in a panic because they can't afford a vet visit, or they don't have a ride to the vet and they are just wanting to treat themselves, it makes me crazy. Because of poor planning many of these piggies out there end up suffering. I sure hope people listen to what you have to say and take it seriously. We're sending all the best wishes to both of your sweet girls. Get better soon babies!

      Well I can't afford a vet visit but I make sure to keep an eye on my girls because I wouldn't want anything to happen to them. If anything does happen my grandparents can help out. It's not because of poor planning it is because my mom's job just stopped paying well.

      +Ems.glitterful.world.04 its good your grandparents can help. Its good to keep an eye on them but that doesn't mean nothing will ever happen. if you watch her video you see she does everything in her power to keep the pigs happy and healthy. and life just happens. look into Pet insurance if you have it in your country.

    people just dont realize the reality of owning pets. just because they are small animals and not a dog or a cat it doesnt mean they dont require the same treatment. when my rat Nes got sick, i took him to the vet. cost me about $85 for the visit and antibiotics and people thought i was crazy. "its just a rat. it will only live for a couple years anyway." thats what i kept hearing. i dont care what people think, these ratties are my babies and i will do what i can to take care of them.

    I totally know how you feel. I've gotten guinea pigs at a young age and raised them on a well balance diet and provided them with the best I could. I also rescued a guinea pig last year he was 2 years old and he didn't have a very good life style; he was living in a cat carry cage and have mouth sores and ingrown teeth. In the past year I've had to take him to the vet several time for cysts, bladder stones. I am just lucky that in New Zealand it is a lot cheaper for guinea pigs to be seen by a vet and be treated.

    You do a really good job! I have started setting a vet fund aside myself. I figure I spend at least $5 a week or more on junk food, why not put that in an account for the pigs. Plus, it causes me to spend less on junk food which helps me lol

    • @skinnypigs1
      @skinnypigs1  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh that is great! It is true, isn't hard to set a tiny bit aside that would be going towards pointless things like that. I know I spend enough on junk food too haha.

    Is very expensive to keep guinea pig. I have a male guinea and I fix him it cost me $ 160. I bought him only $37. I have to fix him so that he can have a female company . Male and female guinea pig live harmony . Love .......guinea pig . Your such a loving owner to your pet.

  • @RaineLovesLondon
    @RaineLovesLondon 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Oh bless you :( You seem to be going through so many pig problems right now.
    I too would suggest making a guinea piggy bank (as I call it) and stashing cash away every month for when emergencies arise. It's the best way imo, better than pet insurance :] People do it all the time for their children, and in my opinion, guinea pigs are like kids.
    Saying that though, those vet bills seem expensive as hell! Me and my boyfriend take our pigs to a private vet in London (UK) and surgeries and meds are half the price you say, even after converting CAD-GBP! :o
    Maybe pet insurance is the way to go across the pond...

  • @MarlaSauermann
    @MarlaSauermann 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    this is so true. Over the past years i got a few guineapigs, and everyone in my family is callign me crazy because I have paid SO MUCh money for vet visits. Mites, a C-Section, now went to let a new piggie being checked cuz of weird breathing. PEts are not TOYS. they are living beings and you care for them clean them and feed them, but when its about making sure they are healthy and LIVE long, lots of people say : why would you spend so much money on a guineapig. well I dont know why do you take your kids to the doctor then? piggies feel pain too :/

    I've watched a lot of your videos and just fell in love with guinea pigs. I just love the sounds they make. It sounds so sweet and it's a good feedback to know what's up, as you so wonderfully explain in your sounds video.
    I previously had rats. But for approx. the last 2 years I have been without pets.
    Usually, guinea pigs are associated with children, as pets for children, a child's first
    pet etc. I wonder why and should I feel weird to get guinea pigs as a grown up guy?
    I'd like a C&C cage like yours are. Unfortunately, C&C grids aren't sold here and all the pre-built "guinea pig" cages have closed tops and seem small. Thanks, love your videos.

    I'd rather here an honest view than misleading information about the reality about owning a certain pet. Honesty is far more helpful in the long run. It gives people a better chance of being prepared. Wishing Butterscotch the very best, I hope she is able to pass the stones.

  • @precious014e

    I know not a lot of people think about it, but they do offer insurance for animals and it isn't very expensive for the benefits you get. I had VPI for years and it was roughly $200/year but they covered 90% of the vet bill. You were only responsible for covering the cost of the meds and that 10% they didn't cover. This saved me a tremendous amount of money. The only downfall of it is that you have to pay upfront at the vet and then your vet signs a paper (VPI supplied it) that states what the diagnosis is and along with that you send a copy of your bill for that day. I really liked their service but I haven't had it since 2012 so I am not sure how much it has changed. Right now, I have a credit card that has 0% interest for 6 months on any veterinary related service or animal food so I just use that and break up the bills if I need to. My elderly cockatiel (over 20 yrs old) and my guinea pig both fell ill in the same month and I spent over $1000 that month plus the 30 minute drive back and forth multiple times a week for about 6 weeks. It can be draining but I would do anything for my animals.

    sweetie, I have learned so much from your videos. You are an inspiration. I think the things you commented on about unexpected illnesses with piggies needed to be said. My three little piggies have been better cared for since I began watching you. When my Pippysqueaker's died last July, I almost gave up. He had to have surgery at 6 years old. His breast nodule was swollen and had a blockage. You had a piggy going through a lot then too. You gave me hope that I was doing the right things. I adopted 2 more piggies frome other places and am up to three now from the original 2. I would like to thank you for your continued support and inspiration and give a litte back to you. You are awesome. Don't ever stop being you!
    Lynn

    *hug*, caring for sick piggies is stressful. I read yesterday that for humans riding in the back seat of a rollercoaster can help pass kidney stones! Build the pigs one or a train with rattly carriages perhaps? :) Also, apparently new research shows hydroxycitric acid found in Garcinia Cambogia and Hibiscus subdariffa may help dissolve the stones. www.uh.edu/news-events/stories/2016/July/08082016New-Treatment-for-Kidney-Stones.php
    I don't know how safe Hydroxycitric acid is for pigs but there are studies that show low toxicity in rats which are rodents like guinea pigs. Ask your vet. www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S027869150400153X

    Poor piggie :( I know just how you feel, my piggie Pandora had a vet trip yesterday and she's got a stone. Just makes me feel awful even though I give them the best possible life I can but she still got sick. She's not that far off 7 years old though so she's starting to show her age a bit. I've rescued all my pigs, they all had bad starts so I can't account for what damage might have been done before. This was a really important message though, if you take on pets always plan for there health costs it is so important! I hope butterscotch does okay me and my piggies are sending her love and positive thoughts :)

    You do so great with your piggies and you do so exceptionally great for them!!! Like nobody I have ever seen!!! I thought I spoiled my cats too much but wow I need to catch up and I am not sure I can... lol you are doing exceptionally great!!! There is nothing more you can do!!! You go above and beyond for them just like they were your children and that’s what you are suppose to do when you have pets and a lot of people don’t understand that!! But you do exceed that and that’s way better than anybody else!!!! I love the dory and shark prints... so cute!!! I even like the blue with the brown bears and would like to see that one out sometime... good luck and I hope all continues to go well...

    I love your videos! We are a rat family, with currently 18 rescued rat kids that do cost a fortune at the vet and they go their a lot!! However, on the 13th we are adding 2 skinny pigs to the mix... I have watched just about every video you have made and have taken quite a few notes. I have my medical box ready and everything else you recommended is either here or on its way. I feel more prepared than ever. Hope your piggies get better soon. If you can't vet them - don't get them!!!

    I'm a new subscriber. We inherited the neighbors piggy who got out and lived in our garden for months very happily until the cranky lady next door scooped him up in a net when she saw him. We weren't prepared so we got the cage from the people (they didn't want him anymore) and went shopping. We are newbies and don't have a lot of $ but we will do everything we can to give him a nice life. We named him Pascal, he's a tri-color and adorable. We are new fans of yours!

    I'm sorry to hear about her stones :( I know exactly how you feel. We had both our boys pass away at the beginning of the year from it. We thought it was our diet so our new pigs are on a strict low calcium diet now but the vet said could have been breeding issues as well. It's an awful feeling because you try so hard to prevent it but sometimes for whatever reason were dealt this card. You're doing your best and I commend you for it! Please keep us posted and I hope she passes them ok :)

    You are beyond a first class piggie Mum things do happen no matter how well you care for your pets. I too wonder how people can neglect theirs pets and nothing happens to them whilst those who do their best and research about their pets do get problems. I agree about how much pets cost. I only have 2 piggies as I only have room and the funds to keep 2 in the manner I wish to. They are very spoilt and get the best of everything and are in a 2x6 c&c. I get so much contentment and happiness seeing them enjoy life but am always thinking how I can improve their lives more. I still have so much to learn. Thank you for your great videos your chatty cleaning ones are my particular favourite but I love them all.

    I've had my guinea pig Stella for about 4 years now and she's only had to go to the vet once! She ended up having a bladder infection. But she is doing fantastic now!

    Awesome video I am new to your channel. I love your hay! I get mine from a farm gate and the strands are so long the girls spread it absolutely everywhere 😒 you make cleaning look soo easy when I do that stuff spills absolutely everywhere the cage looks clean by the end of it but the rooms an absolute mess! Well guess the girlies matter more. Also do you spot clean? If not how often do you do a full clean

    Don't take this the wrong way... but I think it is better that your guinea pigs are getting sick. It is better than those people who don't have a vet find and don't know what the signs are of things like bladder stones. You can help your pigs and if the pigs that aren't taken care of got sick they wouldn't be taken care of and would die that way

  • @Evelyn-nl3hz
    @Evelyn-nl3hz 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Do you think that rabbits are more prone to sickness than Guinea pigs/the other way around, or are they the same? I have two rescue rabbits, that are only about 8 months old.

    I used coconut oil on my pig when his eye was swollen and they thought it'd have to be removed. I dropped it into his eye a few times a day over a weekend and he still has his eye! Wonder if it would help Berry keep her abscess away?

    I can definitely attest to everything that was said in this video. We have quite a few pigs and for a long time we can go with no issues (we've got for upwards of 2 years), but then something happens and you need funds. Recently one of our pigs had a hurt foot. Turns out that it was just some swelling, but the vet visit for that was about $250. Then we had another that just stopped eating and his visit and medications were somewhere around $275. It might have been a month in between the two occurrences. The visit alone runs $80, then the xrays are easily $120+, then the medications, etc. Vet care for these little guys is definitely not cheap. PLEASE consider that before you decide to adopt.

    I don't think you are stern. People don't realize how high maintenance Guinea Pigs are. People always say how cute mine are and I instantly go on damage control and tell them how much they need. Be it fresh fruits and veggies, hay and such. I've spent so much on my babies health care (2 bouts of stasis) but it's worth it for them! And honestly any pet. If you are giving an animal a home, you are responsible for their well being.

    I have had Guinea pigs in the past they never had any health problems happen. Guess they & I was lucky :) I have one pet rat left , her cage mate passed . They where both 20 months old . Was my second pair . I decided that's it for getting more rats after my last one passes . Can't handle them not living much longer then 2-3 years old :( Was thinking of getting more pigs , but with them also having heath problems . Only vet that treats pocket pets is over an hour away .. Guess more thought will be needed on my next pet . Love your cage set up , all your pigs are so cute !!

    • @skinnypigs1
      @skinnypigs1  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It really is hit or miss for the guinea pigs with massive health issues, but I do find all of them need the vet at some point even if it was just for a small hay poke, so having an exotic vet you trust is a MUST :) I know a lot of people have to travel a decent distance to get to one, so just depends if that is something you are up for :)

    have you ever dealt with pressure sores on the feet? I'm currently treating my little girl with antibiotics and Epsom salt soaks for her feet. The Vet says they're getting better but I honestly feel like they look worse. If you don't have any experience with it, can you point me in the direction of someone who does? Thank you so much for your videos and I hope your baby gets better❤
