Bagoong (sauteed shrimp paste) is for the kare-kare. You need to place a bit of it to your spoonful of rice with kare-kare

Agreed! Kare-kare tastes way better with the bagoong!

Thank you for trying Filipino food. If you noticed, the server gave you a couple of dipping sauces for each dish. Bagoong goes with Kare-Kare, the calamansi, soy sauce with chili is for the sisig. Patisserie usually goes with sinigang and soy sauce with vinegar goes with crispy Pata

16:49 That should definitely be bagoong since it goes with kare kara. It is usually mixed with a little lemon or calamansi. Until you have fully acquired the taste, you can't truly appreciate dishes like kara kara. I also love it with spicy Laing with pork. a little dab of bagoong with lemon in every spoonful is heaven.

Kare kare is ox tail, and beef tripe stewed in peanut buttter, with a variety of veggies like egg plants, napa cabbage, string beans, banana heart, and it is served with baguong/ premented shrimp paste of the side. Kare kare can also be a mixed seafood.

Hi Kurt. Great video!! The Kare Kare is An Oxtail Peanut Stew. Now, Kare Kare has a strong peanut butter taste because of the peanut butter but rather bland at the same time. What enhances the flavour of Kare Kare is the Bagoong (Femented Shrimp Paste) . It’s a good way to add some “umami saltiness” to the dish depending how salty you want it to be. (It’s better than using salt or Patis (Fish Sauce) )I know for me when I eat Kare Kare with a plate of rice, I add about half a teaspoon of bagoong and mix it all together. It is just the right amount of saltiness for me.

It's nice to watch a while guy with so much food on the table talking to himself.....wow, never seen ice cream drip on a turon. On the halo2, I prefer eating the ube ice cream and the leche flan by itself, maybe because back in the60's, my school allowance can only afford a regular halo2, no ice cream or flan, that's special. Never had turon with ice cream either. I'm ok with the SM turon. For your culinary quest, i suggest you go to Pampanga. Most of what you ate came from Pampanga, just a 2hr bus ride north of Manila🙂

Manam is fusion of Filipino dishes. And fusion dishes becomes expensive because of how they present the food in an artful way. It’s more of a taste-test-size dishes. But the food are amazing. I love the bangus sisig but it used to be the mikfish fat but I’m not sure if they still have it. But I’ve tried other dishes like kare-kare, and crispy pancit palabok. It’s my go-to when I go back to the Philippines.

You should try the food at kanin club, or c2. Kanin club use to be in ayala triangle, and c2 use to be or should be on the top floor of shangri-la mall on ortigas/greenhills/mandaluyong area. But the only thing is they are a bit on the pricey side.

Ay yay yay!!! Me yelling at the screen saying “Squeeze the calamansi on the sisig ang it will be 10 out of 10!” And I was on the edge of my seat whether he is going to use a tiny bit of bagoong on the Kare Kare! Ugh! Nakaka-frustrate, haha! Sana naman the Kuya Manam staff explained properly how to eat the dishes!

      @ronskih 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

@@miguelsantos8196 Kaya nga di ba. There’s a reason we have those dipping sauces and we squeeze calamansi on certain dishes. Calamansi cuts through the fat and the bagoong balances the richness of the Kare Kare. Sana restaurant staff be trained to explain lalo na sa mga non-Pinoys.

I was laughing about what you said with the utensils. Japanese still eating in a wood sticks in a modern world! until now i tried using it seems hard for me to learn it. In America eating in a fork kind of difficult too. Scooping food with a sauce seems hard. I guess you're right spoon and fork is the perfect utinsils to scoop and if theres soup its perfect.

About the take out, it’s true haha! I hate sisig on takeout, sisig becomes too soggy. If there’s chicharon in sisig, it’s going to be bad when it arrives to your home, it’s no longer crispy and crunchy. Sisig is best when served right in front of you in the restaurant.

I like your videos. I’m sure I’m not the only one who would like to know a little more about your two years in your early days in PI. More about how you actually learned Tagalog. Were you a Missionary. I’ve seen a lot of your interviews and it was very washed over two years, province, learned Tagalog…
I feel it would make for a very informative and helpful Vlog…
    Thank you…
    🙂

LECHON PAKSIW is also my favorite. I guess you can find it at a LECHON restaurant like Rico’s or Lydia’s Lechon. The usual Filipino dishes are always there at Manam’s like the Liempo LECHON KAWALI, SINIGANG, SISIG, KARE-KARE and ADOBO. I’ve been there when I went to Manila last year. Some of their dishes are a bit salty for me. The Ube shake is really good. Over all I’m satisfied with the experience. My family loves it, too.

The oxtail KARE-KARE is a beef stew with peanut butter and thicken with ground rice and you have to eat it with BAGOONG ( shrimp paste). I like to eat the LECHON with Atsara.

Their crispy pork SISIG is very good. Sisig is always a staple in almost all Filipino restaurants anywhere even in foreign countries.

As a person who is learning another language as well (Spanish), all i can say it is mentally draining having to think hard and translate in a second language. I don't know if anyone else can relate. I'm not complaining cause it is SOO worth it when locals understand me and continue to converse with me in their language. But i understand when you mention how you have to think hard when speaking.

100%. It's very mentally draining for me to try to speak to the camera, keep things in frame, keep the conversation going, eat the food, and interact in Tagalog 😂😂😂😭
