    In this video I have a 2014 Toyota Prius with a leaking timing cover, with a very common oil leak. I will show you how to remove this timing cover with engine still in the car and how to reseal it properly without any issues. It is not an incredibly difficult job so let's get started.

    This is a 5 star video! Love the crystal clear step by step detailed instructions. Looked all over the internet for trimming cover replacement videos for my 2011 Lexus CT200h without success until I found this one. (Same engine) kudos for the great work!

    Thank you Tone for this nicely presented how-to, I especially appreciate the important tips you emphasize and pointing out the "gotchas" to avoid based on your own experience. I sure hope you get to work on an LS430 (3UZ-FE) that needs a timing belt/water pump replacement one of these days, I will be taking copious notes for that involved repair! 👍

    You and I know to force the tensioner back in very slowly, but for a tutorial video, I would have done this task much earlier as you said you are not going to replace it. Less experienced mechanics will jam the piston back in (BASED ON TYPE) and it will leak, the video should say if this thing leaks, REPLACE IT and it takes time to get parts in so this is why I do this task earlier in the game as it might leak simply because it's bad.
    QUESTION, it seems as though you have done plenty of these jobs, you showed us some Service Info, did you print everything out so you can make all the notes that you need for the next time that you do this job in the future and store the package of papers in a private library? You forgot to put sealant on the 3rd set of seams, I would think your previously made notes from your private library, OR a checklist that you custom created would prevent such mistakes. Not a complaint, only a question if you keep a library of past jobs, even though in the future, there can still be an update or improvement added in, I don't believe in relying on the human memory, I believe we should work as robots and we need a step by step process in an attempt to prevent mistakes knowing it might take a few tries to perfect the process. Thank you again for a great tutorial video with extra TIPS, timing alignment, torq info, part info.

      Funny you mention the silicone, I realized it later after was all put back together but had no leaks so was ok. I do not print the repair info usually unless it is torque specs that are complicated or sometimes I print torque pictures. I bookmark a job like this in Alldata so it is easy to go and look up the vehicle and find the info easier. I do not normally miss things when doing repairs, I am generally very thorough. Not sure if I was being pulled a million places at once when I did this. Thanks for watching.

    Thank you so much for doing this and uploading it!! It looks complicated. Even though you make it look easy. What was your real time hours in replacing this gasket?
    Should I go ahead and replace the head gasket. Even though its not leaking? As this is half way there to replacing it.
    Thank you in advance!

      You are very welcome, I am not exactly sure how much time it takes me, I think head gaskets take me about 12 hours or so but it has been a while so not exactly sure how much time. As far as replacing the head gasket that is something you have to think about. I it a bit more work, I have a video on how to do that job as well on my channel. Hit me up on Instagram if you need any help. Thanks for watching.

    I was told today by the Toyota dealership that mine is leaking. Said it would be $3,500 to fix it. And they mentioned that they have to take the engine out. Is this price accurate or overpriced? I don’t have access to a lift so I don’t think I could try to do this repair myself.

    • @NutsandBoltswithTone
      @NutsandBoltswithTone  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I am not sure about the price, I can tell you that the labor for this job is around 12 to 15 hours if I remember correctly. You do not need to take the engine out however Toyota service info says to take engine out for it. Same as head gasket and I do not remove engine to do head gaskets on these. Thanks for watching. Oh and you can do this job on the ground.

    Can the tensioner be removed, put on new gasket, then reset and put back tensioner, then rotate engine main crank bolt until you hear the tensioner release? The tensioner on a corrolla can be done independently like that. Is it the same on Prius? I know i probably have the cover leaking too, but was curious about tensioner only procedure. Thanks! Absolutely, excellent video!

    • @NutsandBoltswithTone
      @NutsandBoltswithTone  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes you tool the engine slightly backwards until the lock releases. Do this while valve cover is off so you can see the lock released. Thanks for watching
