That box art is so damn nostalgic.. I used to just stare at them when I was bored and read the instructions over and over. Pokémon Gold is my all time favourite game hands down and it’s not even close. Great video!

I get why there were so little new Pokemon in the region. The goal is to discover that there are new Pokemon and them being very rare or related to old Pokemon seems reasonable. At least for Gen 2 since its the first time it happened. That's what made it so interesting in my opinion. The game also encourages using old Pokemon since they learn newer moves, have newer evolution or can be shiny like the Red Gyarados. It wouldn't work if the Gyarados were a new gen Pokemon. It had to hit home that all Pokemon even the old ones can have different colored variation which are extremely rare.

The funny thing is, this is the easiest generation to get shiny pokemon in (aside from the roamers, good luck with that).

This marks the second time I've heard someone find a situation harder than usual because they don't use Fighting Types. I'm glad Lugia could help you out and possibly change your mind on Legendaries from the Gen 1 videos, heh heh.
Cool video and insights on the games. I agree that HMs made your Pokémon feel a little livelier, but I still never liked sacrificing a move slot to a move that couldn't be forgotten and, more often than not, wasn't very good in battle. I'd like "Pokémon affects environment for you" to come back, but have them as passive attributes every Pokémon has in different combinations, like Natures (but without weighing in on battles). Blastoise, being a bulky turtle, would have things like, "Muscles" and "Strong Swimmer" to let you know they can move boulders and surf you around water, regardless of what moves they have. Maybe a little advanced for Pokémon's typical overworld mechanics, but I'd rather try something once and have it fail than have a possibly neat idea and never try it.
I agree that it stinks Johto's Pokémon didn't get more shine in their own game, but I've heard that Gen 2 was developed as a sequel to Gen 1 rather than its own thing because Nintendo figured Pokémon was a fad that would die out; thus, a lot of Gen 1 Pokémon that didn't get much love got more time to shine, even at the expense of new arrivals. If that idea didn't factor into your playthroughs of Gen 2 before, does it change anything for you now or no?

I still think that the g/s/c and b/w b2/w2 are the pinnacle of what pokemon shouldve been. I still fire up my N64 and my pokemon stadium 2 every year to play my original copy of gold, with a swapped battery of course.

I think I agree about gen 2 and 5 being peak pokemon. I struggle with Gen 5 though, I love so much about it, but dislike so much about it’s art direction. I wish the new Pokémon art were just more in line with the Ken Sugimori style. In many cases I find the sprites just look bad even if the designs are strong. Which is strange because with all previous gens the sprite art is wonderful.
Well I’ll get off my soap box now, overall yes, gen 2&5 are peak.

Wow, we must be the same person, because gen 2 and gen 5 are my favorite generations. I was honestly surprised at how good Gen 5 was when it first came out. It gave me a sense of nostalgia instantly even though I started with gen 2.

My favorite generation of Pokemon. Something just so adventurous about these games compared to the other entries. Though, I do think Gen 5 is overall the better generation, this is the one I always come back to every year or so.

There’s one huge negative to the games I don’t see a lot of people talking about: the real time clock data and the internal battery. I don’t know who sees this as a positive, but the clock data adds tedium to the game as well as draining the console’s battery faster since the game has to maintain it and the safe file. If the battery runs dry, time based events won’t work! Meaning the only option to get rid of it is to start a new save file. God help you if your current save file has all the good Pokémon in it because you can’t send them to Gen 3 games. You can only box em in the stadium games!
